Being that his recent Time Out of Mind left a strong impression on us, making its way into a couple of year-end lists, we’re intrigued by news that Oren Moverman has found a follow-up project — one not only based on well-regarded material, but also with Richard Gere back in tow and a strong cast surrounding him. Variety tell us he’ll next write and direct The Dinner, an adaptation of Herman Koch‘s novel in which two brothers, Paul and Stan Lohman (Steve Coogan and Gere, respectively), have a meal with their wives, Claire and Barbara (Laura Linney and Rebecca Hall, respectively). The former sibling is out-of-work; the other is a beloved politician on the cusp of grabbing his state’s gubernatorial position. What unites them is a “monstrous crime [that] has been committed by the Lohman kids,” and what accelerates the unease between these couples is how the matter...

A priest jumps off a roof and impales himself on a fence. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. No? Thought not, but can you imagine the punch line?! No? It’s not very funny is it? But! If you think it would involve some massive century spanning papal conspiracy then Boom! Studios has just the comic for you!
Revelations #1 is a hard-boiled, rain soaked detective story that takes place in Vatican City. After a priest falls to his death under suspicious circumstances, a cardinal turns to his old friend Northern, a former police detective and current chain smoker, to help solve the case. What follows is a fairly straight forward detective story elevated by Ramos’ kinetic art and Jenkins’ irreverent wit.

Joaquin Phoenix is no longer alone on the cast list for Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's Inherent Vice. The Master star has been attached to the project since January, when he took over the lead role for Robert Downey Jr., but when it was announced last week that production on the movie would start this month we knew that it wouldn't be long until it started attracting more actors. The Wrap has learned that Academy Award-winner Benicio Del Toro is now in active discussions to join the cast of Inherent Vice. A detective story set in 1970, the story centers on a pothead private eye named Doc Sportello (Phoenix) who starts investigating a kidnapping case involving a lost girl. Should Del Toro sign on he will play a friend of Doc's who is "always trying to help the protagonist out of trouble." The trade notes that it's...

We're all big fans of DC's series of animated shorts that have accompanied their feature-length animated films lately, and since we're definitely not alone in digging the "DC Showcase" offerings, it's no surprise that all of the shorts will be collected on DVD and Blu-Ray later this year.
What is a surprise, however, is that the collection will come with a brand new, original short featuring Superman, Captain Marvel, and one of my favorite DC characters, Black Adam.
Warner Home Video's "DC Showcase Original Shorts Collection" hits shelves in November and features the previously released shorts focusing on The Spectre and Jonah Hex, as well as the upcoming Green Arrow short and the aforementioned "Superman/Shazam!" short. DC/WB has sent along a pair of screenshots from the "Superman/Shazam!" short that offer the first peek at Captain Marvel and Black Adam.

I’m writing this from Wheatfield, Wyoming, in the middle of nowhere, a very small, cool town, on a road trip to celebrate the constantly changing state of being alive. This weekend I’ll be celebrating other things, as I wend my way to Seattle for Crypticon. I’ve never done this show before, but my experience of horror cons is that they’re even wilder than comic cons. Looking forward to this weekend in Seattle a lot, although it’s gonna be weird to meet all these new faces after a week of solitary traveling.
And it’s ironic to be going to Seattle for a horror convention, because the last time I was in Seattle, a few months ago, it was for a comics convention, and a little something extra which derailed my writing of this blog.

True crime buffs take note: Dark Horse Comics is embarking on an ambitious project to chronicle the killing spree of Gary Leon Ridgway, aka The Green River Killer. The project, titled Green River Killer – A Detective Story, is to be authored by Jeff Jensen, whose father led the twenty-plus-year investigation for the killer responsible for forty-eight possible murders.
Dark Horse Comics elaborates on the project in today’s press release: In the summer of 1982, the bodies of five dead prostitutes were found on the marshy banks of Seattle’s Green River. One year later, the remains of six more women were discovered, prompting local law enforcement to officially declare that a serial killer was at work. Over the next several years more bodies were found, cleverly hidden and most of them long dead, and by 1988, the death toll reached forty-eight suspected victims. Yet, despite the efforts of sixty detectives, the...
