Surprisingly better than most Sci-Fi originals
gtc8312 March 2006
Years ago, the people grew so greedy and hedonistic that they were no longer satisfied with worshiping a mythical god, so the Queen had sex with a bull and produced the Minotaur. Didn't turn out so good, a few deaths were involved, and the creature was placed in a labyrinth beneath the palace. Now every third year eight people are cast into the labyrinth as a sacrifice.

This had surprisingly high production values for a Sci-Fi original. All the sets were quite nicely done, and even the Minotaur looked very good. On the bad side, the characters just didn't have much character, nor screen presence, and it got pretty boring towards the middle. The worst part was that, when trapped in a series of caves with a killer critter, what would a person do? Perhaps be quiet so as not to attract the attention of the beast? Not these folks. The main character especially seems almost incapable of grasping the situation; He yells at the top of his lungs on numerous occasions. Once, the Minotaur is only a few feet away and the guy still can't shut up. He's also convinced that his girlfriend, who was sacrificed three years earlier, might still be alive somehow. I couldn't quite figure out how anyone could be so dumb as to believe such a thing. There's also a woman who screams a lot - not just a regular scream, but a long, long scream. Maybe ten seconds in duration. That's a real joy to listen to.

Two of the more entertaining characters are the high priest and priestess who are in charge of the kingdom. The priest likes smoking from a bull skull, and wants to get it on with the priestess. Seeing that she's his sister, she's rather cool on the idea, and jumps into the labyrinth as well. She's about the only interesting person down there. And one of the few people who speaks in such a manner that you can understand her. I missed a lot of mumbled dialog in this movie, but I don't think it served much purpose anyway.

Overall, I think the Sci-Fi Channel may be getting a little better at movie making (they've certainly had enough practice). This one was almost good.

Nothing brilliant but surprisingly one of SyFy's more tolerable movies
TheLittleSongbird18 May 2012
Minotaur was not a brilliant movie. And in all honesty, I wasn't expecting it to be, in fact considering SyFY'S reputation I was expecting much worse. There are problems, but to my surprise Minotaur was one of SyFy's more tolerable movies. The film surprisingly looks great, unlike other SyFy movies you can actually see and somewhat understand what's going on, the photography is not too slipshod, a decent job is done to make the setting believable and the scenery is really quite stunning. The music is another improvement, not forgettable or sluggish but often well-orchestrated with a couple of rousing moments. The main female character is also beautiful and doesn't fall into the trap of being too vapid, and while I think Tom Hardy knew the script was bad and overdid it sometimes there is an element of charisma about it that has been sorely lacking in other fantasy/adventure SyFy movies. The minotaur is rather unconvincing, with the quality coming across as choppy computer-game-ish, but I have seen far worse effects before. Besides the minotaur is quite menacing, again another improvement on other SyFy monsters. Minotaur also has a lot of faults, starting with the insipid dialogue and clichéd and personality-less(generally) characters and ending with a rather predictable and at times ridiculous story that takes time to get going in some of the cave/labyrinth sequences and Tony Todd(who was so brilliant in Candyman) overacting embarrassingly, like Danny Glover in Age of the Dragons and (I know this next example isn't SyFy but still) Jeremy Irons in Dungeons & Dragons he chews the scenery to pieces. Overall, not a brilliant movie and has a lot wrong with it but tolerable, compared to other things that SyFy have done. 5/10 Bethany Cox

Interesting Interpretation of the Mythological Creature
ennuidoll12 March 2006
I watched this movie expecting to be disappointed and bored to tears, but I was actually quite entertained.

The writers use the legendary Minotaur to create a new mythology around the beast for this film. The monster is created by a people who worship the bull and wished to have a living god. Interestingly, they chose to make the Minotaur white, no doubt to give props to the original myth.

The plot is fairly predictable, but with enough surprises and suspenseful moments to keep it interesting. The characters stay true to being primitive, ancient people. They are simple and their reactions are less than logical, but many horror movies have been built on bad reactions to scary things. The characters lack depth, but I don't think it's inappropriate considering the nature of the film.

The Minotaur itself is well put together. The effects are simple, but not bad. As I was watching I wasn't thinking about how poorly done the effects were or how much better they could've been. In other words, the effects didn't detract from the film without being devoid of effects--a rare thing in movies of this caliber.

