Top Spanish Titles brought to market at MipTV:
“Dating in Barcelona,” (Filmax)
Produced by Filmax’s Arca, Catalan public broadcaster 3Cat and Prime Video in Spain, a first season of “Dating in Barcelona” bowed last year in Spain to big ratings, both on its first-window debut on 3Cat and on Prime Video, where it became one of the streaming service’s most-watched debuts. A modern take on romance and sex in an online age, “Dating in Barcelona” also reflects a swing in TV towards a lighter, more episodic fare, whether in crime thrillers or other categories. Each episode features two dates which, as Variety has observed, play off each other. Powered in creative terms by Pau Freixas, behind iconic series from “Red Band Society” To “I Know Who You Are” And “Todos Mienten,” All Produced By Filmax, “Dating In Barcelona” features a top-tier cast, this time round in Season...

Spain’s film and TV industries are in their second wave as standout content providers for global streamers. Some of the country’s most intriguing titles will take the international stage this weekend at MipTV in Cannes.
Built on a foundation of hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel,” “Velvet” and “Locked Up,” a new era of internationally renowned content creation in Spain kicked off in 2018 with Alex Pina’s blockbuster series “Money Heist,” picked up by Netflix.
Since then, Spain has enjoyed a place among the steadiest content suppliers for major players worldwide, taking advantage of its often character-driven dramas, high-quality creators and producers, and a language spoken by more than 600 million people around the globe.
Although the market is continuously evolving, local industry has adapted to different new business models, entering bigger and more ambitious productions, often via co-production. Spanish fiction’s global popularity continues to grow to accommodate audience appetites.

Atresmedia TV’s “Dreams of Freedom,” Rtve’s “Detective Touré” and Mediterráneo’s “Fentanyl: A Deadly Epidemic,” feature in Spain Content Goldmine: In Demand Like Never Before, a showcase of new and upcoming Spanish series unspooling Jan. 23 on the first day of Content Americas.
The title’s no hype. Since “Money Heist” became Netflix’s first true-blue global non-English blockbuster in 2018, Spain has consistently seen its top shows and movies rank high in global streamer charts, or sell worldwide, such as The Mediapro Studio’s “The Head.”
In 2022, in Europe, most fiction titles commissioned by global streamers were produced in Spain (34) and the U.K. (32), according to the European Audiovisual Observatory.
In 2023, film and TV titles from Spain have ranked No. 1 on Netflix’s global non-English Top 10 charts for more weeks – 13 – than those from any other country in the world, apart from South Korea. This month, after dropping on Netflix on Jan.

Not to sound like a stereotype, but I don't particularly get along with my mother-in-law. But the situation in the latest Netflix thriller, "Locked Up," is a great reminder that things could always be much, much worse. Despite little fanfare upon release and next to no promotion tied to it, "Locked In" has been consistently holding it down on the streamer's Top 10 list since it arrived on November 1. If you've not heard of the film, here's the official synopsis:
Katherine, a former Hollywood actor, wakes up in the hospital unable to move. She's been hit by a car and suffers from locked-in syndrome — her eyes are the only thing she's able to move. Through her nurse, Nicky, we find out what's led to Katherine's hospitalization. Katherine, communicating with her via letter board, blinks when Nicky reads the correct letter: She claims there's been a murder. Through flashbacks, we see snapshots...

Almost 20 years after recording the follow-up to their beloved 2003 album Ghetto Pop Life, Danger Mouse and Jemini have shared their long-shelved Born Again.
Originally released on September 9th, 2003, Ghetto Pop Life marked Danger Mouse’s first official album released on a record label. He went on to work with the likes of Mf Doom, CeeLo Green, The Shins’ James Mercer, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, but before that, he and Brooklyn rapper Jemini recorded Born Again.
A press release describes the unreleased record as more introspective than the duo’s braggadocios debut, but lead single “Brooklyn Basquiat” still has Ghetto Pop Life’s scrappy quality. “I made a few records but I’m still struggling,” Jemini admits, though moments later, he spits, “The issue that I’m trying to address in this song/ Is how a n**** stay fresh this long.” Complete with a flute melody and an interpolation of The Notorious B.

Spain’s Vertice 360, one of the country’s leading indie production-distribution companies, has picked up from FilmSharks all Spanish rights to “El juego” (“The Game”), starring Maggie Civantos and Nico Furtado, of Netflix’s “El Marginal.”
Written-directed by first-timer Paco Sepúlveda, “The Game” has bowed a trailer ahead of its Spanish theatrical release, scheduled by Vertice 360 for Sept. 1.
“The Game” tells the story of Victor (Furtado) and Eva (Civantos), a couple which broke up after several years and due to the emergency lockdown are forced to live together.
In order not to go crazy, and make the confinement more bearable, they decide to play a game that has two rules: start from scratch as if nothing had happened and conclude their relationship when the confinement ends.
“This is an intimate portrait, with the lockdown like a very subtle context, turning on forgiveness, the importance of loving well and the acceptance of loss,...

In April 2018, Netflix announced that Spanish heist thriller “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”) had become the U.S. streaming service’s most-watched non-English series ever.
With a Spanish series crowned as the first foreign-language blockbuster at the company that has transformed entertainment worldwide, Spain’s expansion — long nurtured by hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel” and “Locked Up” — well and truly lifted off.
Building on that success, in March 2021, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez unveiled the Avs Hub Plan, which would invest €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion) into Spain’s audiovisual sector.
For a country in which the word españolada was used to write off supposed second-rate homegrown fare, the re-positioning of Spain’s film and TV industries as core drivers in its digital post-pandemic “reindustrialization” is little short of a revolution. Spain, Cannes Marché du Film’s 2023 country of honor, now accounts for seven of the 20 entries in...

