Amateurish Buddy Cop Fichera
fatcat-7345022 April 2022
It sort of has the tone of a fichera (Mexican sex comedy), but there isn't as much as and nudity in it as usual, really.

At its heart it's a buddy cop comedy. There are two corrupt policemen who are friends and like to play pranks on each other. I didn't bother to learn their names, but maybe I should have. I think one of them was surnamed "malacara" which means "bag/ugly face" and is a play on a common Hispanic surname "Buenrostro" - "good visage." That's almost as clever as it gets, though.

As usual, lots of terrible wordplay, sexual situations, and one or two requisite musical scenes. The first features one of the girls, who sings terribly, the second one has the main Putin-looking policeman singing, which is actually a fun scene.

There are various halfplots. First they make a major drug bust and they get fired and one becomes a private detective. Then there's something about a life insurance policy where they name each other as beneficiaries, at which point they start to suspect each other of trying to murder one another. Then there's something about evil Germans trying to take over Mexico or something. None of them go anywhere and are just thrown in in a very amateurish way.

The crux of the movie is one of the worst things about it, though. The main cop is really corrupt and commits serious assaults, sexual assaults, and thefts at will. Unlike Torrente (1998), though, it's not because he's loveably stupid and incompetent. Nor is it like a Dirty Harry where he thinks it's necessary to get the job done. And it's not like Crash (2006), where he has a change of heart at the end. No, he's malicious and greedy, he knows he is, and he doesn't care. They thought it was cute. I thought it was really inappropriate given the serious problems in corruption in Mexico then and now.

It has a couple of funny lines, but it's mostly bad. The best part of the movie is that they show some Nintendo games such as Ikari Warriors.

Honourable Mentions: A Taxing Woman (1988). A movie where a kid plays Super Mario on screen. Super!