The movie begins with an overview of the mythology for the film and sets up the plot very quickly. The rest of the movie takes place in the labyrinth and the palace above it where we encounter bizarre hedonists in a brother/sister prince and princess combo.

The movie is not terrible, nor spectacular. All in all, it was a treat for me to see someone use the Minotaur in a film.

SyFy silliness
NateWatchesCoolMovies8 April 2017
If you ever find yourself in conversation with Tom Hardy at some cocktail party (one can dream), Minotaur is the film you bring up to both flabbergast and embarrass him, if only for your own amusement. It's one of those low budget sword & sorcery schlock-fests that the SyFy channel used to broadcast at two in the morning on sleepy Saturday nights, to serve as background noise for whatever hedonistic shenanigans are going on in the living room. It's Tom's first ever starring role, and therefore should never be forgotten, like those old camcorder tapes of kids learning to ride sans training wheels for the first time. The story borrows from the legend, adding its own lurid, t&a soaked flair that only SyFy can get just right. Tom plays the son of a Viking chieftain (a brief Rutger Hauer), who goes looking for his true love, one among a few of the village's youngsters who get kidnapped every year by a freaky pseudo African tribe of weirdos who sacrifice youths to the mythical Minotaur, residing in rocky catacombs beneath their city's surface. Led by supreme weirdo Deucalion (Candyman's Tony Todd, hamming up every scene), who fervently wants to impregnate his own hot sister (chill, dude), and oversees this theatrical occult ritual with obscene relish. This is one of those creature features where you barely see the beast for the first two thirds of the film, save for a quick snaggle of fur or fang rushing by in the shadows, and suspiciously looking like a bearskin rug cello taped to antlers and a hobby horse. Hardy does get an eventual confrontation with the Minotaur late in the game and deep in the maze, providing a few schlocky moments that are worth the ride, but it's silly stuff most of the time, scraping the bottom of a barrel that does lower than the maze of the bull. Totally tagging Tom in thee blog post though in hopes that he sees this and it brightens his day just a bit.

Don't be fooled, it's JAPMTVM...
innocuous11 March 2006
Just Another Poorly Made TV Movie.

A combination of poor script, minimal SFX, and wild over-acting by Todd and company make this a pretty sad take on the well-known myth. Corn syrup blood spews and there's a lot of noise. That's about it.

I did derive a bit of pleasure from trying to sort out all the different influences on Todd's portrayal of the "psycho" potentate. It's Frank Booth ("Blue Velvet") meets Thulsa Doom ("Conan the Barbarian"), with a bit of Jabba the Hutt thrown in for good measure. Until you've seen someone taking a "hit" off a cattle skull, you haven't seen good cinema.

There's some vague hope that things will pick up, until the victims are tossed into the labyrinth. From that point forward, it's a complete waste of time...typical monster-in-a-cave fare. You could probably make a drinking game out of it, though...everyone slams a shot whenever a foam rubber rock moves.

Save your time and rent "Jason and the Golden Fleece" or some other film that is at least a little entertaining.

Not my Crete
lastliberal24 March 2007
I lived on Crete for two years so I am familiar with the story of the Minotaur and the Labyrynth. They took that story and made some monster flick about how one dude (Tom Hardy from Layer Cake) found out his girlfriend was still alive in the maze and he set out to save her and the village. I do have to say I was most impressed with th Temple and the blood-drinking leader. I was even more impressed with Queen Raphaella - Michelle Van Der Water.

Was it a complete waste? No, the special effects were good, the monster was ghastly, and the action was what you would expect from a sci-fi film. Again, worth a look for Michelle Van Der Water.

Silly and insulting
atreidis28 December 2006
There are definitely some people who hate Greek Mythology. The proof lies in "Minotaur" movie.

They took the story of Minotaur from the Greek Myth and they distorted so badly ending up with this awful movie.

It is supposed to chance things cause you want to improve something not to make it worst.

The original story of Minotaur based on symbolism is full of meaning. The story of this movie has nothing to tell. Absolutely not enjoyable. Like somebody else said... they butcher the mythology of the Minotaur story to make this. It's silly and insulting.

