The New Year may only just be upon us but the world of professional wrestling is already talking about the biggest event of the year – WrestleMania, this year being the 29th edition of the extravaganza and taking place on April 7th, 2013 from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. With no matches set in stone and Royal Rumble season upon us where traditionally the main story lines begin to take shape, What Culture takes a look at 10 matches we’d love to see on the big day.
10. Beth Phoenix vs Karma
Ok, so neither woman is currently employed by WWE at the moment but who’s to say they wont be by WrestleMania or even Royal Rumble for that matter? The two best women’s wrestlers of the last decade would make for one hell of a match so why not have it on the biggest stage of them all?...

Like a bizarre mash-up of 'True Blood,' 'The Walking Dead' and 'Reno 911!,' MTV's latest foray into scripted television is a horror comedy that defies expectations.
'Death Valley' (Mon., 10:30Pm Et on MTV) is perhaps best characterized as a frenetic 'Shaun of the Dead.'
Like 'Shaun,' it treats its horror subject matter like the genuine threats they are, for the most part, but still manages to find humor throughout, even when it's broad humor like a rookie cop beating a zombie to death with a plant while trying to get the attention of her superior officers who are in the next room over.

This spring, we came across a groovy new dark-rock combo who call themselves Death Valley High, and their latest CD Doom, In Full Bloom was one of the year's spookiest new musical surprises, smashing apart the barriers of horror-punk, modern metal and hooky pop-rock. (Check out our review here.) Now the band has released a grim, violent new video for their latest single "Multiply" and you can catch that clip on the flip. Check it out! One of the album's strongest, most ominous tracks, "Multiply" has a gritty, blackened edge that really sells the album's apocalyptic theme – which frontman Reyka Osburn describes as "a school that's overturned by all the dark, freak kids." The new...

Thanks to unforgettable performances, a baby announcement and a lady superstar in full drag, among other major highlights, the 2011 MTV VMAs grabbed the biggest audience in the network's history.
In addition to bringing in a record-breaking 12.4 million total viewers, Sunday night's VMAs now rank as the #1 cable telecast of the year among viewers ages 12 to 34, and the #1 non-sports cable telecast of 2011 with total viewers.
"Anything can happen during the VMAs," Video of the Year winner Katy Perry told MTV news. "It's definitely just the funnest awards show of the whole gamut, of all the award shows. The VMAs are like a f---ing monkey out of hell award show," she laughed. "You just want to watch a spectacle, you want to watch what goes down and I think so many different sparks fly creatively.

I've got to hand it to MTV: they are no longer solely relying on the skanky "real" antics of talentless wastes-of-space to get the eyeballs. I have given up hope that the network will ever make use of that M again, but with this summer's Teen Wolf and the revival of Beavis & Butt-Head, MTV is once again watchable. Death Valley is part of this exciting new lineup. Shot in documentary Cops-style, Death Valley follows the agents of Undead Task Force (Utf). This elite department of the Lapd focuses exclusively on apprehending zombies, vampires, werewolves, and other monsters that have taken over the San Fernando Valley. Anyone who is familiar with Los Angeles will laugh that monsters chose to make the Valley...

Director: Nick Brandestini Sometimes I wonder if my quirky tendency to not read press releases or reviews (or watch trailers) prior to watching films is a bad idea. Sure, the shock and awe of being totally surprised by a film's content can be a very good thing; but in the case of Nick Brandestini's documentary, I admit I was just a little confused once the film started playing. Contrary to my initial assumption, Darwin has absolutely nothing to do with the infamous English naturalist Charles Darwin (On the Origin of Species); Brandestini's documentary actually refers to the town of Darwin, California (which is named after Darwin French). Located in the desolate nether-regions on the east side of the Sierra Nevada (not too far from Death Valley), the ex-mining community of Darwin boasts a population of 43. Brandestini wrangles 30 or so of Darwin's residents to tell their tales to his...

Title: Darwin: No Services Ahead Director: Nick Brandestini What would possess a person to stay and live in (or move to) a small, dusty town in the scorching Death Valley region of California, with a population of 35? That question is at the heart of Nick Brandestini’s “Darwin: No Services Ahead,” about a same-named, dried-up burgh at the end of a weathered road on the outskirts on a nearby mountain range where the government tests top-secret weapons. A unique and in some respects staggering work, “Darwin” is an involving portrait of people propelled from society by various tragic turns, and yet also curiously bound together by their estrangement. When, in the...

Well-received at Sundance, SXSW and BAMcinemaFEST, Asif Kapadia's Senna finally begins its theatrical run. Guy Lodge at In Contention: "With a new breed of documentarists getting ever more playfully shape-shifting in they ways they trade information and manipulate point of view — last year's talking-point docs Catfish and Exit Through the Gift Shop both hinged on an abrupt turn not only in perspective, but in subject — Asif Kapadia's dazzling biopic Senna instead subverts expectations by keeping its storytelling fiercely linear. Viewers unfamiliar with the story of Ayrton Senna, the reckless, beautiful Brazilian Formula 1 racing driver who rose to prominence in the 1980s and ended his career as arguably the greatest in the sport's history, are offered no pat framing devices and wistful talking heads to say what became of him, beyond the unhappy use of the past tense. There are, presumably, more such viewers in the Us than in the UK,...

