A Desperate Bet for a Movie
hseldon1029 September 2005
In the Mexican Movie market, movies were beginning to look cliché. One of the reasons is that most movies provide Mexico City-centric views, and the other reason is that many try to imitate, without success, hits like "Y Tu Mamá Tambien", or "Amores Perros"...

7 Días is a heavy bet for an alternative style of cinema, with a view outside of Mexico City.

It is a funny story that summarizes the culture of Monterrey, a story of desperate success, which mirrors the history of the city, the value of heavy bets, an alternative sort of comedy, and a passion for U2.

It is, in a very real sense, like the Heroes del Silencio song, a bet for rock n' roll.

The movie is successful in reflecting the culture of the newer generation of the city, the social dynamic of the country from a Monterrey perspective, and the successful history of taking chances, reflection of the entrepreneur spirit of the city.

It is a recommended movie for anyone trying to find a good laugh, and a better understanding of Mexico outside of the capital.

The best part of the movie is the editing, although it starts slow, the ending is incredibly emotive. The views from the city and the cinematography is also pretty good, with the cameraman's ability to transform the "Edificio Acero" into a postcard view! As an inhabitant of Monterrey it is also exciting to see a movie that is so funny and successful in the management of its theme, and I found it weird to actually recognize the locations in which the actions transpired...

Acting is also very good, though probably not Oscar-Worthy.

In general, this movie is a must-see for Mexican Cinema fans, it is a turning point for the movement, and a very funny one too!

A Great Film
tessav8712 January 2007
I must admit that my reason for seeing this film was none other than hottie Jaime Camil. I didn't even have a clue as to what the plot was, but nonetheless I was determined to watch it. Well, I was in for a really good treat because this movie completely blew me away. Although I am Mexican, I am saddened to say that I am not a big fan of Mexican movies. I am a proud Mexican, but for some reason these movies don't attract me. This movie was a good slap in the face for me because I realized that perhaps Mexican movies CAN be good. I was actually shocked at the very interesting plot and the performance by all the actors, including Camil, of course. Over all this movie definitely deserves 2 thumbs up for it is entertaining and funny.

Better than expected and U2
Easi25 October 2009
It's simple. It's a very good movie. Not fantastic but wery good. The plot is not really new. A guy who gambles with money that doesn't belong to him and looses it to the mob. To survive he has to achieve an impossible task. Retrieve the money in 7 days and to organize a U2 concert. His probable executioner, being a big U2 fan, helps him in this task. A new uncommon friendship? You feel nostalgia, drama, humor, love etc. all over the scenes and places. Cinematography is nice, music fantastic, the characters, belonging to different worlds, make it very short-wile listening to them... I had a good time, time passed, the finale as U2 fan just fantastic.

low-keyed comedy
Buddy-5118 June 2009
An offbeat charmer from south-of-the-border, Fernando Kalife's "7 Dias" sets its tale of Quixotic dreamers and lowlife criminals within the context of a loopy pop culture obsession.

The obsession, in this case, is the Irish band U2, which is scheduled to perform in Mexico as part of a worldwide tour. Claudio Caballero, a fledgling concert promoter, decides he's going to find a way to lure the group to his own hometown, even if that means having to deal with some mighty shifty and unsavory characters to make that event a reality. In fact, Caballero's been given seven short days to make good on his promise of booking the band - or face the consequences at the hands of the Mexican mafia.

There's not a great deal of substance to what is essentially a high-concept, wish-fulfillment fantasy, but the sheer originality of the premise - along with the breezy, tongue-in-cheek and slightly sentimental tone of the work - goes a long way towards winning us over to the movie's side. To top it off, there are engaging performances by Eduardo Arroyuelo as Caballero, Martha Higareda as his supportive girlfriend, and Jaime Camil as a soft-hearted tough guy who views Bono as nothing less than a living saint sent to earth to intercede for all those wise enough to put their faith in him. And who would argue with that?

Good Mexican Cinema again
latifilm9 November 2006
Finally after many years of waiting and under the excellent guidance of the acclaimed writer and film Director Fernando Kalife, the great Mexican cinema comes to life again across the borders . This Film, winner from Cine Festival Guadalupe in San Antonio,Texas presents a modern story where passion, loyalty and betrayal gets unexpectedly mixed in a Urban MAFIA/Rock environment. The movie will keep you glued to your seat from beginning to end. Deliciously planted and leaded by the magnificent performances of Eduardo Arroyuelo (Claudio Caballero)Jaime Camil (Tony Zamacona) and Martha Higareda(Gloria) and with the awesome musical background provided by the megabands "U2" and " LA LEY" the plot will TEACH you the 101's on how Artistic business can get done. This movie promises to become a classic. Two thumbs up!

Argggg...
David-M9 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Why? That's just the question, why somebody gave this people the money to shoot this "film"? Why U2 let them use their music? Why someone actually believes that Jaime Camil could be an actor? Why does this piece of **** exists??... There is a wave in Mexican cinema. They are shooting easy going plots to raise money. But they have two problems: one, the stories are simply awful, and therefore they are wasting some great stories about our country, plots that are waiting to be told...Siete Días is probably one of the worse movies of all time...and nobody seems to notice that... Why? i have no idea...i just want to go to a movie theatre in my country and watch good stories, about our cities, our towns, our people. There are exceptions, of course, but in general, we are wasting the opportunity to tell the great story of actual Mexico... What a Shame...Shame on Fernando Kalife, Shame on the Producers...