Minotaur - never ever again
clickvd20 September 2007
Minotaur - the word itself explains most of the entire movie.

As it happened, my girlfriend bought the DVD-release at a local rental-store (used DVD), and thought it would be a good one. Sure, it has a good looking cover-art, and a nice fancy title/logo, but the rest just lacks content.

The introduction and start of the movie makes it feel like at least a partly good one, though during its continuation, it clearly shines through as what it really is: A piece of utter wasted time and money.

Do not buy or watch this movie, it's so bad you sit there thinking if you should have done the dishes or mopped the floor instead - as that would really give more excitement than this flop.

To sum it up: if one could give a movie a dice-throw instead of the 1-10 rating, I would not even have thrown the dice.

Oh, good thing about the DVD-buy on our side: We got a spare DVD-cover for something else - a bit expensive perhaps...

Ch-ch-changes? You don't change myth to suit your flick.
lordzedd-318 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
What's wrong with these people? These movie makers, they think they can be creative and change myth and classic cartoons to suit their "vision". Where there vision is blurry and need glasses. If you want to be creative, then write something new, you don't go around messing with classic Greek stories. The minotaur is part man and part bull. Which mean he walks on two feet and has hands. What happened to his eyes? There was a flashback when the minotaur was born and he had eyes. Just because something or someone goes blind from decades in total darkness doesn't mean his eyes fall out and where is his lips? Is this Minotaur alive or some kind of Zombull? The acting and story works, but the whole minotaur thing truly destroys the experience for me. One, fur on flesh, two walks up right and three has lips and eyes. The changes totally ruin this movie and I feel anyone who knows the slightest bit of Greek myth will feel the same, it's quite obvious the makers knew nothing of Greek Myth or of Minotaurs. So I give this awful piece of crap the NOOSE!

Cheap, annoying, stupid.
Caribbean_Smurf24 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is absolutely not enjoyable. When I read the DVD cover, it said: from the makers of ''Lord of the Rings'' and ''The Mummy''. Idiot that I was, I actually believed it. They probably hired one of the Orc extra's from LOTR to be able to put that on the cover or something.

The movie starts out promising enough, some sort of mythological mumbo-jumbo story about an evil empire that worships the Minotaur. What's this? Full frontal nudity already? They don't waste time, do they.

And the the movie starts. Very slowly. We meet some stupid kids who are on their way to be sacrificed. Some guy, high on drugs, uses his magic skull to get the women high. They proceed to tongue kiss his sister, and each other, passionately.

Ummmmm. OK. What exactly was the point of that? Yes, exactly, to give the viewer a boner.

Almost immediately after that, the sister seduces our hero and gets him into bed.

Yeah.

And then I turned off the DVD-player and went on to do something else. This movie is boring, uses cheap tactics to try and keep the viewers attention... it's silly and insulting. They butcher the mythology of the Minotaur story to make this... like somebody else said, it reminds me of a bad Stargate episode.

Do not watch this film unless you are drunk, horny (pun intended) or enjoy watching bad movies.

" In the lair of the Minotaur, many go in, but no one survives the Beast "
thinker16911 May 2014
The legend of the Minotaur originated in antiquity when first related by the great storyteller Homer. Now in modern times several movies have been created and I've seen five. From among them all, this is the very best. The director is Jonathan English, with writers nick green and Stephan McDool. The tale is retold here and it tells of a peoples who lined the Mediterranean and fell under the tyrannical power of King Minos, who was cursed When he offended the Gods and who in return was punished by them. He had asked for a son, but was instead given one who fed on Human flesh. Each year, the king sent his warships throughout the land and forced his vassals to give him tribute in the form of young boys and young girls to be fed to his son the Minotaur. However, Theseus, the half-son of Zues volunteered to be among the victims and offers himself to the group to be sacrificed. Unlike others stories where the King's daughter fell in love with the heroic youth, this version is flagrantly dark and there is much violence, blood and gore to satisfy action oriented audiences. The film is more violent than others, but it's necessary to meet the requirements of advance theater goers. The star of this film is handsome, Tom Hardy who plays Theo or Thesus. Tony Todd is Deucalion the tyrant king who plays it to the hilt. Other cast members include Lex Shrapnel, Jonathan Readwin and Rutger Hauer as Cyrnan. There is a great deal of violence as I said, but it goes hand in hand with fiery, dark caverns, the amazing Minotaur and especially the explosive finally. Take it from me, this version will become a Classic and thus I recommend it enthusiastically to one and all. ****

Pleasant Diversion
bobwildhorror5 January 2008
Welcome to the CITIZEN KANE of Sci-Fi Channel movies. Not that MINOTAUR is faultless. It's just competent on so many more levels than your average Sci Fi-Schlock Fest that it appears great in comparison.

