A pretty forgettable and unsexy movie Warning: Spoilers
"Bin ich sexy?" is already a title as baity and uninspired as it gets, so I did not expect a lot from this film. And this is also how things turned out in this 90-minute movie by Kathrin Feistl and Sabine Brodersen. It was a pretty disappointing watch for the most part. There is not one main reason for that. It is a mix of several factors, such as the script being really uninspired and the (child) acting not being any better. Of course, it is perfectly fine if a film goes for random happenings during everyday life and does not try to include great action explosions, but then such a film needs to deliver in terms of character developments and this one here does not go beyond the very basic surface at all. It is not a complete failure during its slightly under 90 minutes. Here and there, we have an okay scene, but it is far from enough for a full feature film.

One major problem is that the story here is so generic and nothing special. We have an obese girl who dreams of becoming a model, but of course there are major obstacles (including love) that have an impact on her self-conscience. And this is all there is really. Occasionally we find out about the girl's mother who struggles with the dead of one of her men and there are more children (from other men) who add absolutely nothing to the story at all. They are just there. If there is any good thing about the film, then this may be the dialogues who were not as bad as most of the rest. Of course, this is also not enough. Far from it, actually. I give this film a thumbs down and do not recommend the watch.

Stay away if you're older than 13

You might like this movie if you like German movies in general. On the other hand this one is as dull as all the others. "Flashback" (1998) was the last German movie entertaining and funny enough to watch it twice. I can't judge if an actor is good or bad. I'm not an expert. All I can say is I just didn't like to have my eyes on the ones I met in this film. Neither my ears, they speak like they have to read a student's script. Nothing more to say about the script anyway. Same with the camera views. After 10 minutes I wanted to leave the theatre but my buddy wanted to stay. I think he consumes anything he paid for to the very end, even if it's a punch on the head. After 30 minutes I wanted revenge. That is why I'm writing these lines. The last 30 minutes me and my buddy had a lot of fun speculating the potential of far more worse turns in the plot. If you love Soaps, don't miss this one. I you're more into cool acting and surprising stories better look out for a Danish movie.

Good capture of teen girl issues and goals and troubles.

This film deals with a teen girls desire to become a model despite some body image problems. Issues of loss of a step father and some conflict with the mother add up to a lot of problems for the main character. Sub plots deal with the mother and her needs and starting a new relationship with a male co-worker. Adding a great deal of humor to the situation are a brother and sister in the family. Diversity issues that you might not think of when thinking of German films are handled as a matter of fact and with skill. The film deals with the body image problem quite well. New problems and goals for the teenager are handled with imagination and creativity that are sadly lacking in many teen films and television programs in this country. It would be great to have this film shown in the USA and get teen feed back for this German film.

One of the best German films in recent times (minor spoilers)

Warning: Spoilers
This is the third German movie that I watched. Previously I've seen Goodbye Lenin & Vaya Con Dios, and I really enjoyed them. These recent movies have helped the German film industry away from the "all-sex" stigma it has been associated with all this time. Instead it improves the plot and characterization on the same level as French cinema, perhaps even surpasses it.

The movie tells the story about the chubby girl Mareike Falken (Marie-Luise Schramm) who aspire to become a model to escape her own insecurities: she had just recently lost her stepfather (whom she loved dearly), constantly clashing with her mother, jealousy with her younger siblings and disliked by most of her friends at school.

And to make things worst, she suffered from a disease which cause her hair to fall out and threaten her dreams. How will she survive this? Is she fated to be unhappy forever?

I really like they way the conflict is portrayed. Some of them might be a little harsh but in real life, that's what most likely to happen. This will not be complete without the role of Mareike's mother Jutta that was portrayed fantastically by Birge Schade. She has to cope with her daughter's rebellion and needs to have her own life at the same time.

Overall, I found the movie to be very emotional, not only because I can relate to every single issue, but the fact that despite all their differences, Marieke was the one her mother's loved the most in the end.

Everyone was clapping hands when the movie ended. It was a great experience for me. Look forward to watch more German cinemas in the future. And please release the DVD in Sydney. Danke schön und tsusch!