This is the immediate future of cinema!!
chimbonbori28 November 2006
Think about this; if great movies this days are global, simple, and make you feel different. No wonder why this one won in his natal Mejico best film this year! It's been in just 3 us film festivals and already won the San Antono film festival.

This is a little something you have to see. No violence, no sex, just a simple story that gets you out of the theater for the second time thinking how they did all this with so little. My bet... a good heart & big pair of balls.

I'm still thinking; How the hell this guys got the U2 rights of their images, and music in such a small film? The actors; "Tony" (Jaime Camil) is not only hilarious but deep. And the other dude "Claudio" (Eduardo Arroyuelo) if you think that less in better, you got to see an actor that in his first movie in a leading role already understands what acting in 2006 is all about... ..."simplicity" something that took people like Juliette Binoche, Tony Leung Ka Fai or great masters like Michael Caine years to learn.

Believe me you are going to hear a lot about this one.

Kings of stupidity
perro22 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Awful, horrible, stupid movie. The main question here is why this guys got up from their beds and got into making a film that is actually made for retarded people. With all respect to the retarded, who cares about this rich superficial and mediocre people, why would anybody will enjoy seeing this? People who support this movies are completely out of touch with their brains and probably their hearts. I would say to anybody who is thinking of watching this film. Don't! this film is made by stupid rich people who in no way represent this country. Welthy individuals who tough it was a cool idea to make a film about the way rich people spent their stupid life. Another good reason for the revolution.

Best movie I've seen in months!!!!!!!
carolinebrownmonterey18 December 2006
I just Saw "7 Dias"(7 Days) for the second time and me and my friends just loved it. What is going on with Mexican cinema this days? Gonzales Inarritu, Cuaron, Del Toro, Monteverde, and now this little gem.

The movie grabs you so fast in the beginning that half way in it, I didn't realized that I was also reading sub-tittles. (It seems that sub-tittles is the new trend, ha?)

The story is as simple as an underdog rock promoter that wants to get out of mediocrity and comes up with the idea of taking to a small city in northern Mexico "U2", the biggest band on earth. (But this is Mexico remember not the "staples center".)

That Is the tip of the iceberg in a story that really is about life or dead decisions, friendship, and most important growing up ( Even harder in a country that opportunities are not the everyday commodity.) And this is a comedy!!! ....And you laugh!!! ...How cool is that?

Don't expect to see a lot of "U2", because the band is just an excuse for the story. Not the movie by itself. But everything is so well done that becomes a wonderful and delightful experience. The photography, the art,the locations, are very interesting and peculiar. The score and the music is so moving that I even got the soundtrack from amazon.

The actors are great!!!! A multilayered middle class hero "Claudio caballero", is incredibly played by Eduardo Arroyuelo, who is sooooooooooooo hot! that no doubt he is the new Antonio Banderas, being a blend between Antonio, Johnny Depp and Orlando bloom, (if you can picture that!) Eduardo is the star in the movie and it's amazing how subtle and elegant he plays the character, blowing me away in the end where ( wins or not, I'm not telling you, and doesn't matter) he as an actor makes the most amazing choice revealing an universal truth about success, "The world changes, you don't".

The other character "Tony" played by Jaime Camil (An other hottie!!) takes the comedic relief by showing the other face of the coin of a Mexican mafia member, as well as being the perfect sidekick for Arroyuelo. They both together work and look great!!!

I can't wait to see it again, this is the type of movie that is worth my dollars and my minutes... If Mexicans are doing these I'll stick to the Mexicans!!! Or if I have to be patriotic and wait and see the Hollywood remake; God! please just tell them to keep Eduardo!!!!!!!

This is not a bad movie. Its an AWFUL movie.
embolicat12 April 2010
Predictable, full of clichés and horrible jokes.

This movie was made just to lure U2 into coming back to México. And they bit, that's the worst part of the story.

A guy bets the lifetime savings from his girlfriend's parents (who, of course, can access her parents account without any warning) and bets it on an underground betting game in order to make money to bring U2 to Mexico.

As expected, he loses the game and gets in trouble. Thank God the mafia don loves U2 and, lo and behold, the kid has 7 days to convince not only other investors, but the band's manager to play a gig in Mexico. Piece of cake.

Incredibly badly written, even worst acting (specially from Camil who can't act to save his life) and the rest is a poor excuse for a movie. U2 fans who were attracted to this filth because they were told the band would appear in the movie, only get bad footage from the Vertigo tour tried to be synchronized with a song, which just doesn't happen.

I think there should be fines for people who make movies this bad.

A Good Movie
viperwolf12 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
**** this contain some spoiler about argument*** I couldn't say that is a Oscar winning movie but I liked, th story is simple like life in the bottom that's the message of the movie, life is simple do what you have to do, Claudio Caballero finds himself in a pretty fat trouble, only to probe that he could do a big concert like his older brother used to organize.

In the process he will meet Tony Zamacona son of a local gangster which he makes a bet on a soccer game, when Claudio loose the bet Tony's father gives him 7 Days to get the money... But when Tony knows Claudios plan about bring to Monterrey a Concert Date of U2's Vertigo Tour Tony convince his father for support him but the deadline stills the same 7 days money, concert or Claudio's life.

Tony will show Claudio the true meaning about CARPE DIEM in his own point of view, Tony is a young man whom has three laws in his life, have a great meal (20 or more Tacos) Have a great sex with his girlfriend (sex is the best exercise in world) and finally make a big fat s**t. And above all this exists his devotion to the biggest band of world (U2).

So this two forced friends became the best friends.

The movie has a good soundtrack, the photography is cool with some strange view angles but it helps to tell the story.

But I must insist the movie is simple Life is too.
