- In Western North Carolina lives a widow named Mary who has become embittered over how her life has turned out. She dresses in old clothes, doesn't bathe, and becomes shunned by the small mountain community where she lives. When she was young, a man seduced her and got her pregnant. He refused to marry her; instead years later he became a respected preacher and family man with two children. Ironically, his children and others harass Mary and give her the name "Crazy Mary." She ekes out a living in an old log house and tries to ignore others. One Christmas the preacher's wife decides to do "the Christian" thing and invite Mary for dinner. The climax of the film centers around this dinner and the events that follow it.—Juanita Stock
