COLOGNE, Germany -- Germany's oldest film subsidy body has been saved from extinction after pressure from the local industry forced German politicos to reverse an earlier decision to shut down the Kuratorium Junger Deutscher Film (Curatorship for Young German Film). The premieres of the 16 German states announced Friday that they would not scrap the Kuratorium, which has backed early films from such German cinematic luminaries as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog and Tom Tykwer. More recently, the Kuratorium helped bankroll low-budget crossover successes like Schultze Gets The Blues and this year's winner at Locarno, 3 Degrees Colder.

COLOGNE, Germany -- Hans Weingartner's politically charged drama The Edukators was named best film by the German association of film critics Wednesday, with the film's star Julia Jentsch picking up the best actress nod. August Diehl won the best actor prize for his turn in Achim von Borries' period romantic drama Love in Thoughts, and Michael Schorr's tragicomedy Schultze Gets the Blues picked up the award for best film debut.
