Great for it's time

Celebrity Golf with Sam Snead was great for it's time. Only 30 minutes in length, made it one golf show then that could NOT be boring even to non golf fans and to see the celebrities that golfed back then is amazing to watch.

Not ALL of the matches were filmed at the Lakeside Country Club, some were filmed at the Woodland Hills Country Club , The Desert Inn Country Club and others. Also, Sam did NOT win every match either.

Harry Von Zell mad a great Announcer, Even if it was a over dubbed job on his commentary and on the Sound effects.

For the time and now it's a fun show to watch.

Sam Snead plays Bob Hope.

Warning: Spoilers
Yesterday the golf channel was showing the old match between Sam Snead and Bob Hope. Most of us remember Bob Hope as an old, frail man in his 80s and 90s. But here we can see a relatively young and strong looking Hope. And, for a celebrity, had a pretty good golf game. Sam Snead of course beat him, even giving him strokes on several holes, but matches like this are always fun to watch.

Of interest to golfers of today are the distances these two men were hitting the ball. When Sam Snead hit a driver, with carry plus roll he would be out about 250 yards from the tee. When Bob Hope would hit a good drive, with roll he would be about 190 yards from the tee. This is pretty amazing when you consider that most any decent male golfer can hit drives 230 to 250 yards, and the longer hitters upwards of 300 yards. On the pro tour the ball carries 280 to 320 yards. Some of it is stronger players, but most of the gain in distance is from better equipment, both clubs and the balls.

Anyway, these matches that Snead plays with celebrities are interesting, to see the personalities and watch some old-fashioned golf.

Celebrity Golfers vs. Sam Snead
johnp-572-6616003 January 2013
Great golf from years gone by. Not only fun to watch the golfers but watch the crowds, surroundings, cars and other 1960's era stuff. No high-tech graphics or Shot-links distances here - just a man standing at a cardboard sign of the hole with a pointer showing ball positions. Some of the celebrity "golfers" were better celebrities than golfers but some others were actually very good (or at least their handicaps were!). I have been luck enough to play the courses they filmed some of the episodes and I have to tell you the mountains and courses have not changed much but the clothing, golf clubs, balls and golf carts sure have...people used to get "dressed up" to go watch golfers....nothing like today's fans.

Wish I could buy the whole series on DVD somewhere. Anyone know where I can get one?
