Australia's first triumph at the World Cup. In the previous 3 editions, they ended as runners-up to West Indies in 1975 and failed to make it past the group stages in 1979 and 1983, including a shock defeat to Zimbabwe. In the next 8 settings, they would go on to win 4 times in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015, end as runners-up in 1996, reach the semi-finals in 2019 and quarter-finals in 2011 and exit from the group stages in 1992.
First time the World Cup was hosted by the subcontinent. The region would host it again in 1996, 2011 and 2023.
First time the World Cup was played outside England, although it would host it again in 1999 and 2019.
First time across all 4 editions till then that West Indies failed to make it to the knockout stages. It had won the inaugural edition in 1975 followed by winning in 1979 and ending as runners up in 1983. Much of the blame was placed on pace sphere-head Courtney Walsh's sportsmanship in the group match against Pakistan when he refused to run-out number 11 Salim Jaffer on the non-strikers end when the batsman had left the crease before Walsh delivered. Rather than removing the bails as allowed, Walsh instead stopped and via eye contact warned Jaffer to return to the crease. On the following delivery, Abdul Qadir hit the winning runs and West Indies was left with 3 wins out of 6.
England's Graham Gooch was the highest run scorer of the tournament with 471 runs while Australian Craig McDermott was the top wicket taker with 18 scalps.
