The story of Hori and Dhania
cseabhi5 July 2021
Any literature classic movie cannot be made without the conviction of actors and the director. Godaan is based on Munshi Premchand's last complete novel and to make it to perfection required strong conviction. In this movie we can see exactly that conviction from actors as well as directors.

It's as we are watching that era in front of us.

Godaan is story of Hori(Raaj Kumar) and his family members, who is a poor farmer and he takes a loan from Bhola to purchase a cow. Hori's life takes a turn when his jealous brother Heera poisons his cow and flees away. There's another story of Gobar(Mehmood) who is Hori's son and is in love with Bhola's daughter Jhuni(Shubha Khote) and she got pregnant by him. Gobar flees away from town fearing action against him. Jhunia finds shelter in Hori's place. Then there's all the difficulties Hori faces after cow's death, Gobar fleeing away.

Many scenes touches heart, like when the cow Hori takes from Bhola comes in to Hori's hosue and the happiness of entire family members showcase the importance of cow in that era. Cow were like a family members and taken care just like a family members.

And when the cow dies, the sorrow and grief of family members. Actually the whole movie is based on cow and hori's family.

Even many dialouges of the movie touches your heart and adds meaning to story, and even releavent today.

Dhania's(Kamini Kaushal) nature, she cannot withstand any wrong doing and is pure by heart. Her every action is just admirable. Hori's nature and his character is complex. He is a nice person but is helpless and is burdeoned with lot of things. Dhania doesn't like many decisions of Hori but she cannot do much. Hori takes most of the decision out of helplessness.

Godaan is Hori's story and the way Raaj Kumar has portrayed Hori's character, is just amazing. His body languages, dialect and every action is just in sync with the original story and the society at that time.

Godaan is the story set up when the there were many challenges before a farmer and poor section of society as they were opppressed and helpless.

Kamini Kaushal's is super effective in Dhania's role. Anger, love and helplessness all the emotions emerges so naturally on her face.

Director Trilok Jetley whose only film to date is Godaan, has done a good job portaying Munshi Premchand's classic. Music of this movie is very well made and is in sync with that era.
