Shonda Rhimes was honored at Variety’s Power of Women, presented by Lifetime, in New York on Thursday for her work with the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, a non-profit dance school that offers classes to disenfranchised communities.
Rhimes was aware of Debbie Allen’s work from a young age, having been a fan of her 1980s TV show “Fame.” Years later, Rhimes’ eldest daughter took classes at the academy, and Rhimes and Allen became fast friends. Allen eventually became an executive producer, director and actor on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and in 2022, Rhimes opened a permanent location for Dada in Mid-City.
“They call her Ms. Allen. Her students are aged 3 to 93. They are all sizes, all colors, all abilities, all talent levels,” Rhimes said on stage at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.. “Some are kids like mine — overprivileged. But some are not. Some don’t have homes. Some cannot pay for classes.

Bailey (Chandra Wilson) has had enough. In TV Insider’s preview of the May 2 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Bailey needs a moment to rant to Owen (Kevin McKidd) about everything on her plate. Bailey’s got a lot of complaints she needs to get off her chest. “Do you know how tired I am? I have three jobs. I run a clinic. I’m residency director, a full-time surgeon… and I’m a mom,” Bailey tells Owen. “Actually, that’s four jobs. I’m lucky if I get five hours of sleep a night.” She’s upset because she took time out of her “busy, sleep-deprived life to do something about the well-being of our interns, so they don’t end up stressed or run down or burnt out because I am a damn good teacher, and I care about these people.” Owen hasn’t had a moment to get a word in yet.

Love is what many of us are inadvertently drawn to within the series.
But it also garners the most drama, and some of it is contrived and unnecessary.
It is far too familiar now for television series to put some of the most notable couples through the wringer for the sole purpose of angst and drama. Yes, we're looking at you, Chenford.
Unfortunately, the status quo for many series has become putting interesting characters together and then showing how terribly they are at conflict resolution.
It's like series are so determined to capitalize off the drama and angst within relationships that they don't even bother investing in any other angle.
It's become frustrating that series have resorted to the same patterns when showcasing their couples and what they go through rather than delivering on the more realistic and inspiring option of serving as positive examples for relationships.

CBS is taking a page out of Netflix’s playbook by announcing its programming success in the billions of minutes watched.
If you were wondering what that might mean to a broadcast network, it measures out to 456 billion minutes of CBS programming watched in the first four months of 2024.
With two new hits on its hands — Tracker and Elsbeth — this doesn’t surprise us in the least.
Here’s the real measure of their success, though.
Viewers delivered over 30% more time spent in front of CBS programming than Netflix and over 231% more than all other streamers combined.
No wonder they’re patting themselves on the back.
Those are incredible numbers that often go unnoticed when you use traditional ratings tools to deliver the news.
Even crazier, the time spent watching CBS programming has increased by 5.8% over the same period in 2023.
People often wonder how shows can be considered a success...

The saying ‘success comes to those who wait’ is relevant for many celebrities in Hollywood who have ridden the wave of failure to achieve stardom. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is an actor whose career followed a similar path. While the star was the toast of the town on television in the 2000s with shows like The Walking Dead and Supernatural to his credit, his journey to the big leagues wasn’t easy.

Despite entering the industry in the 90s, Morgan spent many years auditioning for that one big break which eluded him constantly. Even when his manager who no longer believed in his talents dumped him, the charismatic star proved that perseverance always pays rich dividends by proving her totally wrong.

Chicago Fire is back from another hiatus, but maybe the writers needed a longer break.
I'm not trying to shade anyone, but let's face it — like many others this season, this episode lacked a certain something. Substance? Interest? Whatever it was, it was missing.
When you have a show with this many characters, and you're constantly introducing new ones, it has to be hard to keep track of the storylines you're putting together. That's no reason to jump the shark, though, and it's starting to feel like that's what's happening.
On Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 10, we at least had a bit of a theme going on. Most of the stories focused on family.
Hermann learned how to track his kids' locations on their phones, Cruz dealt with a potential threat regarding Javi's adoption, and Severide came close to having to watch Stella fall to her death.
Just another day in Chicagoland,...

If you read the headline and are asking yourselves, pilots? what pilots? — you are not wrong. It’s been largely a 2024 pilot season without pilots. A grand total of maybe one of them is expected to factor into any fall decisions as the broadcast networks prepare to unveil their schedules, starting with CBS tomorrow, May 2.
Needless to say, the broadcast pilot season is no longer the industry obsession it once was this time of year, with back-to-back disruptions from the pandemic and the dual Hollywood strikes providing the proverbial final nail in the coffin of the decades-old pilot cycle. But for tradition’s sake, here are some insights into the networks’ current development plans.
There is no more stacked lineup for next season than CBS’ with three new drama series, Young Gibbs prequel NCIS: Origins; Matlock, starring Kathy Bates; and Watson, headlined by Morris Chestnut; and two new comedies, Poppa’s House,...

