A praiseworthy U-Turn from Self-Destruction
CihanVercan22 December 2009
Cagan Irmak's second feature-length movie "Mustafa Hakkinda Her Sey" is my favourite from his self-written and self-directed filmography. It's a Crime/Psycho, one of the few samples of this genre. The other most known Crime/Psycho movies are "Taxi Driver(1976)" ,"Natural Born Killers(1994)" ,"American Psycho(2000)" and so on. Each of those films have their own distinguishing features and Mustafa Hakkinda Her Sey has references with them. Cagan Irmak has successfully blended these features into his storyboard.

Starting with the opening scene, where Mustafa appears alone in his car at a night time running amok, we're receiving a conceptual warning to watch him very carefully within an Expressionist cinema language. In order to explain the reasons of his depression accordingly the story takes us to a warm family bliss evening, in which Mustafa is the father. We stay there with the family whole evening, witnessing to an ordinary family portrait but to rich character introductions. The next morning while Mustafa is at work, his only son in school, his wife has a deadly road accident. So the plot begins to develop very quickly. Mustafa runs to the hospital to get two shocking news one after another leading him into a manic depressive psychosis. He begins to rake up his past thinking his wife cheated on him, then his childhood traumas floods back. After his wife's funeral, he kidnaps her date when he's discharged from hospital.

The two leading actors Fikret Kuskan and Nejat Isler, performed their roles very well; especially at the scenes where they acted together. A little issue with Irmak's directing that supporting actors and even walker-ons couldn't square with the depressive mood of the movie. Nejat Isler plays a taxi driver, cross-referencing Robert De Niro in Scorsese's Taxi Driver(1976) with similarities to Travis Bickle character in his world-view and behavior patterns. Fikret Kuskan's character Mustafa portrays Patrick Bateman from American Psycho(2000) way too much better than Christian Bale did. I've read some audience reviews where people think that Mustafa character is unreal. I strongly advise them to search for "American Psycho" and Bret Easton Ellis to realize how ordinary people become psychopathic criminals. Additionally in subplots, the torture scenes were Tarantino style and they resemble Natural Born Killers a lot.

Technical aspects of this film is below average. Irmak is good at catching the best camera angles. Sounds and visuals are good enough to keep the tension through the whole movie. Mor ve Otesi did a noteworthy job in score and soundtracks.

With this film, Irmak presents an important message for whoever has past regrets in painful memories. At the end, his note showed that he dedicates this film in the memory of his father. In the leading role Mustafa experienced that he has done some faults which were at the point of no return. Regrets can kill, they slowly eat away the soul of someone who has done something wrong and they lead eventually to self-destruction. Mustafa refused to die like that. He had irreparable faults in his past. Soon he found out that the past is the way you want to remember it.

Between anger and sadness
rawkidd19 May 2005
"Mustafa hakkinda hersey" is the best Turkish movie i've seen this year so far. Its interesting story is being told very excitingly, and Fikret Kuskan who plays the betrayed husband called Mustafa, delivers a masterpiece of work.

Director Cagan Irmak is telling the story bi-linear, since you're always changing sides between the betrayed and betrayer while watching. I really can recommend this Drama to everyone, who wants to find out his own feelings between anger and sadness.

There are also 1 or two things that maybe should have been told more precise, for instance like Mustafa's childhood. Also the final dialog could have been better, since it is one of the most important parts of Mustafa's story. But it is not screwing up things.

Bravo to everyone who worked on that film.

Good story, well told, probably the best Turkish movie in the 21st century made yet.
kayabay5 September 2004
With the potential of many alternative endings, "Mustafa Hakkinda Hersey" is a very successful movie. It is about some two or three days of a man who lost his wife in a surprising manner, and a lot more. The translation of the title is "Everything about Mustafa" since it covers his all life with minor flashbacks. The cinematography, the scenario, the rhythm and the actors are superb. I would be sorry if the movie is kept in the domestic market and not distributed to western audiences as well. Since I watched it on DVD, which is also well prepared in picture & sound quality, I'd advise all to find and watch it. The soundtrack made by "Mor ve Otesi" is also a good choice and goes parallel with the scenario. Mustafa ( Fikret Kushan ) presents an unexpected character with all details. Overall, for me an 8.5 rating won't be generous too.