"The Hard Times of Rj Berger" is over after just two seasons. MTV decides not to renew the comedy series for a third season despite its record ratings for the second-season premiere (3.1 million of total viewers), because its viewers has dropped to less than 1 million per episode.
MTV has previously canceled racy drama "Skins" and renewed "Teen Wolf" for a second season. The network also has a bunch of other new scripted series in the line-up, including "Death Valley" which will debut later this month, as well as "I Just Want My Pants Back" and "Inbetweeners" which are set for 2012 premiere.
Another network TNT, meanwhile, maintains its long-running show "Leverage". The cable channel renews the action thriller series for a fifth season that will premiere next summer with a 15-episode order. The currently airing fourth season has averaged 4.8 million viewers so far.

It was the first of MTV's new generation of scripted series. Now The Hard Times of Rj Berger has been canceled after two seasons, series co-creator Seth Grahame-Smith tweeted earlier today. The series, which Grahame-Smith co-created with David Katzenberg, launched with 2.8 million viewers last year when it aired after the MTV Movie Awards. Its second-season premiere hit a series high of 3.1 million viewers airing behind Jersey Shore. But by the end of the second-season run in May, the series' viewership had dropped below 1 million. Rj Berger, which stars Paul Iacono as a well-endowed high-school student, is the second MTV scripted series to be canceled following the axing of Skins after one season. Teen Wolf has been renewed for a second season, and new comedy Awkward appears a lock for a second-season renewal after hitting a series high in persons 12-34 this week. Coming up is the premiere of Death Valley on Aug.

For many, mention the name Darwin and images of evolution are conjured. While Charles Darwin Herbert Spencer is the origin of the term “survival of the fittest,” which carries a coincidental resonance, he has nothing to do with director Nick Brandestini’s film Darwin, a film about a small, isolated town that sits at the end of a worn out road in the middle of Death Valley.
Population 35, no children, no true government of any form, Darwin is the decaying remnants of a town more than 150 years old. Once inhabited by miners, prostitutes and outlaws at varying staged of its turbulent past, Darwin now is the unlikely home for a handful of intriguing characters, all of them real, each of them with their own story. Together, the lives captured on film create one of the most compelling documentaries I’ve seen in years.

You know what the Syfy Channel needs? Another mini-series about supernatural do-gooders. There's just not enough of them. Well, take heart, true believers. Another is on its way!
According to Bleeding Cool, Syfy is planning on making a TV mini-series based on the Oni Press comic book Ghost Projekt. Created by Joe Harris and Steve Rolston, the supernatural spy comic tells the story of a weapons inspector being called to an abandoned Russian faculty to find a stolen weapon that’s very different indeed.
Excited? Sort of? Yeah, we hear ya. Even weirder? MTV of all networks looks to be turning out better and meaner genre related projects than Syfy. With "Death Valley" coming up and even "Teen Wolf" taking a really dark turn, it seems as if the only network "imagining greater" on television is the one that used to play nothing but music videos.
More soon.

Award Winning Docu Darwin . A Documentary By Nick Brandestini Opens August 12 In New York At The IFC Center And August 19 In Los Angeles At The Laemmle.S Sunset 5 Cinemas
The award winning insightful and moving documentary, Darwin . A Film By Nick Brandestini, takes the viewer on a journey into an isolated community at the end of a weathered road in Death Valley, California. Propelled from society by tragic turns, the people of Darwin (population 35) must now find ways to coexist in a place without a government, a church, jobs, or children. The near-ghost town’s survival depends on a fragile, gravity-fed waterline that descends from the mountains where top-secret weapons are being tested. One “accidental” drop of a bomb could wipe out their entire town joke many of the locals.

Even if you were at Comic-Con this weekend, it would have been impossible to check out all the panels, all the screenings, and all the insanity. Check out some of our favorite bits to come out of the Con. Francis Ford Coppola showed off some footage from his upcoming supernatural drama Twixt - with a twist. Some of the most popular panels this year were for our favorite TV shows: True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Falling Skies, The Walking Dead, Supernatural, Fringe and Being Human - just to name a few. We also nabbed exclusive bites from the crazy folks behind MTV's upcoming Death Valley - sure to be a favorite when it hits the boo-tube this fall. Shocking as it may sound, comics were...

I’m currently sat watching Take Me Home Tonight, the Topher Grace starrer set in the 80s and I got to thinking about how much fun I had back then, and then I got to thinking about all the cool movies that were released during my the decade and just how many of them have never seen the light of day since then… So here it is, my Top 10 movies of the 80s that have never made it to DVD (well at least not here in the UK):
1) The Legend of Billie Jean (1985)
Average Texas teen, Billie Jean Davy, is caught up in an odd fight for justice. She is usually followed and harrased around by local boys, who, one day, decide to trash her brother’s scooter for fun. The boys’ father refuses to pay them back the price of the scooter. The fight for “fair is fair...

