The Petrified Forrest was originally a play on Broadway starring Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart. The play was written by Robert E. Sherwood. Key Largo was also a play on Broadway in 1939. It starred Paul Muni, Jose Ferrer, and Karl Mauldin. It was written by Maxwell Anderson. The plot of the play is considerably different than the movie version. Director John Huston did not like the play version and made considerable changes for the movie. He also did not like the playwright.
