The Matchbox line of tiny toy cars is to become a big feature film, and Extraction director Sam Hargrave has landed the plum job of making it.
We learned all the way back in 2022 that Mattel was looking to get a film project underway that would feature its long-running line of Matchbox toy cars. As part of the press release, it was trumpeted that ‘one Matchbox car is sold every second’ meaning that the brand possesses that all important ‘pre-awareness’ that is seen as crucial by the folks that give these types of films the thumbs-up.
Then 2022 happened and that other film based on a Mattel toy did rather well. You may have read a thing or two about the success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, but in the wake of that film’s huge success, Mattel announced that it had a number of projects on the horizon that would...

Country singer Walker Hayes was six years into his sobriety journey when he scored a surprise number-one hit, instantly giving him the biggest platform of his career, while also propping him up on the biggest stage to fall from.
That surprise hit was “Fancy Like,” Hayes’ humdinger of a single that touted the joys of a “Bourbon Street steak” at Applebee’s over a snappy beat and sing-along chorus.

In “Masters of the Universe,” He-Man’s nemesis is the evil wizard Skeletor. In Hollywood, his greatest threat has been a list of studio partners that have sidelined him from the big screen for nearly two decades.
The blond barbarian, based on a popular set of Mattel toys, may finally win the day. Amazon MGM Studios is in serious talks to mount a live-action “Masters of the Universe” movie from Adam and Aaron Nee, the writing and directing team behind “The Lost City,” according to multiple insiders. Conversations are taking place with Amazon after Netflix dropped a planned version of the Nee brothers film in July.
Netflix spent nearly $30 million in development costs over two years for the project, which was meant to star Kyle Allen (“A Haunting in Venice”). The streamer walked away when the tentpole’s budget, originally set for more than $200 million, could not be meaningfully reduced.

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" became a bona fide hit this year. After it premiered this July, the film grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, which, according to Box Office Mojo, makes it the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, beating films like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," "Oppenheimer," and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." Since it's pulled in passionate audiences worldwide, it's no wonder Mattel is eager to make even more movies inspired by its popular toy brands. Its upcoming film slate is being dubbed the "Mattel Universe." While the success of "Barbie" has certainly helped push the company to begin development on these films, the Mattel Universe has actually been years in the making. Let us explain.
How Did the Mattel Cinematic Universe Begin?
According to The New York Times, talks of a Mattel Universe first began when CEO Ynon Kreiz took over as Mattel's new chairman and chief...

“Barbie” already generating more than $1 billion at the global box office may not even be its biggest contribution to movie theaters.
A new survey from The Quorum found that 11 percent of those who saw “Barbie” had not been to a movie theater since before the Covid-19 pandemic. Another 11 percent could not recall the last time they had been to a movie theater.
Assuming the latter group is not made up of goldfish (“Ted Lasso” famously reminded us of their ultra-short attention span), that means 22 percent, or a bit less than one quarter, of “Barbie” ticket-buyers hadn’t stared up at the silver screen since that initial lockdown period upended all our lives and nearly ruined the theatrical-distribution business.
The Quorum’s study surveyed 1,800 Americans who went to the theater to see “Barbie” over its first three weeks of availability. The researchers asked: “How often do you see a theater in a movie?...

I love you, you love me, let’s make a fringe Mattel movie…As the feature-length adaptation of the iconic toy Barbie awaits its big screen release, in the shadows waits Barney, with the upcoming movie now being described as a “surrealistic”, “A24-type” movie. And we have just bumped it to the top of our most anticipated movie list, now that we know Baby Bop gets decapitated after suffering from a walnut allergy.
The slated Barney movie, which is produced by Daniel Kaluuya, is looking to hit a key demographic — that is, those that know the purple dinosaur from their youth. According to Mattel Films vice president Kevin McKeon, speaking with The New Yorker, “We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids…It’s really a play for adults. Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of...

It’s a Barbie world, and we’re all just living in it.
What seems like a Mattel doll lifetime ago, Margot Robbie confirmed the “Barbie” live-action film adaptation in July 2019, with Greta Gerwig and partner Noah Baumbach co-writing the script. Gerwig was later announced to be directing the film.
The news marked the famed blonde-haired doll’s 60th anniversary. “Barbie” will premiere in theaters on July 21, 2023.
Robbie, who will star as Barbie opposite Ryan Gosling’s Ken, is slated to produce the film through her production company LuckyChap Entertainment. Mattel Films and HeyDay Films will co-produce.
The “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” star admitted that the film “comes with a lot of baggage and a lot of nostalgic connections” to honor the doll’s legacy. “But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it,” Robbie said to British Vogue. “People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think,...

