[Foreword] Early in the eighteenth century, the roads of England were plagued with highwaymen. Most of them coarse bandits, fit for the hangman. But a few were gentlemen - bold, gallant adventurers, with an eye for a fine horse or a pretty girl. Of these the most legendary was the immortal Dick Turpin.