A long due achievement for the Turkish Movie Industry
Acanerten23 January 2005
With everyone around him faking it and him being ignorant to the actual feelings of people in his life, Mustafa gets sucked into a paradigm shift after an unlucky(?) accident places a stranger as the key to piece together his collapsed life. Yet, Mustafa will find more than what he was looking for and maybe much more than he wished for as he listens to his life told to him in a way he never perceived before. The more it is revealed, the more he discovers what has been told cannot be untold and its ramifications keeps resonating until one becomes part of oblivion. Sometimes to live on, we choose what we see and what we believe in even if it is a lie and Mustafa will not have that luxury to live on as he used to from now on, not anymore...and you will have your share of it after Mustafa touches your life. With Mustafa going through a wide spectrum of emotional turmoil, Fikret Kuskan(Mustafa)'s performance is the highlight of the movie while Nejat Isler(Fikret)'s performance shouldn't be left unnoticed as his character goes through his share of frustration and victim psychology. Even though there were some plot problems with the coherence of the movie, overall this movie was a long due achievement for the Turkish Movie Industry with the wonderful choice of "Mor ve Otesi" as the soundtrack. Get a glass of wine and enjoy this wonderful movie and maybe you will get the urge to see the fireflies as well before everything is over.

definitely all about mustafa
bane_133 April 2005
as seen in the name "everything about mustafa" the movie points out different flashbacks to describe the character. you can't make anything out of it unless you try to think everything separately + combining them + understand the whole idea. the best Turkish movie ever and definitely deserved the Oscar for the best foreign movie ( actually i found it to be better than most Oscar nominees )

with more thought and good dialogues added to Turkish movies like "anlat istanbul" and "mustafa hakkinda hersey", already developed Spanish movie sector and developing Turkish movie sector will have a very important affect on European movies.

Excitement rises as the film goes on...
venusfrozen12 April 2006
This is a film starting with quite a low tempo that you feel you'll be watching the clash of two guys for one woman. But even in the times you feel like you're watching a film just based on the dialogs of two men you can get satisfied with the level of acting by the two actors. Most spectacularity of this film is that by not giving any clue to you that surprises will happen when you get closer to the end with the real success of the director you experience some interesting things in the film which changes your sympathy to the major roles.Or it doesn't change your opinion but lets you to some little or more eye drops. For me the most interesting comment could be said for this movie is that,in the first part you ask yourself that "Did I make a wrong decision to start watching the movie" and when the second part comes you say yourself that "Yes.This is not the film of my life but not only worth watching but also one of the best among the similar ones" As a last word I can say that this film is definitely in the best ten films directed in Turkey.Congratulations to the crew.

A Hope for the future of Turkish Cinema
opoyraz23 September 2004
Nice attempt to improve the Turkish Movie Industry but its plot is not an original idea. The performances of the players are praiseworthy, but it seems to me that it has some inefficiencies in screenplay. Especially, after the kidnapping of Fikret, the dialogs between him and Mustafa are sometimes very hilarious. I mean this is a high tension movie (at least it is expected to be) and those ridiculous speeches cause me to lose my attention and desire to the kidnapping incident. Fikret Kuskan and Nejat Isler were so successful, and even her small part Basak Koklukaya was awesome.. Despite of all above negative points, I think it is worth to watch this movie; 6.5/10

all about Mustafa
filizyarimcan5 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
It is a good movie after all. It is about Mustafa, a selfish man, a man who likes to be loved, who loves enough just to be loved back. That man eats only good food, wears only good cloths, listens only good music...and one day, he learns that his wife cheated on him with an ordinary taxi driver. The director wants to tell about Mustafa...and he is very successful, and the way he tells about him is original and easy for the audience to get. To be cheated on is very traumatic, you think why? what's wrong with me? ... The lover, Fikret, the taxi driver explains it very good, I liked that part: '' There is nothing wrong with you. Two people meet and like each other and become together.''