“Better Call Saul” had all the means to relitigate “Breaking Bad.” There was a courtroom and witnesses and the eager attention of every viewer keen on seeing where Saul Goodman’s (Bob Odenkirk) fate would end up in relation to his former clients’. But as it did, time and again over the course of its six-season run, the “Better Call Saul” finale opted for a road of its own choosing.
At the same time, “Better Call Saul” was never going to be able to ignore its fellow Albuquerque show completely. Doing so would fall somewhere between foolishness and hubris. The idea that Jimmy McGill’s own turn for the worse could come fully independently of another six-season arc in recent memory, involving some of the same key players, just wasn’t feasible.

“Face the music. You walk in with your head held high, you’ll be the John Dillinger of the Metropolitan Detention Center. How bad is that?”
That was the parting advice that Saul Goodman gave Walter White in Breaking Bad’s “Granite State,” and nearly nine years later, the con artist formerly known as Jimmy McGill has taken his own counsel in Better Call Saul’s series finale, “Saul Gone.” Saul Co-creator Peter Gould wrote and directed both of the aforementioned episodes, and quite fittingly, he made sure that Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) took a roundabout way towards accepting responsibility and permanently shedding the Saul Goodman persona.

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which emanates from Grand Rapids, Michigan – which means this was taped at the same time as this past weekend’s Battle of the Belts special. We’ve got Taz and Excalibur on commentary as usual so let’s get to the action!

It seems both teams are floundering somewhat after the end of the Hfo/Ahfo so to see them in action is good, even more so when the in-ring action is good too!

The sixth and final season of AMC's "Better Call Saul" has brought back two familiar but long-absent faces: Craig and Betsy Kettleman, played by Jeremy Shamos and Julie Ann Emery, respectively. The Kettlemans first appeared in "Uno," the very first episode of "Better Call Saul," back in 2015. They were a fixture of the show's first season, as Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) found themselves tangled up in their legal troubles. Craig was facing embezzlement charges as country treasurer, and among other things, season 1 would see the Kettlemans hiding out in a tent in the woods on their property and Jimmy enlisting Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks)...

This article contains spoilers for Better Call Saul season 6 episode 2.
The producers of Better Call Saul have already made it clear that the sixth and final season of the Breaking Bad spinoff will feature two of the biggest cameos possible in the form of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).
While we don’t know when Walt and Jesse will stop by Saul Goodman’s Albuquerque (or perhaps Gene Takovic’s Omaha), the first two episodes of the season reveal that there’s still room for other non-Walt or Jesse-sized guest appearances. In fact, the second episode of this final season, “Carrot and Stick”, reaches all the way back to Better Call Saul season 1 to reintroduce some (sort of) familiar old faces.

As Saul (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) work out the details of their plot to frame Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) for “something unforgivable” they...

The Writer Of The Uno Movie Has Signed Up To Write More Movies About Things That Shouldn't Be Movies
Remember last year when it was announced that an "Uno" movie set in the underground Atlanta hip-hop scene was in the works, with rapper Lil Yachty attached? Kelly, who also adapted the infinitely quotable teen movie "Mean Girls" into a highly popular narrative video game for Pocket Gems and Paramount, has already written the "Uno" movie, based on the bestselling...

This Attack on Titan review contains spoilers.
Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 21
“You’re not a slave, nor are you a God. You’re just a human! You don’t have to obey anyone! You can decide. You get to decide!”
Back when Attack on Titan first started there was a cryptic nature to the significance behind the first episode’s title, “For You, 2000 Years From Now,” both in terms of what it’s referring to and who is behind this message. Attack on Titan is a pro at keeping its cards close to its chest, but it’s extremely impressive that the answer to this question that’s posed in the anime’s pilot finally gets answered in “From You, 2000 Years Ago,” which echoes closure across centuries of turmoil.
It’s deeply satisfying as this narrative loop completes and how this haunting piece of symmetry truly emphasizes how Eren...

Welcome to this weeks reviwe of Aew Dark: Elevation. It’s another short show this week, which is good considering how busy Christmas week is – plus it helps out with general wresting fatigue given how much there is to watch each and every week! Anyway, let’s get into the review.
Match #1: Nyla Rose, Emi Sakura and The Bunny def. Jessica James, Gigi Rey and Lady Bird Monroe

Mattel is developing the live-action family drama Christmas Balloon, which will be written by Gabriela Revilla Lugo (A Million Little Things) based off a true story.
The film follows a young girl, Dáyami, living in a Mexican border town who tries to send her Christmas list to Santa tied to a balloon. The balloon is found by Randy and Marcella Heiss, a couple in Arizona grieving the loss of their own child, who make it their mission to fulfill the girl’s touching Christmas wishes. Mattel worked with the couple and donated toys to fulfill Dáyami’s wish towards a brighter future.
“Much like Dáyami’s balloon itself, the journey of this touching story and Mattel’s direct role in fulfilling her real-life wishes made it a must-do for us,” said Kevin McKeon, VP of Mattel Films. “We were immediately struck by this little girl’s spirit and the story’s positive message.