One thing Grey's Anatomy has always been good at is tear-jerking moments. Whether it's the heartbreaking story of a patient or the interpersonal drama between two beloved characters, Shonda Rhimes knows all the buttons to the viewers' fragile hearts, and she's not afraid to push them in order to make great television.
Some of the most emotional scenes in the show come from the episodes at the end of season 8 and the beginning of season 9, where all of the characters deal with the plane crash and its horrific aftermath. Many Grey's fans cite these episodes as some of the most tragic on TV. However, the more we watch them, the more there is to criticize.

Showrunners are the creative visionaries of a series.
They might not be the original creators, but they cover all aspects of the creative elements, evolve the show's vision, and decide where the story and character arcs will go.
They run the writing rooms, head the development, hire writers, and ensure actors are kept happy and that the budget is not exceeded.
Series are usually a collective effort, with writers giving their thoughts, but showrunners have the final say and are essential.
Where would the industry be without people like Shonda Rhimes, Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things), and Ryan Murphy?
It would be mundane and repetitive.
Intelligent and prolific showrunners are the difference between a hit and a flop.
They set an unwavering tone for their ideas, and consistency is vital.
If the reason you fell in love with a series is altered or gone one day, then the connection created is absent,...

Chicago Fire has proven itself over the course of its twelve-season run.
One of its most senior cast members, Taylor Kinney, has given the show (and its fans) plenty to love in his years of playing Kelly Severide.
Because Kinney took a leave of absence during Season 11 following a mysterious personal matter, fans have long feared that a more permanent absence could be on the horizon for Severide.
Given how much character development had been invested into Severide, it's obvious why the show opted to keep his future open while Kinney was on leave.
Good thing, too, because he came back in Season 12 with a bang and seems to be home for good — at least for now.
Severide and his relationship with his wife, fellow firefighter Stella Kidd, have been a huge point of interest for the show.
Fans love their chemistry, and we all enjoyed watching them get their happy ending.

The post-event TV lead-out is a delicate thing. Whenever major television telecasts – like, say, the Super Bowl, the Olympics, or the premiere or finale of a super-high-rated reality show – end, something has to come on afterward, and most shows chosen for the coveted slot take the responsibility very seriously. Lead-out programming usually catches hundreds of thousands if not millions of extra eyes since watch parties all over the country get caught up chatting or celebrating and fail to change the channel. Or, better yet, they get hooked on the first few minutes of whatever show's in front of them.

While Greta Gerwig’s Academy Award-nominated “Barbie” was the highest-grossing film of 2023, as we’ve seen over the course of the last year, it angered and irritated many. Shonda Rhimes is worried about the future of television.
In an interview with Variety, the powerful writer-producer expressed concern about the “uncertain” nature of TV writing as a career going forward, as Hollywood contracts, studios avoid taking risks, and attention spans shrink.
“It’s a completely different landscape, a completely different landscape,” the “Bridgerton” executive producer said. “And I feel like when I look forward, I have no idea. It’s very clear to me that my children only want to watch things that are this long because of YouTube or whatever. [She measures an inch with her fingers.] Sitting down and watching a movie is very rare for them. It’s not the same as it was for us. Everything’s changing. I think there will always be storytelling; I just don’t know what form it’s going to take.”

It’s well known that in her decades-long career, Shonda Rhimes — the writer behind such television sensations as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “Bridgerton” — has smashed pervasive racist-casting tropes, and in doing so, changed the literal face of TV, whether that meant having “Scandal” revolve around Kerry Washington’s antihero Olivia Pope or elevating Regé-Jean Page to thirsty heights as a Black duke in Regency England on “Bridgerton.”
What’s talked about less is how Rhimes has changed the way people speak. Any parent of a teenager who’s heard the derisive usage of “pick me” from Meredith’s “Pick me! Choose me! Love me!” speech in Season 2 of “Grey’s Anatomy” — used to describe, according to the Urban Dictionary, “a woman that is willing to do anything for male approval” — can tell you of Rhimes’ enduring power. Especially since that oratory was delivered in 2005, and given new life on TikTok.