A perfect movie
zengili13 July 2006
A perfect movie. After watching "old boy" i thought a revenge movie could not be better than this movie. But i am so happy to have change of watching "Mustafa Hakkinde Hersey." One important point of this movie is Fikret Kuskan. i show respect him. For the last few years he shows his quality. i think he will have an Oscar for the next ten years. Mor ve Otesi, A rock group from Turkiye. They also fit the movie completely. Sometimes revenge is a meeting with your past. Reasons of many problems are hidden in our past. And as tagline Actually, nothing is what it seems. After seeing this film you need some time to think mustafa and your-self. A life without any lies. Could this be possible?

mustafa hakkinda hersey means 'all about mustapha'
suphichenko4 March 2008
it is just about a weakness of human nature. The film successfully hides what it meant to tell, till the end. You could tell if you were able to understand Turkish;the music ,although it is rock and we as turks are a total disappointment in making rock, completely suits the film(how incredible!!). The characters are not to be moral. The most primitive instinct of a mother,a murder hidden for many years, disloyalty of a wife and his husband who learns it after her death... Acting is good, scenario is too but the film is not just about that;it is one of the films that waits till the end to tell what it supposed to .This is one of the films this way:The others,Atonement and surprisingly a Turkish film;mustafa hakkinda hersey are some of the successful films this way

strong performance .. but Major flaw in plot.
afterdarkpak11 October 2020
No doubt the lead characters has given some really good performance and somehow decent quality production for Turkish cinema. the plot is not that new , there are such same movies like same plot where wife died and husband found out that she was unfaithful (red shoe diaries by zalman king).

the movie has some huge flaw in start , the reason behind why wife goes unfaithful ? because husband is busy or very uptight ? and when the story starts about the wife when she sitting n crying in Cab , then later there is no such thing that why she was crying that moment.

the movie also some side story line of husband too but it doesnt connect to the main plot but it does connect to the ending which make it not satisfying or good ending.

Braveheart6723 June 2020
Everything was good in the movie. I just did not like Fikret Kuskan. His acting is not realistic at all. Nesat isler and Serif Sezer were good. Cagan irmak's first films were much better.

Nice attempt, not good enough
sinanonline16 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is a good attempt to create something original. In fact, it is *quite* good if you know the history of the Turkish cinema. (which is quite lacking in almost everything.) The plot is presented comprehensively and there are some effective scenes with professional camera, but the presentation of the theme - facing the true self - is hindered by characters lacking motive. We do not have a movie that is comparable to "Eskiya." (Another contemporary Turkish movie.)

The forté of the movie is the horror scenes. Some contemporary techniques - apparently inspired by "Ringu" - are used successfully to create suspense. However, these scenes are rare, and fail to save the rest of the movie.

We have a comprehensive plot, successfully told in flashbacks. However, many of the causes for the behavior of the characters is missing: How come does Mustafa, successful in life business life, apparently in control, go out to chase the taxi driver while he has an orphaned child and an active business life to take care of? Apparently because underneath the strong shell, we have a weak character. In that case, how come the weak character, unearthed by the new set of events, kidnaps and keeps the taxi driver with such determination as to torture and interrogate him for days?

Even if we had a plausible explanation for this strong determination, we still see no reason for Mustafa to change his mind and let the driver go free. We are shown that Mustafa faces a terrible memory from childhood. However, we do not see how facing the memory of childhood fratricide enables Mustafa to overcome his jealousy (which is why he kidnapped the driver in the first place.)

Also we have no convincing reason for Ceren's infidelity. We have the slightest hint that Mustafa may have been too much concerned with his job, but this is not presented sufficiently. The driver has an explanation: "Women cheat on their husbands sometimes; there is no reason." This is far beyond what anyone calls convincing explanation.

The camera is professional, which is to be expected with all the experience Turkish directors had in the advertisement sector which boomed in Turkey in the last decade.

We do see "everything" about Mustafa, but "everything" about Mustafa do not come together to make a real person. The theme of "facing the true self" is not debated realistically. If you want to see redemption, watch "Schindler's List." If you want to see horror, watch "Ring." If you want to see something Turkish and original, watch "Eskiya." "Eveything About Mustafa" is simply not worth it.

Poor acting, poor direction
RussMeyer122 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
It's just the scenario that holds this piece together. Yet it's not enough. Even the cinematography didn't cut it.

After hearing much praise about this movie in Turkish media, I watched the movie with great expectations.

** Spoilers ahead *** The scene where the car hits the truck was pathetic. How expensive can it be to use a second hand car and give the audience a realistic accident? Mustafa's mother screams like mad while Mustafa is destroying her wife's sculptures. What kind of scream is that? WTF? It just doesn't fit in.

The scene where Mustafa is overtaking the fat lady is another comedy. Even though there's plenty of room, the witch keeps driving in the middle of the road and just won't let Mustafa drive by. Why? I have never came across to such dumb driving. It's not realistic at all.