The popular video game “Frogger” is being turned into a competition series at NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock.
“Frogger” will feature 12 outrageous obstacle courses, or “crossings.” These physically demanding challenges will see contestants dodge treacherous traffic, leap over snapping gators and hop over hungry hippos to conquer the course. Contestants from across the country will test their talents in a race requiring skill, strength, strategy and problem-solving smarts. (Those wanting to compete on the show can apply here.)
The series, which was ordered for 13 episodes, is based on Konami’s popular “Frogger” franchise, which debuted in 1981 as an arcade game. It was subsequently turned into a video game on home consoles like Sega and PlayStation and now has more than 30 titles.

This isn’t the first time that Uno was given an attempt to make it on TV, but obviously, the chance in 2013 didn’t pan out quite so well since this current moment is one that’s bound to have a lot more meaning since the game’s 50th anniversary is coming up next year, which makes this kind of perfect even though it doesn’t have a network just yet. By now it feels safe to say that a lot of people know what Uno is all about since the game has been featured in 80 countries or so and is one of

A reality game show based on the popular card game Uno is in the works, Variety has learned.
The potential series hails from the television division of game maker Mattel along with Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens and Greg Lipstone of Propagate and John Quinn. Silverman, Owens, Lipstone, and Quinn will all serve as executive producers. No network is currently attached.
“Uno is the most popular game in the world and is a fixture in pop culture, making it the ideal franchise to build a reality game show around,” said Adam Bonnett, executive producer at Mattel Television, who is leading the development project for the company. “Ben, Howard, Greg and John have deep expertise in unscripted content and are the perfect partners to help us transform Uno into a television series for the whole family.”
“The Uno Game Show,” will feature four teams who will face off to become the ultimate Uno champion.

In the 175 days since Louisville police killed Breonna Taylor, she has become a fulcrum for a movement. Her unjust death, alongside too many others, galvanized a wounded nation into leaving their homes, taking up protest signs, demanding justice and the kind of accountability from law enforcement that rarely comes. By design of those drawing attention to her case, her face has become ubiquitous at rallies, on magazine covers, on Instagram grids. She’s become, for better and for worse, a symbol of what happens when unchecked policing and racism collide. This deification can serve a purpose, but it also strips a person of their inherent humanity. Before Breonna Taylor was a hashtag, she was a human being.

Have you heard the one where the pregnant doctor with anxiety and the young attending with Ptsd are stuck in a hyperbaric chamber with a therapist?
If not, you have now after Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 5.
Was there a punchline somewhere? Hard to say, but it was glum dark humor. You have to admit it.
They whittled it down to a handful of characters during the hour and gave us a break from the Pac-North saga. We were down to Jo and Bailey working on a case together and spending most of their time in that hyperbaric chamber, which they've put to great use.
We also had our beloved Zola in peril, but it seemed more like a storyline orchestrated for Meredith to fall through on her court engagements again.

Metropolis: Lux Obscura is a peculiar mix of gritty noir motion-comic and match-3 elements. Although this seems a somewhat strange combination and the game definitely has its flaws, I found myself strangely addicted to it.
The game opens with the protagonist character, Lockhart, being released from prison and returning by bus to New York, where he instantly gets back into his old criminal ways, which entail introducing his fists to other people’s faces at great speed. The game is split cleanly in two halves. As we follow Lockhart on his journey, we are treated to top-quality comic style graphics that wouldn’t look out of place in a DC graphic novel, they are easily one of the strongest points of the game. I wish the same could be said for the voice acting and writing, but no, it can’t. The sound design overall is ok, the music can...

Aksel Hennie is going Hollywood. We've been vocal fans of the Norwegian star here at Twitch since first coming across him in a pair of 2004 films - Uno and Hawaii, Oslo - and have tracked his career with great interest ever since. As anybody who is a regular reader of this site can tell you there are a handful of actors around the world whose careers I follow with particular intensity. It's not just because they're talented, though they certainly are. It's because they also have a nose for talent and a remarkable ability to attach themselves to strong scripts and strong directors as well. Ananda Everingham is one of these guys. Tadanobu Asano was for years, though he's slowed now. Nikolaj Lie Kaas is another. And in Norway, there's Aksel Hennie.
Hennie first came to my attention as the writer-director-star of gritty drama Uno, after which I found him in Hawaii, Oslo and was pretty much hooked. Hennie's a picky one, very selective with his projects, and I would imagine that would be even more the case than normal after the massive international success of Max Manus, in which he played the lead.