We have some actual acting going on. Granted, there is some great scenery chewing, but it's on a grand scale. There are some good effects. There are some epic looking landscapes and the occasional set. And the script and direction are actually acceptable.

On the down side, there's the same CGI overkill that seems to haunt every Sci Fi monster flick. Thankfully, this is kept to a minimum. We're also stuck in the same labyrinth/cave sets for way too long. And every so often I couldn't help feeling that plot points were being cribbed from a Terry Jones film.

But these are minor quibbles. There's some attempt here to breathe life into the monster on the loose genre. Not bad at all.

Why is this a movie?
buzzerbill24 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Let me start out by saying that (a) I like the SciFi channel, and fantasy and scifi in general (those reading my other reviews might conclude that I only like French and Japanese films, and that is not the case) and (b) I do not have any bias against TV movies.

What I do have a bias against is flimsy and witless hack job rearrangements of classics--including classic myth. There is a point of view that every possible genre of literature was invented by the Greeks and we have just been ringing changes ever since; so there in nothing wrong with re-imagining the classics--Jean Cocteau's films, "Clueless" on Jane Austen, John Gardner's "Grendell", Kurosawa's "Ran" and "Throne of Blood", much of Roger Corman's work, and numerous others.

But in this case, bad dialogue, bad acting (this film makes, say, "Conan the Barbarian" look like the Royal Shakespeare Company) and a plot that, charitably, has little to do with the original and everything to do with being a framework for skimpy clothing and a bucket or two of gore, matched with an excessive enthusiasm for point of view camera work, all combine to make this a heap of (as a good friend of mine says) stinking poo.

Go watch either Conan movie, or "Red Sonia", or "Hellboy" or a Hammer film. Don't waste your time and effort on this. Guys--recognize a stinker when you see one.

Not too bad for the SciFi channel
Tosoiba16 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the SciFi channels better offerings (although that isn't saying much). However, any resemblance between this movie and the mythology of the Minotaur is purely coincidental. The size of Athens's yearly tribute is wrong. The size of Athens is wrong. The hero's name is wrong (Theseus, not Theo). The gal who helped Theseus was Ariadne, daughter of King Minos and not sister to the high priest. Ariadne gave Theseus a sword to kill the Minotaur and ball of string to mark his way out of the labyrinth. None of Thesus's companions were killed and he took Ariadne when he left, etc ad nauseum.

But if you are not a purest and don't mind the "literary license" it wasn't too bad. The story line was better than usual, the special effects weren't too bad considering the limited amount of money spent, and character development was about the same as usual.

Perverse, incorrect, stupid
allfadervise22 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Perverse, the movie was perverse with the strange "exotic" nasty clothes they wore, the lesbian kiss? WTF!? In ancient Greece?

Incorrect: Wikipedia quote: "at nine-year intervals, seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian girls were to be sent to Crete to be devoured by the Minotaur" The movie states 8 "youngsters" every third year. How come the village has been raided 5 times already, and the movie states: northern territory, foolish plot! Marriage between sister and brother is a ancient Egyptian tradition. Sub Saharan African actors as Minoans? WTF? How stupid can you be? Whats next? Far East Asian Vikings? North American natives as Samurais? Eskimos acting Zulu warriors? Caucasians in Apocalypto 2? Hey Mel lets make all the natives blond and blue eyed, thats the REAL story! The Minotaur is supposed to be a man with a head tail of a bull (sometimes with the hooves/hid legs of one as well). And what is that creature supposed to be a minotaur? A gigantic rat with horns and hooves? Just looks stupid.

