Originally to be released in 1995. But then director Gerard Verhage was threatened by the real bodyguard of Klaas Bruinsma. Therefore the production was postponed for almost 10 years.
The movie was in production when one of Klaas Bruinsma's old bodyguards, Charlie da Silva, gave an exclusive interview in which he revealed that Mabel Wisse Smit, fiancee of prince Friso (a member of the Dutch Royal House), had been in a relationship with Bruinsma in the late 1980s. Writer/director Gerrard Verhage immediately stated that this would not be incorporated into the movie. The character played by Chantal Janzen is a composite of one of Bruinsma's other girlfriends, and his female financial manager.
The movie is based on the life of Dutch criminal Klaas Bruinsma. He was called "the founding father of Dutch drugs criminality". He was killed on the parking lot of the Hilton hotel in Amsterdam in 1991. His real killer is never prosecuted. According to several Dutch journalists Bosnian criminal Branco Marianovic killed Bruinsma out of revenge. Bruinsma shot his brother a few years before during a drugs deal.