Back in the days of “I am Curious Black,” a 1970 Lois Lane story about Lois using a machine to become a black woman; she does so to see what it was like to be black.
Back then the good folks at DC did not think twice about a black artist or writer. Now, if a story with a black character comes down the pipe, the net is in an uproar if black creators are not involved.
Me? I say the white boys have at it. A good story, like a good character, is colorblind. Trying or even wanting to ban white people from writing black characters is as horribly short sided, stupid, and as prejudiced as banning Muslims from America.
A white writer telling a story featuring a black character is one thing. Telling a story where they try and define the black experience on some level is quite another.

There's a running gag in the first episode of alt-comedian Maria Bamford's new Netflix comedy series Lady Dynamite where guest star Patton Oswalt, ostensibly playing a cop in Bamford's La neighborhood, keeps breaking character to warn her against doing stand-up on her show, listing all the famous comics who have already done it: "You've got Louie, Seinfeld, Chappelle, Amy Schumer, my two pilots..." Eventually, other comedians — some of whom also did failed shows that featured them performing material from their stage act — turn up to express their own dismay. But even though Bamford is playing herself and drawing on both her past work and private life, no one who watched Lady Dynamite (executive produced by Bamford, Pam Brady, and Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz, it debuts tomorrow) for even a minute would think to mistake it for another Seinfeld knock-off — or even an imitation of Louie, where Bamford has appeared a few times.

Despite a slight uptick in quality, Shadowhunters is still disappointingly far, far from the show it could have been...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 Dead Man's Party
It’s not saying much, but this was the best episode of Shadowhunters so far. With most of the major characters introduced and most of the basic rules of the universe already established, there was a bit more breathing room for things to happen. And with most of the worst aspects of the show pushed discreetly out of sight, there was even time to have some fun.
So, again, we pick up pretty much exactly where the last episode left off, with Simon being abducted by vampires who think Clary knows where the Mortal Cup is and quite fancy nicking it for themselves. That sense of continuity is quite nice; it can be disconcerting to feel like characters in a TV...

Liv has found herself in a lot of different (and difficult) situations throughout the first two seasons of iZombie, but the spot she ends up in the show’s Dec. 1 episode, “The Hurt Stalker,” may be the most challenging one yet. As the photos below (and the one above) show, Liv somehow winds up getting thrown in jail, and it’s not clear what for. As the description for the episode states, she does eat a stalker’s brains, which means that she’ll be exhibiting some some stalker-esque behavior, but could that really be what causes her to get locked up? Elsewhere in “The Hurt Stalker,” Vaughn and Gilda still seem to be hard at work on their new product, and it will be interesting to see how Liv’s blood (which Gilda stole a couple of weeks ago) will fit into the equation. Also, Vaughn and Major, both using Max Rager’s gym,...

Somehow, in a TV landscape where every cable channel, streaming service, gaming platform, and smart watch has to develop at least one grim and gritty drama series, the darkest show on television isn't "The Leftovers" or even "The Walking Dead," but a silly, if stunningly committed, Comedy Central half-hour called "Review." The show, which just wrapped up its amazing second season, follows beige and bespectacled "reviewer of life" Forrest MacNeil (Andy Daly, who also executive produces the show, which is adapted from an Australian comedy) as he is assigned experiences by his viewers — What's it like to join the Mile High Club? What's it like to catfish someone? — that he must then do and rate on a five-star scale. Over the course of the first season, we saw the show tear Forrest's life apart, as he had to divorce his wife, inadvertently got his ex-father-in-law killed, and was committed to...

Some films take hundreds of hours of tedious work and countless exhausted nights of ulcerous brooding. Some simply make themselves. “The Wolfpack” was shot mostly on New York’s Lower East Side by home video masters the Angulo brothers. Locked up in their apartment for over a decade, held captive by a paranoid father and co-dependent mother, they filmed what they knew. What they knew was the films they saw, some five thousand of them, carefully stacked DVDs that represented ninety-nine percent of the outside world. This movie is a look at that world through their eyes. The family consists of six […]...

Baby Blues: Berg’s Troubled and Troubling Feature Debut
Treated to a chilly reception following its premiere at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival last spring, the feature debut of documentarian Amy Berg will see a theatrical release amidst the encroaching fanfare of her next highly provocative doc concerning teen sex rings in Hollywood, An Open Secret, hitting theaters only a few weeks later. The timing is certainly convenient for Every Secret Thing, perhaps a move to overshadow the critiques of her latest, as Berg seems noticeably less comfortable in the realm of narrative storytelling, especially if you’ve seen her hailed work on Deliver Us From Evil and West Memphis Three, now part of a growing body of work haunted by the specter of sexual transgressions involving preadolescents. This latest is based on a novel by Laura Lippman, a mystery writer who began as a journalist, which seems an inspired...

Unpopular opinion of the week: Monday’s Sleepy Hollow could have benefitted from more Katrina.
I know. For at least half the season, I’ve been advocating reduced screen time for the witch — or, at least, a purpose for her that’s more than wringing of hands and botching of spells.
But after the ending to last week’s episode, in which it appeared that Red had accidentally catapaulted over to the dark side, I really wanted to see what Mrs. Crane was up to.