Stupid: All the running around the maze screaming each others names and the monster actually being able to sneak up to them with all its noisy breathing and running. Sniffing "gas" out of a goat skull, some kind of joke? What kind of helmets do they have? Haha, looks like something they robbed from Sauron in LOTR.

Horrible, stupid movie, I believe it's one of the worst I've ever seen. I give it 2/10 because it had quite nice looking actresses.

It's not hard to make a good movie out of a myth, how can you rape it so bad? This is not good, nor to learn history nor myth, as someone wrote.

I'm a real fun of mythology from wherever part of the world, Grece, Italy, Norway, etc, whatever kind of movie of this genre I see and I play PC-games too, such as Age of mythology or Titans. When "Minotaur" started, the woman's words at the beginning made me feel eager for a interesting movie, but minute by minute, that excitement was going down. I waited for something better, the effects didn't like me too much, especially when the beast was running, the plot was weak. I think that this kind of movie should have a good argument, may be from the real myth, and good special effects for being a nice film where you, furthermore you enjoy the movie, learn about Mythology. Really a so so movie.

How desperate can you get
black_wolf_197030 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had no redeeming factors except it well killed a boring afternoon. The Minotaur looked silly more like a sick milk cow with a over bite. The acting was flat no feeling even when Todd's character tried to seduce his sister, sick and really had nothing to do with the movie. The"HERO" Theo acted more lick a spoiled brat and by the end you were hoping he would be eaten. The "MUTE" girl was the only one I was glad survived to the end. Plus the adaption of the myth behind this movie was badly done. Lots of blood splatters I will give that but if you have $5 to rent a movie by-pass this one unless you are really bored.

Direct-to-video/DVD
kosmasp27 April 2007
If this were the 80's this movie would've been released directly to video. Now it should be DVD. If you have too much time and you're into b-movies, than you might like this. Although if you really have too much time, why not watching a good movie instead?

We all have different tastes, so some people might actually like this. But the majority won't and the(ir) reasons will be the following ones: bad acting, bad script and not really the highest production values. Of course the latter is understandable, it's a low budget movie. There is nothing really good about this movie and even a Tony Todd can't save it. But since I have seen worse pictures (at least you can see they're trying here and my b-movie fable might also play a role), I gave it 3 stars!

I have come to expect better from Sci Fi
pops-64 April 2006
Other than not being remotely related to the actual mythology, having absolutely awful dialog and worse readings and being a collaborative effort of six countries, it wasn't too bad.

Characters die after being gored (and lots of gore, at that). The plot dies after being bored. No, wait.

Actually, my wife and I both like Sci Fi, are fans of Stargate (in both incarnations) and Battlestar. We like those. We hated this. Complete waste of TiVo space.

Think early Godzilla meets late Cujo for the beast effects. Think lots of syrup for blood and gore. Think Grand Canyon for plot holes. This would make a great movie for Mystery Science Theater.

This is actually one of the better SciFi original movies.
bluemagus18 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I've got a bit of history with the SciFi original movies, I used to watch them all the time whenever there was absolutely nothing on TV, and nine times out of ten that was the case. But I saw previews for this movie and said to myself "that looks interesting, I think I'll watch it." I think the SciFi channel(now re-titled SyFy and they're constantly ridiculed for it)has a lot of problems with their original movies. Whenever they have to create an original idea, well you get stuff like Dark Relic, Riverworld, Ice Spiders etc.

But then there are movies like The Wraiths of Roanoke, which is pretty damn good if you ask me, Abominable, which I regard as one of the best Bigfoot movies ever even if the Monster looks goofy. Minotaur if you ask me is one of the HIGHLY superior original movies. It does move a little too fast in the beginning and it's not really all that intriguing but when you have Tony Todd play a villain things always get more interesting.

The characters in this movie are all likable to some extent, well okay maybe not the screamer girl but to her credit she does have a Lesbian scene for what it's worth. The story in this movie is a retelling of Thesius but done in the way a Monster movie is. That's kinda genius, sure I can talk all day about how the Minotaur from Greek Mythology doesn't look a thing like the one in the movie, in fact the movie Minotaur is more like a big ass bull with a skull face than anything, and he's supposed to be half man/half bull. But I can forgive that because the special effects the use for him are surprisingly top notch.