Looking for another place to find co-creator Damon Lindelof at Comic-Con? Check out MTV’s Death Valley panel on Friday. EW has learned that the Lost co-creator has signed on to moderate the festivities for the half-hour comedic horror series about an Undead Task Force that battles vampires, zombies, and werewolves. (Wes Craven was initially slated to host, but had to drop out.) “I have long fantasized about what would happen if the cast of Jersey Shore were to be attacked by zombies,” Lindelof tells EW. “However, once those zombies inevitably realized their hunger for brains would not be satisfied,...

Death Valley Could MTV be the savior of mainstream horror? Let's take a look.... Mainstream horror hasn't been putting out much of anything that has been exciting lately. In fact, the output has been so tepid, that mainstream horror could be heading for another 1989-1996 recession. What's surprising though, is a network like MTV has been putting out really interesting horror content lately - Teen Wolf, My Super Psycho 16, The Truth Below, and now.... Death Valley. Death Valley, which will debut this August, has a little bit of everything to please genre fans - zombies, werewolves, and vampires along with bloodshed and funny one liners. Mainstream horror should take notes from MTV, because they have seemed to find a way to incorporate elements of the horror genre that old school horror fans grew up loving, but packaging it so that there is that sense of awe and wonder for another...

Supernatural and sci-fi series are going to storm out to San Diego Comic Con 2011 on Friday, July 22. AMC's sophomore "The Walking Dead" will have a panel at 11:15 A.M with stars Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal and Sarah Wayne Callies among the panelists, while HBO will present "True Blood" panel at 5:30 P.M. in which Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Sam Trammell are scheduled to attend.
For sci-fi geeks, a panel for SyFy's "Eureka", "Warehouse 13" and "Alphas", as well as TNT's "Falling Skies" should not be missed. "Lost", which has taken a final bow last year, will still be discussed at the convention through a panel presented by Entertainment Weekly. Special guests are promised to show up at the event.
Giving more alternatives, "The Big Bang Theory" (CBS), "Spartacus: Vengeance" (Starz), "NCIS: Los Angeles" (NBC) and "Bones" (Fox) are among the line-up for Friday's TV events. Additionally, Fox...

MTV’s Comic-Con lineup will include Jackass star Johnny Knoxville sitting down with Beavis and Butthead creator Mike Judge for a one-on-one Q&A.
The Butthead-meets-Jackass panel will be a highlight of the network’s panels in San Diego this month, along with a panel for its breakout supernatural drama Teen Wolf that includes a Q&A with the cast and producers.
MTV also plans a plane with famed horror director Wes Craven talking to the cast and series producers of the new horror-comedy Death Valley. All told, MTV plans to have panels for four scripted series this year.

MTV was sad to announce the cancellation of the highly anticipated and controversial teen soap "Skins" on Thursday (June 9). The decision came after the American version of the hugely popular U.K. show just didn't bring in enough viewers to green-light a second season.
" 'Skins' is a global television phenomenon that, unfortunately, didn't connect with a U.S. audience as much as we had hoped," the network said in a statement to MTV News. "We admire the work that the series' creator Bryan Elsley did in adapting the show for MTV, and appreciate the core audience that embraced it."

Carving out their own gothic punk/metal hybrid dubbed "Doom Pop," Cali quartet Death Valley High first kicked those genre barriers down with the release of their 2007 debut album The Similarities of the Loveless and the Undead. Their style injects a touch of horror into a hook-heavy (and even danceable) pop punk/metal formula, which only sets a band apart from the herd if they know what the hell they're doing. Fortunately, these cats get it, and they've figured out a way to wind it up and let it rip. Hit the jump for a mini-review of their latest creation... Dvh frontman Reyka Osburn comes with a solid heavy-music resume, thanks to his work with Deftones (he co-wrote the song "Lucky You"), Ghost Ride,...

Creation's Weekend of Horrors reared its head last weekend (May 14 & 15) at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott, and we've got an image gallery waiting for you that's packed to the gills with horror royalty and spooky goodness.

All the stops for this spring/summer edition were totally pulled out as eager fans were treated to talks with guests the likes of Lance Henriksen, John Carpenter, Tippi Hedren, Asia Argento, Ted Raimi, Tom Savini, Sergio Stivaletti, and many, many more.
Panels covered a wide range of movies and TV shows such as the upcoming CGI-free movie Creature and MTV’s "Death Valley", and of course there were cast reunions for Demons, Halloween, and even Subspecies.

With less than a month to go before Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life hits theaters, the first official review has landed, and it is quite positive. Sprouting from the French site Les Echos du Cinéma, we have a translation below from an IMDb user. They praise the film for its natural performances and beauty, but call out its Christian tones. It can be viewed below, followed by extensive production notes from All Things Shining. There are a lot of interesting tidbits in there, so I encourage you to read on.
In related news, the French distributor EuropaCorp have announced (via Blu-ray.com) a July 15th release date for the Blu-ray of The Tree of Life. No region coding is known yet, but that seems wildly early and highly unlikely. We’ll update the story if we hear any sort of confirmation or correction. For now, check out the review and productions.
