One may like the main characters (as I did) or not, but they are real. And they must be adored for their openness. This cross-cultural marriage, concluded in Havana and lived in Hamburg, has frequently been filmed on digital video for about 2 years.
As a native German, I would not expect a current German movie to romanticize today's Germany, but surprisingly it is also not romantic towards Cuba, against the current Cuba-hype. One issue of the recent German past (before the unification West Germany had to 'buy' East Germans who officially went from the East to the West) somewhat repeats with the tremendous fees the Cuban State claims for marriages to foreigners. Well, this film says it all and shows it all, even closely picturing childbirth (which could be a bit delicate for taboo-oriented audiences).
In general the scenes stagger between stiff and amusing and repeatedly seem to ask: What actually keeps a marriage together? The pre-screening in Freiburg with the (female) co-director J. Eggert present, excited and puzzled the audience.