I don't know why it has such a low score on IMDb, I'm guessing it's more critics whining about what they think it should be or something, when you get to the bare bones of this movie(if you watch it that joke is actually kinda funny) is this. It's a monster movie version of Thesius, you really can't do any better than what we have here.

Good Entertainment
claudio_carvalho29 December 2006
In the age of gods and spirits, the world was ruled by a dark empire from a palace in the Island of Minus. The locals worshiped the Bull, and the ambitious queen got pregnant of their god, generating an offspring part human part bull. When the prince is killed in the island, the dwellers blame the villagers and they are sentenced to give eight young women per year to satisfy the Minotaur. The shepherd Theo (Tom Hardy), son of the village leader Cyrnan (Rutger Hauer), misses his girlfriend that was abducted a couple of years ago. When he meets a leper seer, she tells him that his beloved Ffion is alive, and that Theo must go to the island to kill the beast and save his love. Theo goes to the palace and faces the king Deucalion (Tony Todd) and the Minotaur, supported by Deucalion's sister, the queen Raphaella (Michelle Van Der Water), who discloses the truth about the Minotaur.

"Minotaur" is a good entertainment, and of course is not the story of the Greek mythology of Theseus, King Minos of Creta and the maze of the Minotaur. The story is reasonable, the special effects are good and the acting is average. In the end, I liked this movie. My vote is six.

Title (Brazil): "Minotauro" ("Minotaur")

Tries to be stylish, forgets to be a film
leveller0@yahoo.com25 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This is a film that is loosely derived from the Greek myth of Theseus. Here the hero Theo also goes to join a contingent of youths taken to be sacrificed to the minotaur. He is also helped by a woman - the consort of the evil Bad Guy. Bad Guy incidentally is a cross between Morpheus from The Matrix (and thinking about that, Theo is a bit like Neo) and the evil person in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Lastly it is set in some bygone classical age as well.

However it has a dark moody backdrop throughout, strange jarring cinematography, and alternating pseudo-philosophical dialogue and clichés. The characters are all trite and very annoying. It is amazing how dull the film is for the first 3/4. Even the labyrinth is not creepy, just a boring excursion looking for lost girlfriends, random vagabond dwellers, and exits. It does get slightly better once most people die though.

Better with age.
amesmonde7 March 2021
A loose retelling of the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.

With so many terrible bad films having been made over the last 15 years or so it's actually worth revisiting director Jonathan English offering. Not just because Tom Hardy has since become a star but it's one of the few Minotaur films out there, which is a shame given it's such a great myth.

It could be pacer and less would have been scarier for the monster design. The sets, costume and score are impressive and the cast features the likes of Tony Todd, (Hammer Horror legend) Ingrid Pitt and Blade Runner's Rutger Hauer.

It is average monster movie but it's certainly worth a look.

Not all that bad
QinetiQ23 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I watched it on TV tonight, and I must say I watched it till the end, which is pretty rare for me when it comes to watching special-effects movies on TV (since I watch most 'good' SE movies in the theater).

I didn't even mean to watch it, but I zapped passed it just when it started and bascily thats what kept me interested; the atmosphere, lighting etc was interesting. It starts of rather slow in my opinion, but it picks up speed half way through.

I think the title is a bit misleading since it doesn't involve the real minotaur, but a creature that people in the movie believe it is the minotaur. It's entertaining, surely not a top movie but still they managed to make it interesting using the various characters. The effects are OK for a movie with this budget, I never thought it was too fake. Some stuff did bother me, as example, the gas; He can smell the gas when he sticks his head in the hole. In the end he managed to light it, and it suddenly blows through the whole labyrinth, up to the pitholes in the palace. I am no chemist, but it doesn't make much sense why it would do that. The fire would just follow the gasstream, not create a massive stream on its own. If the gas was already streaming so badly, no one would be able to live in the palace.

Another thing that make me think, since the minotaur was actually just some strange monstrous bull, how could they been feeding it for centuries, or at least more than a human lifetime? Age affects every living being, even hideous bulls.

Other than that, it was entertaining, the casting was well done, the girls pretty, dialogs were OK, and effects pretty good for a lower budget movie.
