Montreal — In what will undoubtedly be called “Snowpiercer”-with-zombies in countless reviews (well, including this one), director Sang-ho Yeon’s “Train To Busan,” making its North American premiere at Fantasia Film Festival, has a hook that sells the sizzle in a few short words: On a train hurtling across South Korea, passengers must fight to survive […]

The noughties had Snakes On A Plane, now this decade brings you Werewolves On A Train. The first trailer for Paul Hyett’s Howl has been released and we can reveal it to you exclusively below. More blood less Beatnik, this is not to be confused with the Allen Ginsberg biopic of the same name. This Howl is your average commuter nightmare: train delayed, obstruction on the line, night falls, full moon, werewolves arrive, bloody carnage ensues. And if that doesn’t warrant a partial travelcard refund we don’t know what does. brightcove.createExperiences();Directed by Paul Hyett (who cut his teeth doing effects work on films like of Neil Marshall's The Descent and Doomsday before making his directorial debut with 2012 revenge horror The Seasoning House) the film stars Ed Speleers as a ticket inspector dealing with some unusually hirsute fare-dodgers and co-stars Sean Pertwee and Shauna Macdonald.

Sophie Kennedy Clark plays one of the sexually active characters in director Lars von Trier’s provocative new film Nymphomaniac. For Clark, shooting the films sex scenes wasn’t much of a big deal to her.
Sophia Kennedy Clark's Nymphomaniac Sex Scenes
Clark finds it odd that sex has become more of a taboo topic in cinema than violence. "Is it not a bit of a sad day that we've found ourselves in a place where we're more immune to watching people being shot in the face or children being massacred on screen than we are seeing a bit of sex?" she told Uinterview. "Let's be honest, sex and nudity — it's not new. We all got here somehow, didn't we?”
While Django Unchained, directed by Quentin Tarantino, was the 2012 film whose violence sparked a dialogue about intensely gory acts being depicted on screen, Clark references the much-talked about whipping scene...

Time Table
Written by Eben Kandel
Directed by Mark Stevens
USA, 1956
The longevity of television’s Dexter speaks to audience interest in and creative potential of the premise in which an authoritative figure, a Bloodstain Pattern Analyst in the case of the Showtime drama, commits the very crimes he or she is specialized in thwarting. The morally ambiguous nature of said character, the possible venues to create tension, the commentary on institutions dedicated to crime investigation, and more are ripe for commentary. Films have also concerned themselves with the subject, such as the Italian psychological drama Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion and the film under review this week, 1956’s Time Table, directed by and starring Mark Stevens.
On a train heading toward Phoenix, Arizona in the wee hours of the morning, Dr. Paul Brucker (Wesley Addy) is called into duty when someone is announced gravely ill in one of the nearby cabins.

Hell’s horses! Yes, the first image of American Horror Story: Coven is a few close-ups of screaming horses. Will this season’s witch-centered storyline earn a yay or a neeeeeeigh? Let’s dig in!
We’re in the French Quarter and the time is… ago. Delphine Lalaurie (Kathy Bates) – wearing a voluminous dress that would have given Maria von Trapp carpal tunnel just to look at – is holding court at a party, showing off her various daughters (most of whom seem to be named Marie) to eligible men. We notice that the youngest – Pauline Marie – has a sassy tongue and an eye for the black servant. I think I like her.
We then join Delphine in her bedchamber, where she is putting Olay Human Blood Regenerist with Spf 215 on her face and begging her neck waddle to tighten when her husband comes in to summon her downstairs. Turns out...

In her new book Rachel Cooke re-examines the 1950s through 10 women who pioneered in their careers. In this extract she tells the stories of sisters-in-law Muriel and Betty Box, two prominent women in the British film industry
Until recently, anyone who wanted to see the film To Dorothy a Son had to lock themselves deep in the bowels of the British Film Institute off Tottenham Court Road, London, and watch it on an old Steenbeck editing machine. A little-known comedy from 1954, To Dorothy is no one's idea of a classic. It has an infuriating star in Shelley Winters, a creaky screenplay by Peter Rogers (later the producer of the Carry On series) and a set that looks as if it is on loan from a local amateur dramatics society.
We are in the home of Tony (John Gregson) and his baby-faced wife, Dorothy (Peggy Cummins). Dorothy is heavily pregnant, and confined to bed.

Cinephiles are earning their airmiles over the next couple of weeks as Venice, Telluride and Tiff explode with literally hundreds of films, all looking for attention, distribution and/or awards season consideration. But among the mix of high profile titles are some down 'n dirty genre flicks too. Either way, we've got a batch of new images for your eyeballs from a number of movies traveling the globe so let's get to it. First up, Atom Egoyan ("The Sweet Hereafter," "Exotica") tackles the West Memphis Three with his new drama "Devil's Knot." Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth lead the cast, with the latter playing a private detective investigating the case. Amy Ryan, Dane DeHaan, Stephen Moyer, and Mireille Enos co-star in this one which unspools in Toronto. The ever-so-intense Michael Shannon plays true life hitman Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman, a bloody drama about the family man who claimed to have murdered over 100 people for the mafia. In the biopic, Shannon is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta, James Franco, David Schwimmer, Robert Davi, and Stephen Dorff.
The film is co-written and directed by Ariel Vromen, who has his biggest project yet with Iceman. Vromen has directed two films previously, Danika with Marisa Tomei in 2006, and Rx with Colin Hanks, Lauren Grahan, and Eric Balfour in 2005, which he also co-wrote.
In a phoner interview, I talked with Vromen about his film, the rising star the drives it, the question of secrecy that it asks, the incredible moments of tension between Michael Shannon and Ray Liotta, and more.

