- [Heimboldt comes out of the room. Hans-Günther cowers on the stairs, Alois hides behind the piano and Karl hides in a corner. The three men come out of hiding]
- Erwin Heimboldt: Nothing.
- Hans-Günther Koch: And the window?
- Erwin Heimboldt: Nor that. Does that surprise you?
- [Hans-Günther is overcome with shock]
- Hans-Günther Koch: Yes, but...
- [He staggers down the stairs like he's going to faint]
- Hans-Günther Koch: There was...
- [He staggers over to Alois and grabs him by the shoulders. Alois grabs Hans-Günther's scarf as though the young man was going to fall over backwards]
- Hans-Günther Koch: Alois, I don't feel so good.
- Alois Wachtel: You're going to go now?
- Hans-Günther Koch: To Bruno's mother.
- [He ducks out of the scarf and runs off]
- [Susanne sneaks backwards across the hall while Hans-Günther steals down the stairs, without noticing Susanne. They sneak backwards across the hall and only when they cross each other do they spot each other. Susanne screams]
- Hans-Günther Koch: Oh! Susiekins!
- Susanne Pieper: Where did you come from?
- Hans-Günther Koch: I flew!
- Susanne Pieper: Upstairs are Alois and Mr. Rauschenbach!
- Hans-Günther Koch: I know, and looking for the stranger!
- Susanne Pieper: And you?
- Hans-Günther Koch: I'm looking for the stranger, too!
- Susanne Pieper: You're lying!
- Hans-Günther Koch: Susi! How dare you call me a liar! What did I do to deserve that? My mother, my father- well, my father, not so much- but my teachers and both my trainers in my childhood never called me a liar! And then when I met you, you were so cute that your dirndl wore top protection, simply top. And underneath that you were sharp. And now I want to marry you and have a child. Would you like me, too, Susanne? It's possible. We'll call the child Bruno.
- [Susanne starts crying and sinks to her knees, clinging to Hans-Günter's leg]
- Hans-Günther Koch: And you call his father a liar?
- Susanne Pieper: Stop! I love you!
- Hans-Günther Koch: Yes, and I'm your beloved liar.
- Hans-Günther Koch: Want to go to Bruno's room?
- [Susanne realizes that Hans-Günther just told her that the upstairs room was occupied]
- Susanne Pieper: WHO'S LIVING IN THE UPSTAIRS ROOM?
- [Hans-Günther stands up quickly, straight as an arrow, and whispers into Susanne's ear]
- Hans-Günther Koch: [whispering] Oberpichler.
- [Susanne's face falls]
- Susanne Pieper: You liar! There will never be a Bruno!
- [She turns tail and heads for the door]
- Hans-Günther Koch: Susiekins!
- Susanne Pieper: Never!
- Hans-Günther Koch: But I've...
- Susanne Pieper: No way!
- Hans-Günther Koch: Sue...
- Hans-Günther Koch: [briefly poking her head through the doorway] No way!
- Hans-Günther Koch: Then it'll be a Brünnhilde!
- Helmut Oberpichler: I'll report you to Mr. Oberpichler! Promptly!
- [He starts to sneeze]
- Helmut Oberpichler: Ah, ah...
- Karl Rauschenbach, Hans-Günther Koch: Bless you.
- Helmut Oberpichler: Do not interrupt me!