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem delivered its second straight No. 1 showing among streaming titles, leading the rankings for the last week of March. The acquired series top 10 had several new entrants, thanks in part to a change in how Nielsen reports the numbers.
The ratings service says it made an “enhancement” to its Streaming Content Ratings, which is the basis for the weekly top 10 lists, that results in a number of programs being added to the Scr product. (They weren’t previously “due to business agreements which preceded the rankings, coupled with the associated technical aspects of measurement.”) The affected programs stream mostly on Hulu and Peacock after airing on linear networks.
The upshot is that former Fox series The Resident (1.48 billion minutes on Hulu and Netflix) and animated mainstays Family Guy (837 million minutes on Hulu) and American Dad (619 million on Hulu) all made their first appearance in the top...

Beginning with the March 25-31 viewing window, Nielsen has expanded its streaming measurement capability, resulting in the company’s ability to report the viewership of a number of titles for which previously unavailable. Per Nielsen, a combination of previous business agreements and technical aspects of measurement prevented several acquired series from inclusion in its weekly rankings, and while most of those titles would not have made the Top 10 anyways, some are debuting for the first time thanks to more accurate analysis.
Among those titles is “The Resident,” which appeared on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for the first time during this viewing window in the No. 2 position with 1.5 billion minutes watched. The medical procedural ran on Fox for six seasons from 2018 to 2023 before being canceled, and has seen increased popularity since being added to Netflix in early March, though it was already available on Hulu.

After the success of One Chicago, a franchise co-produced by Wolf Entertainment and NBCUniversal that began with the firefighting procedural Chicago Fire and expanded into several spinoffs, ABC also decided to try its hand at franchising.
In partnership with Shondaland, the network turned Grey's Anatomy into a TV franchise, first with the spinoff Private Practice, also a medical drama, and then with the action-drama Station 19, which, like Chicago Fire, follows the employees of a fictional fire station as they navigate their personal and professional lives. The only difference is that the action moves from Chicago to Seattle, and the plot is much more action-packed and thrilling.
And so, Station 19 has been coming to the small screens of ABC viewers for six full years now. In addition, Season 7, as announced last December, is the final one, so we don't have many episodes left. At the same time, of course,...

The raging inferno that is a passionate and devoted fanbase with a mission can never be put out.

Twenty years is a long time -- for a relationship or a TV series like Grey's Anatomy. Just when you think there's nothing more to do, surprise!
Fans continue to tune into Grey's every season for the latest medical cases, relationship drama, and robust storytelling.
We don't get as much Meredith these days, but there is still enough to satisfy viewers, including the relationship mishaps with her new love interest.
While the show doesn't have the same pizzazz and character compatibility as it did in the early years, there is plenty of relationship messiness to entice fans.
But no matter how great -- or bad -- things get at Gsm, some relationships have happened in the last 20 years that fans will never forget. And some never got the ending they deserve.

Back in 2009, a horror film called Orphan told us the story of a married couple who adopts a 9-year-old Russian girl only to discover that she’s actually a criminal adult passing herself off as a child. The film was loosely based on the true story of Barbora Skrlova, a 30-something woman who pretended to be a 13-year-old and did some very twisted things that were very different than what we saw in Orphan. In 2012, a sad case that made it into news reports reminded people of Orphan. It was the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who was adopted by American parents who began to suspect she was much older than records said she was. The Grace case has been covered on Dr. Phil and the docu-series The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and now the Hulu streaming service is moving forward with a Natalia Grace-inspired...

CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after two. The news is not surprising as Deadline revealed earlier this week that both dramas were heavily on the bubble and in grave danger.
That despite CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd being solid ratings performers. With the entire CBS schedule doing well this season and three new drama series joining in 2024-25, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson (in addition to a second season of the Australian NCIS: Sydney), the network was faced with painful decisions, and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas are the least watched CBS drama series this spring in both linear and multi-platform ratings.

The docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV posted Max’s best streaming numbers to date for its premiere week.
The show, which streamed on Max concurrent with its on-air premiere on ID, had 1.25 billion minutes of viewing for the week of March 18-24. That’s the largest weekly total for any series on Max in the nearly four years of Nielsen’s streaming rankings, edging out the 1.19 billion for The Last of Us in early 2023.
Netflix’s 3 Body Problem grabbed the overall No. 1 spot for the week (it premiered March 21), racking up 1.37 billion minutes over its first four days. The sci-fi series narrowly beat Prime Video’s remake of Road House, which had 1.32 billion minutes of viewing in the United States. Amazon had earlier claimed that the movie was Prime Video’s biggest film premiere worldwide so far.
