Aussie horror The Babadook, which is currently in UK cinemas and reaches the Us next week, is one of the scariest films of the year. Like a lot of the best fear-flicks, much of its ability to terrify comes down to one truly creepy kid.
In director Jennifer Kent's harrowing debut, six-year-old Samuel (Noah Wiseman) discovers a book called Mister Babadook, which just so happens to coincide with creepy occurrences at home that his mother (Essie Davis) blames on Samuel's overactive imagination. If we reveal any more, we'll ruin the film's surprises, but suffice to say that Samuel's behaviour is every bit as unnerving as the monster that could be lurking in his house.
He's not the only movie kid putting us off parenthood for life. Also responsible for giving Digital Spy a severe case of paedophobia (or fear of children) are these terrifying tots...

The delights of genre cinema are born from human imagination. The stories are nurtured by individuals who optimistically hope and believe across the years of their lives that a single film will devour that their tales arrive at the intended destination – to discover and touch the sensibilities of the audience.
If films are born out of the imagination then so the same could be said for the festivals that showcase them – festivals such as FrightFest that are crafted according to an ethos shared by four men who genre cinema continues to owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude – “‘Run by fans for the fans”, to find those great new voices in genre and see what difference they can make, and to ensure the FrightFest spirit of community endures.
But those who champion and showcase films, supporting their endeavours to find an audience on their ongoing journey from the intimate confines of its maker’s world,...

It's been several months since last we heard anything about Barry J. Gillis' disturbing feature film The Killing Games, but now word has arrived that Typhoon Films is releasing it worldwide on VOD in just a few days.
From the Press Release:
Typhoon Films has announced that The Killing Games will be released worldwide on Apple iTunes, Google Play, and other outlets on April 22, 2014.
The controversial film had its World Premiere at the Calgary International Film Festival and its Us Premiere in San Francisco at Another Hole in the Head Film Festival. Its last stop on the circuit was at Shock Stock Horror Convention in London, Ontario, last weekend.
The Killing Games ran into its first hurdle when the Edmonton International Film Festival Chairman told director Barry J. Gillis that the movie was too violent for their festival. Gillis battled with the fest to screen the movie but to no avail.

Wild Bunch Distribution awaits first figures to see whether controversy has impacted film’s performance at the box office.
Filmmaker Abdellatif Kechiche may have declared he didn’t want Adèle: Chapter 1 & 2 to be released after a public bust-up with its co-stars over his directing techniques but it has been business as usual for the film’s French distributor Wild Bunch Distribution (Wbd).
The Palme d’Or-winning picture, also known as Blue is the Warmest Colour, opens on 300 screens across France tomorrow [Oct 9].
“We expect the film to seduce a wide audience in spite of its length (179 minutes) and it’s 12-certificate. Wherever it has played it has been hailed as a masterpiece. We’re aiming for at least 800,000 admissions,” Wbd chief Thierry Lacaze told ScreenDaily.
“The Palme d’Or put Adèle: Chapter 1 & 2 in a category apart in French cinema which also includes Under the Son of Satan, A Man and a Woman, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and most...

Earlier this week, Entertainment Weekly brought to light the fact that the writers of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." have an unwritten rule when penning episodes: all super-powers introduced on the show must be explained by science — not magic or supernatural forces. With this in mind, it's no wonder that two more S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists have been added to the series' cast of recurring characters.
Joining David Conrad in the S.H.I.E.L.D. science department will be none other than Ian Hart ("Bates Motel," "Luck") in a role that has yet to be specified. While this casting news makes total sense, given the "S.H.I.E.L.D." writers' unwritten rule, we here at Splash Page can't help but long for the magic and mysticism of the Marvel universe—a mysticism that is still welcome on the big screen in films like "Thor: The Dark World.

In honor of the release of Christopher Golden's Joe Golem and the Drowning City in limited edition hardcover on October 3 and Baltimore: The Play, his collaboration with Mike Mignola, on November 21, Dark Horse editor Scott Allie interviewed the award-winning author for us.
Topics covered in the interview include Golden's interpretation of the term "dark fantasy," his upcoming project with True Blood author Charlaine Harris, vampires in our current culture, his influences, the scariest thing he's written, and Lots more. Check it out below, and look for more guest blogs from Scott Allie over the coming weeks.
Scott Allie: Can you explain “dark fantasy” to me?
Christopher Golden: The easy approach would be to say it's a merger of horror and fantasy, but that's not always true. For me, dark fantasy is fantasy in which nasty things happen. For people who've read my original novels, dark fantasy would be easy to recognize.

When recently asked his opinions on "formidable directors," such as Christopher Nolan, moving into superhero movie territory, David Cronenberg was quick to express his lack of interest in the genre as a whole. "I think it's still Batman running around in a stupid cape," the "Cosmopolis" director stated on the subject. "I just don't think it's elevated."
Cronenberg is perhaps best known for the sci-fi and horror films that he made early in his career, i.e. "The Fly," "Videodrome," and "Scanners." It's no wonder that he can see the art in a horror movie, but not in a superhero movie. However, what Cronenberg fails to realize is that there's a wide array of "heroes" in the superhero genre; some of them even stemming from horror and/or sci-fi concepts.
With that said, we've taken the liberty of compiling a list of five superhero properties that would be perfect for David Cronenberg.