What a waste of time. I see the high IMDb rating and laugh my back off! Nationalists at work, I guess. If this flick had been produced in USA, it would have a hard time to pass the 6.0 line.

Overall, it's a failed attempt in making of a thriller...
ziaulh21 August 2010
I don't want to sound too harsh about this film but it was very hard for me to finish the film. But I indeed did finish the film as it was my very first Turkish movie. And at the end, the only thing I could say was that, I just wasted 2 hours of time from my life.

Well, the movie started just fine. As it progresses it gets worse. Just at the point when the film should have had a magnetic flick, it starts to bore the viewer by amateur acting and bad direction. Everything seemed to stop and dragged against the will. The whole 'finding the truth' seemed really boring and less twisting. There was no tension that I felt while watching it, neither any suspense. The main character should have acted much better, although other actors seem to act much better especially the guy whose been kidnapped.

Overall, it's a failed attempt in making of a thriller... I don't know what's wrong with all the viewers rating it above 7.

surprised about the lame and boring story
sankt-ugur2 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
i can not believe that there is only 1 year between this crap movie an the masterpiece babam ve oglum from the same director. how could this happen? maybe there is a lookalike from cagan irmak :)

many many faults in this story making me laugh. BUT this is a drama/thriller, no need to laugh in normal case.

the best thing is the grave few meters away from the main entrance. a completely not hidden place, you can see it from the street " hello, look ...here is a dead person....."

the worse acting between the "bad guy"and the taxi driver is the highlight. in not one second its for me interesting to hear what the bad guy is saying, because he is talking like in soap. the quality of the dialogs are the main problem of this movie.

the story is strange: as a small boy at a age of 10 he kills his own big brother with a pillow (that is really hard to believe) later he is the boss of media firm. (what a cliché) at the end he wants to kill the lover of his wife.

positive: the scene in the restaurant is fantastic. you can see and feel how crazy this man is. he is in a fight with the waiter. in this moment he forgets his wife and friends and acting like a bad ass.

hope this was the last thriller from cagan irmak, he is much better in drama.

Gothic Melodrama about a Dysfunctional Antihero
l_rawjalaurence25 January 2016
Sometimes it's wise to set aside one's prejudices against a film and consider it on its own merits as a contribution to the knowledge of the society that produces it.

Such is the case with MUSTAFA HAKKINDA HERŞEY (ALL ABOUT MUSTAFA). A Gothic melodrama reveling in its extremities, Çağan Irmak's film in my opinion piles absurdity on absurdity culminating in a sentimental denouement. But perhaps I am looking at it through jaundiced eyes.

The plot is straightforward: Mustafa (Fikret Kuşkan) is a successful businessman with a wife (Başak Köklükkaya) and son (Arda Seçgün) who runs his own film and advertising business. Life seems fairly good to him, although he does seem a little extreme in his reactions, especially during meetings. His wife Ceren dies unexpectedly in a car accident, that sends Mustafa into paroxysms of grief. Later on he discovers that she had had an affair with taxi-driver Fikret (Nejat İsler), so Mustafa determines to wreak revenge by imprisoning Fikret in a lonely house and forcibly extracting the truth from him. As time passes, we learn that Mostafa has had a highly troubled childhood, which explains why he reacts so excessively to the news of his wife's death.

The film is full of lurid sequences using tilted cameras and vivid colors to denote Mustafa's tortured state of mind. While alone with Fikret, he subjects the unfortunate taxi-driver to extreme forms of punishment, often involving S&M, which makes us feel that there is a sexual dimension to his sadism. The film includes tropes familiar from other Çağan Irmak films - the isolated house recalls KAÇAN FIRSATLAR LİMİTED; the sculptures adumbrate TAMAM MİYİZ?, and the sadism recalls KARANLIK TAKİLER. Throughout we are led to believe that Mustafa's behavior can be attributed to his childhood, especially his relationship to his father (who was equally sadistic).

At the same time he is portrayed as a family man with a touching concern for Kerem. This suggests some kind of cathartic desire; once he has exorcised the devil of childhood from his consciousness, he can be somehow released from mental torment. The diabolic aspects of the film are well brought out through the use of fast cutting.

The film does not tell us much about contemporary Turkish society; rather it suggests that human beings have to find their own means of coping with existence. Sometimes they cannot do this, and hence descend into abnormality.
