Filmed at the Troubadour nightclub, this is Steve Martin's first television special, a stand-up act he recorded for HBO back in 1976. Trying to describe his act is not easy, as so much of it seemed very random...like a stream of consciousness run amok. He jokes about drugs (VERY common to do in the 1970s), played his banjo (not nearly enough for me), played with various props and mostly just acted like a stupid goofus. In the mid-1970s, he was THE hot act...though today it's hard to imagine why. Fortunately, he didn't stay doing this sort of routine but branched out to some wonderful movies...a smart decision in hindsight. This is because a little of this sort of Steve Martin goes a very long way and folks just laughed and laughed for no particular reason. It sounds like I didn't enjoy this TV special...and that would be correct. I laughed a few times but often just found the act a bit tiresome. I guess you either had to be there in person OR had to be on drugs...something that was glamorized and seen as cool back in the day.