It’s that time again… okay, it’s a little past that normal time, thanks to the Mix March Madness wrapup, but here are the preview materials for DC Comics releases for July 2012.
What’s on tap this month? More of the Before Watchmen books, with the debut of Ozymandias from Len Wein and Jae Lee, the conclusion of the Court of Owls storyline and crossover in all the Bat-books, and the debut of the done-in-one book, National Comics, featuring the New 52 Debut (coming right at you) of Eternity.
And in the white elephant of desire category, there’s the $300 statue showing the climactic scene from The Dark Knight Returns.
Once more, into the breach? Banzai!
As always, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

Supernatural fans are in for a treat with the spring publication of Supernatural: John Winchester’S Journal (It Books), a trade paperback companion book to the hit CW TV series. Written by Alex Irvine (author of a previous Supernatural tie-in), John Winchester’S Journal takes us through Sam and Dean’s rocky childhoods, ending with their father’s disappearance—the starting point of Supernatural’s pilot episode. The illustrated paperback reveals such tidbits as: John’s single-minded pursuit of a growing and deadly evil; John’s notes on everything from shapeshifters to Samuel Colt’s demon-halting pistol; the exorcism Sam and Dean used in “Phantom Traveler”; Dean’s first hunt; Sam’s peewee soccer team (!) and much more. Fango spoke with Irvine about John Winchester’S Journal and his love of the show. The author of seven novels, Irvine has also written two collections of short stories and a Marvel Comics series,...

The talking heads in our tweet feed held nothing back last night. The Dungeons & Dragons episode of "Community" that was on attracted some commentary, but there was plenty of stuff going on off of TV screens as well.

This week sees a ton of genre movies coming out on DVD and Blu- Ray. The biggest being Predators, followed up by the remake of the cult classic Night of the Demons, a sequel to Mirrors, and Anniversary editions for Rocky Horror Picture Show and Psycho. Add to that a slew of indie and classic horror and there is a lot to choose from.
Predators
Directed by Nimród Antal

The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.
Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

Find out if you agree after the jump where you'll also see who's working on a new Transformers book and what Fred Van Lente noticed about the CIA's website.

Prop 8 pt. 1: @ronmarz Hope all these "get gov't out of my life!" conservatives are happy now that Calif. gov't no longer tells people who they can/can't marry.

It turns out that at least a few comics creators out there like watching TV programming about sharks — Jonathan Hickman and Steve Rolston, for instance, both tuned in to Discovery's Shark Week and provided tweet commentary last night.
Elsewhere, 2010's two big comic book movie directors Jon Favreau and Edgar Wright were logged in with Favreau continuing to document his exploits on the "Cowboys and Aliens" set and Wright evaluating a kiss he received while promoting "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." Find out what they had to say after the jump along with some biting words from Erik Larsen about Neil Gaiman's lawsuit against Todd McFarlane over the rights to some Dark Ages Spawn characters.

Shark Week pt. 1: @JHickman These guys on Shark week are insane. I really hope they don't have kids and stuff... I guess stuff means wives.

News that a new edition of Scrabble will legalize proper nouns caught many purists and writers off guard, and the comics community was not unaffected. Alex Irvine, for one, plans on sticking with tradition.
Elsewhere, Tim Seeley revealed one of his favorite actresses to headline a "Hack/Slash" movie. If you've seen "Warehouse 13," you'll what he's talking about. "Adventures of Dr. McNinja" creator Chris Hastings also got a surprise last night for a reported appearance by an image he made on "The Colbert Report." Check out his reaction along with James Robinson's favorite Lantern ring color and Christos Gage on whether Harvard or Marvel Comics is harder to get into.
It's all in the Twitter Report for April 7, 2010.
@alexirvine I will not be using proper nouns in my games of Scrabble, no matter what depravity Mattel approves.

Original "Mission: Impossible" star and "Airplane!" actor Peter Graves passed away Sunday, and he was beloved by comics and comics/movies tweeters alike. Edgar Wright, Alex Irvine and Jeff Katz, among others, poured out some posts to the first Jim Phelps.
In other chatter, you may be interested to know that not all of the Emerald City ComiCon action took place in Seattle. Though it sounds like an epic "Rock Band" competition was held by Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, Brian Michael Bendis and Wil Wheaton, the convention was followed by some Voodoo Donut action in Portland. Check out who hit the place up after the jump along with iPad expectations from Jim Lee and Mitch Breiweiser and some micro-reviews of "The Pacific" on HBO.

If you ever doubted whether or not "Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers" was in continuity with the rest of the Marvel Universe, Chris Eliopoulos set the record straight today. I didn't know that this was a major issue of contention for the book's readers, but apparently enough of them asked.
Brian Michael Bendis also engaged his readership while experimenting with some text-to-audio software with David Mack last night. You can find out more about that below. Click onward past the jump and you'll also find out who's mourning the reported disappearance of James Brown's body, what Microsoft Word does with the word "Halfing" and which conventions Ben Templesmith plans on attending this year.
It's all in the Twitter Report for March 12th, 2010.
@eliopoulos No, I'm saying Pet Avengers Is in continuity, but some folks insist on saying it isn't. There is no ambiguity in this story.

Last night I dusted off an old DVD of mine called Death Scenes. This documentary explored the photo scrapbook (“a catalog of horrid indiscretions”) of a police officer who pounded the beat of Depression-era Los Angeles. The grisly slideshow of crime scenes unfolds under the baleful narration of one Anton Szandor Lavey (1930-1997), head of the Church of Satan and, as it happened, close pal of Forry Ackerman.
Lavey was one of the subjects Forry and I discussed when we first met in Pennsylvania. The two men, more alike than it would at first seem, fostered a relationship of mutual respect. As Forry himself put it in his dictation to me:
“Although Anton Szandor Lavey by his own declaration was something like a Son of Satan and was known to hold Black Masses, when my wife and I knew him we didn’t find a mean bone in his body.