Moonrise Kingdom amounted to Wes Anderson at his best. It was a relate-able story of first love, injected with Anderson’s playful wit, his sense of the absurd, and his singular visual style. The result was a $66 million worldwide gross and one of the year’s big specialty film hits. Since making his debut on Bottle Rocket, Anderson has honed a highly original voice that has sometimes hit the crossover bulls eye (Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums) and sometimes is confined to a smaller core audience (The Darjeeling Limited and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou). On a train ride in Germany where he was prepping his next film The Grand Budapest Hotel, Anderson talked about how he learned to be confident in and satisfied with his unique voice. Deadline: Moonrise Kingdom was one of your most appealing films, and it crossed well beyond your usual core audience. When you...

Today is the day that a new Taylor Swift album was released, so obviously we're doing our duty as Americans and over-analyzing her lyrics and her not-so-subtle liner note codes. True to form, Swift painstakingly sifted through the lyrics in her liner notes (which are not only tucked into the CD, but available as an iTunes download) and capitalized specific letters. Since we have too much time on our hands, we took careful notes and did a whole bunch of research so you don't have to. You're welcome.
The first song on the album, "State of Grace," basically says that love is worthwhile even if it's difficult. Her hidden code, Love Doesn't Count After Goodbye, implies a change of heart. Given the reference to Sagittarius and blue eyes, we're putting this one in the Jake Gyllenhaal column.
Which brings us to "Red," about a reckless, fast-paced love that ends abruptly.

This new poster for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter puts old Abe (Benjamin Walker) front and centre in the movie's not-entirely-historical world. On a train, to be precise. A flaming death train. Well, this is a Timur Bekmambetov movie. It was never going to be the 16.47 to Wanstead.Adapted from Seth Grahame-Smith vampire genre mash, Vampire Hunter sticks an axe into Abraham Lincoln's hand and no doubt sneaks a trick or two under that stovepipe hat, as the Prez tackles the massed ranks of the undead. The vampire cohorts are led by the exceptionally nasty Adam (Rufus Sewell), while saddling up on Team Abe are wife Mary Todd Lincoln (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and his vampire-smiting guru Henry Sturges (Dominic Cooper). To recap: that's Howard Stark and Ramona Flowers versus the massed ranks of the undead. And AlanTudyk's in the mix as Stephen A. Douglas. Fight! If you wonder what the 19th...

The big "to do" surrounding The Lone Ranger is quite funny really. I mean, a $250 million film based on a classic radio and TV show character battling werewolves? Have werewolves really become so popular to the point anyone thought that was a good idea? Then again, I guess we could ask Universal if the boardgame "Battleship" is popular enough 80+ years after its inception to warrant a $200+ million price tag for the Peter Berg-directed "adaptation"? It's not like it really matters.
If you can make enough lunch boxes and toys to guarantee enough money at the worldwide box-office nowadays, quality doesn't really matter. However, it's strange to think if they were making the exact same movie for $25 million with practical effects I'd be far more intrigued. Frankenstein and the Three Stooges had run-ins with crazy characters... why not the Lone Ranger?
No matter. You can forget it. The Hollywood Repoter...

Well, why not. A teen thriller could work right? It worked with Disturbia for the most part and yes with the right treatment we can see it working here. That is if you like remaking the masters work. Why the need to remake cinematic gold will continue to be the question over the years so we must move on and just accept that anything once good will see time in theaters again. It's just something we must deal with. So what is this project all about?...

Slingshot Productions and BBC Films have teamed up for a teen thriller inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's "Strangers On a Train," which revolves around two strangers meeting on a train and agreeing to murder the person who's making the other person's life miserable. The new version, called "Teens On a Train," a boy meets a girl who turns out to be a raving psychopath. The idea came from a competition that Slingshot ran in 2007 asking participants to write a script based on Hitchcock's work. This news comes after a judge ruled that Shia Labeouf's "Disturbia" had nothing to do with Hitchock's "Rear Window" or the short story "Window" is based on. The ruling was that the main plots are similar only at a high, unprotectable level of generality.

Exclusive: Slingshot Productions and BBC Films are co-developing a teen thriller partly inspired by Strangers On a Train. The working title is Teens On a Train. Slingshot’s hoping to shoot in 2011. Joshua St Johnston, creator of BBC fashion drama Material Girl, is the writer. St Johnston co-founded Ray Winstone’s production company Size 9. The project takes Patricia Highsmith’s novel, filmed by Hitchcock, as its inception: two strangers meet on a train and agree to murder the person who’s making the other person’s life a misery. In Slingshot’s version boy meets girl, girl turns out to be raving psychopath... The idea developed out of a teen Hitchcock scriptwriting competition that Slingshot ran in 2007. But Hitchcock/Highsmith as only the point of embarkation. Before Sunrise is another influence, Slingshot CEO Arvind Ethan David tells me. Doubtless Slingshot watched last week’s ruling by a New York...

On a train, he meets Elise (Jolie), who uses him to deceive the people that have been following her ex-lover. From the looks of the trailer below, it looks like it's part thriller, part love story. Oh, dear. I appear to have found my snark. Hold on, here we go…
Commuter train station. A panhandler kid with a sign saying “God will be watching" begs for change and then, when unsuccessful in requesting donations, pickpockets a guy’s wallet. Kinda makes the sign a little ironic, doesn't it. On a train which is pulling into the station, lights flicker and the passengers get mildly annoyed. Suddenly a man appears in the aisle.
