Another great Samuel Fuller film on Blu-ray — this one is a crime tale set in downtown Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo, that forms an interracial romantic triangle. It’s risky for its year because of the sexual dynamics — a Japanese-American man falls in love with a Caucasian woman. Fuller’s approach is years ahead of its time, even if Columbia’s sales job was a little weird.

I spent some time in Waco as a kid and it was always a friendly place to live, but not particularly bustling when I lived there (at least not when you come from London.) So when I had a chance to tour the Magnolia Market at the Silos and see what all of the excitement was about, I could not believe the hustle and bustle of the crowds shopping, kids running around playing, the lines at the Silos Baking Co. and the general excitement of people of all ages who were making the pilgrimage to Hgtv stars Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Market and Gardens.

James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

It’s been nearly two years since I graduated college, and while I actually enjoyed the ceremony, sitting next to my best friends as we laughed and smiled one last time on our school’s campus together, I definitely was not a fan of my college’s commencement speaker. He was bland, self-indulgent, and went on forever. He said absolutely nothing interesting or beneficial to us as students. I literally wish I could have had anyone else speak at my graduation. The bar across Broadway between 113th and 114th Streets, the West End, was supposedly famous. Or at least the orientation materials had seemed to consider it an important part of Columbia history because it had been a hangout for literary figures, some of them Columbia men, though he had not yet read anything by any of them. Of more interest to Walter, there was jazz there. In passing by one Saturday afternoon on the way to Citibank, he'd seen a sign boasting that the Louis Armstrong All Stars were playing.

In February, Hayes received an honorary doctorate degree from his Alma Mater.
As for Robinson, Isu says he "discovered his natural gift for comedy while cracking one-liners and imitating Richard Nixon' for his pals on campus."

The free wine, Stella Artois beer, and snacks were appreciated by the crowd who at one point were sent downstairs while the tornado alarms went off. Fortunately, the Vincent Price Exhibit was downstairs as well, and when the beer made it down there, it just became more of a party. I’m pretty sure Vincent Price was behind the wicked weather. For take three of Take Three we have a woman who, it's feasible to say, may well have been instrumental in the invention of the term Character Actor. Thelma Ritter's career was full of supporting roles par excellence. A noteworthy six Oscar nominations (tied with Deborah Kerr), but, alas, no wins. But who needs a win with a body of work this strong: A Letter to Three Wives, All About Eve, The Mating Season, With a Song in My Heart, Birdman of Alcatraz - and the three selected below (and countless more besides).
Ah, how I adore Thelma Ritter. And how good it is to know that many others do too. If I meet or talk to someone who loves...

The majority of people know all the "big-time" film critics these days, thanks to the Internet. Former film critic, now writer/director Rod Lurie, was fairly well-known in the 90s in his own right. For being controversial, amongst other colorful adjectives used to describe him. A description some still slap him with today. After years of being an over-the-top film critic, Lurie decide to follow his true passion and become a filmmaker. Many people in the industry were just hoping a studio would actually let this guy make a film so they can tear it apart. And they did. However, their plan of derailing Lurie didn't go as expected. For he continues to produce, write, and direct films that attract many big-named stars in Hollywood.
At the University of Tampa, Rod Lurie addressed aspiring film students on numerous aspects about the industry they all yearn to be in. Professor Tom Garrett,...

A few weeks ago, a band called Casting Crowns stormed the Billboard album chart and outsold debuts by the likes of 50 Cent, Kris Allen, Them Crooked Vultures and Janet Jackson. It was another testament to the power of Christian rock, which is constantly spreading throughout the world and finding new mainstream audiences. They may be disappointed to find out that their influence perhaps doesn't extend to the Vatican — especially considering the likes of Tupac and Muse may be in heavy rotation there.
On Thursday (December 3), the Vatican released a playlist via MySpace Music that includes inspirational music and a selection from Mozart's "Don Giovanni," but it also features Tupac's 1998 hit "Changes," the latest single by Muse and a tune by Seattle folk-poppers Fleet Foxes. Curated by Father Giulio Neroni (who also produced an album called Alma Mater, which featured Pope Benedict XVI reading over liturgical music and also figures...

There was no sign of back-to-school blues at Checotah High School Friday morning when Carrie Underwood surprised her Alma mater. Underwood, 26, the Academy of Country Music's Entertainer of the Year, presented 31 instruments - ranging from an oboe to an electric guitar and worth nearly $120,000 - to fifth through twelfth grade music students in Checotah, Okla., schools. "If everybody did stuff like this, not even on a grand scale, for whatever community they're a part of, the world would be awesome," Underwood told People after the event. "Especially if you give to schools, because funding is getting cut left and right,...

Screened at South by Southwest
As Conversations With Other Women begins, the screen is split in half. One side watches Aaron Eckhart, seemingly in Lothario mode, as he stalks a wedding party guest he intends to approach; the other watches his prey, Helena Bonham Carter.
Nice way to jump into the action, you think: The camera establishes our identification with Eckhart from within (the POV shots) and without; when the image goes full-screen, we'll know who the protagonist is in this pas de deux.
A few minutes later, though, you're still waiting -- and an overtly clever device starts to become a serious distraction from the tale it's trying to tell. Director Hans Canosa continues the split screen throughout the film, often keeping us from identifying with the drama as we otherwise would. Although the technique occasionally serves some interesting purpose, it is almost certain to be a stumbling block with audiences, limiting the commercial appeal of an already intimate film.
The two protagonists are never named, and the script (by Gabrielle Zevin, who worked with Canosa on the festival-circuit film Alma Mater) is coy about their histories. We quickly learn that this is no straightforward pickup: The two have met before, years ago, under similar circumstances. As they flirt, one side of the screen will sometimes flit back to that earlier meeting, where two younger actors play the pair. We see enough to know that they met more than once, maybe that they were lovers. Why is their conversation not acknowledging this?
One obvious reason is to make things more interesting for us. Viewers who don't find the conceit too contrived will be drawn into the reasonably witty banter, forgetting about the split-angle distraction until Canosa does something particularly distracting: settling the cameras into two nearly parallel views, say, or sending an extra to pass between us and the actors, jostling our sense of the angles involved. He does this fairly often.
At other times the filmmakers do more profitable things with the dual frames. They show us what a character is thinking, in romantic flashback or quick slices of foreshadowing; late in the game, as the pair begin to make decisions with consequences, they use the extra screen to show alternate line readings, roads considered and not taken. Those glimpses become freighted with melancholy as the tale becomes a reflection on the passing of time and the vicissitudes of love. Both performances are strong, though the film continues to favor Eckhart, who may be harboring deep emotions beneath his glib charm.
Eckhart grows alternately peevish and desperate as things don't go his way. Bonham Carter, on the other hand, seems to allow herself to be led around, more preoccupied with a sudden sense of her age than with her old flame. The characters are not completely convincing as scripted, but the actors skate past this with enough charisma that we don't pause to ask questions. (Why is Bonham Carter at the wedding, for example? The explanation offered in the opening scenes becomes less satisfactory the more we learn.)
That the movie holds viewers' attention despite its contrivances is a testament to the script and acting. Whether audiences will respect the film the morning after the seduction is an open question.
