Poor Scince Fiction
lkanehl3 November 2005
"They Are Among Us" is poor science fiction at best. Mediocre acting bogs down this film. The plot holes are numerous. Aliens that somehow came to earth on a meteor and have been hiding among us for over 100 years, but need a plastic surgeon to make them appear human. In their alien form they supposedly have exo-skeletons (which is why they need the plastic surgery) but when you see them they have teeth and fingernails. The heroine's father "disappeared" after Project Blue Book closed, but was supposedly an F-16 pilot. And on and on. If you want to see an alien invasion movie, pick "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", and see how it is done right.

"When you have the gun you can ask the questions...' Average at best.
poolandrews2 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
They Are Among Us is set in the small American town of Point Ridge where your average American teenager Daniel (Michael DiLallo) lives at home with his mum Collette (Anne Apra) & dad Hugh (Bruce Boxleitner) & generally does what the teenage youth of America do. However Daniel's 18th birthday is fast approaching & his parents are acting strangely, they have always guarded a box & Daniel is interested what's inside so along with his mates Harlan (Michael maples) & Devon (Lacey Beeman) he steals the box & has a look inside where he finds some strange feeling paper with some unknown symbols on it. Daniel's parents continue to act odd & he is convinced something is going on, the three friends then meet a woman named Finley (Alison Eastwood) who claims that their town is in fact a colony of aliens who use the skills of crooked plastic surgeon Norbert (Corbin Bernsen) to help them retain a human appearance & that Daniel's mum is in fact one of these aliens. As you would expect the news that his mum is an alien comes as somewhat of a shock but after seeing proof he sets about putting an end to the aliens before they contaminate the whole Earth...

Co-produced & directed by Jeffrey Obrow I thought They Are Among Us was average at best. The script by Lars Hauglie takes itself extremely seriously & is badly structured. For the first 45 minutes They Are Among Us tries to be a mystery & build up to the shocking revelation that aliens are among us, unfortunately the narrative is poor & unlike any good mystery there is nothing within that opening 45 minutes to hold your interest to hook you or engage. Sure there's a couple of brief scenes with an alien in them but apart from that I found it both dull & forgettable. While watching They Are Among Us I was thinking that it could be some nightmarish mutant offspring of a cheap rejected episode of The X-Files (1993 - 2002), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (either the 1956 one or the 1978 remake) & Dawson's Creek (1998 - 2003). The character's are poor, the dialogue is poor & there's not one single surprise within the entire film while the ending leaves everything wide open & doesn't really resolve anything. Having said that it's reasonably well paced & might pass 100 odd minutes painlessly enough if your not too demanding. Oh, & one more thing for those that have seen it you'll know what I'm talking about but what the hell happened to the missing friend Langford (Garikayi Mutambirwa)? One minute he seemed vital to the plot & the next poof he's never seen, heard or mentioned again!

Director Obrow films like an episode from a TV show which comes as no surprise since it was made-for-TV. The whole thing looks flat, unadventurous & utterly forgettable. The special effects are few & far between, there's basically a couple of aliens & it's just some guy with sharp teeth & funny coloured skin while at the end for some reason that is never really explained there's big alien that appears from nowhere & then just disappears into thin air. Forget about any blood or gore as there isn't any. There's no tension or atmosphere & there's definitely no scares while the main villain is some old geezer with bad hair.

Technically They Are Among Us is reasonable, it's quite well made but it's all rather average. The acting wasn't great & I'm sure some of the cast were chosen for their looks rather than their acting skill of which they have little.

They Are Among Us is nothing special, it didn't do much for me although at least I watched it to the end with having to use the fast forward button on my remote. Not recommended.

One to avoid
youngsteve23 June 2013
The premise of this SF film sounds good, with a decent trailer that looks like a rip off of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Unfortunately if only that were true, as the film lacks any tension, makes little sense, and jumps all over the place, giving you no idea of what is actually happening. Average acting doesn't help, and Alison certainly needs some lessons from dad Clint, as her action hero role does not quite hold up.

The budget was obviously low, as the effects in it are quite poor, with some ridiculous creatures that look like rejects from a 1950's Z Movie. One to avoid I feel.

They are plot less
Bifrostedflake4 October 2005
My friends and I rented this from Blockbuster because we saw Nana Visitor's name on the box. This movie is a travesty I hope she negates from her CV.

The "plot" was lose and flaccid, the acting was mostly dry and unbearable in some parts. The movie made no sense whatsoever. The rough plot of an alien parasite species that infects humans has been done many times by films with much better scripts than this, for example, invasion of the body-snatchers and The faculty.

If you ever have the misfortune to come across this movie, I suggest you burn it.

How it classes itself as a horror movie when there was no use of fear, suspense, gore, terror or any of the usual horror film techniques I don't know, however if you still find yourself wanting to watch this film I suggest you have a lot of sugar before hand, so you can find parts of it funny.

Appalling. Just Awful...

Warning: Spoilers
Words fail me.

And that isn't common.

Done properly this could have been great, funny spoof B-movie sci-fi, but sadly, it was not to be. Rarely in the field of drama have so many competent actors struggled so vainly with such a dogs-breakfast of a script. I can only endorse the previous reviewer's comments - go clean the bathroom. In fact do ANYTHING except watch this film.

Positives: Lucy Beeman's nose. Negatives: Everything else.

Most apposite line: "This isn't going anywhere".

If only every plastic surgeon could meet with such a fate.

Cringingly bad attempt at teen horror, script is all over the place
pieterjandeboeck13 December 2004
I am only writing this out of utter shock that I rented this for almost 4 pounds. Because the story is supposedly similar in nature as 'the body snatchers' you might be tempted to give this a try, however: Its barely watchable. Most annoying of all is that the script is all over the place: you'll wonder why they are running back and forth. After a while you stop caring as the characters are so badly constructed, you hardly feel for them as they pointlessly run all over the place. Ending is sudden and leaves you none the wiser as to the supposed background story. As in any B-movie, bad casting as some characters have been blatantly chosen for their looks instead of their acting ability.

Clean the bathroom instead of watching this
m.p.18 July 2004
I am very tolerant of really bad sci/fi and horror movies - I've been watching them since I was 4 or 5, so I've seen some really bad stuff, but I deal with it. I've even watched a lot of SciFi Channel movies so I know not to expect much - a usually promising movie that has no ending to speak of. Hope springs eternal, I guess - or the triumph of hope over experience, as they say. Unfortunately, this is a dog right from the beginning and I knew it, but like a moth to the flame, I kept thinking something, anything, interesting would happen. It doesn't. All of the actors give a decent performance - given the script, I don't know how they all kept straight faces. It has something to do with collagen-starved worm parasite creatures who are slowly taking over the human race, one body at a time. There's an evil plastic surgeon who collaborates with the enemy by giving them the outward appearance of humans...don't worry, he gets what's coming to him. The slug people themselves don't really know where they came from, they think they might have thumbed a ride on a meteor that landed on earth, but...somehow they know about the members of slug royalty among them - the slug princess has managed to breed with a human being who knows that she's the worm queen and loves her for her self...oh, must I go on? Please, I implore you, do not waste 2 hours of your life watching this...anything would be better...think of the worst, least enjoyable way you can spend two hours...it would be better than this.

I can't believe how awful this movie turned out to be. I feel magnanimous even referring to it as a "movie". The acting was flat, the editing was terrible and the plot leaves many major questions unanswered. The premise was OK, if unoriginal: a small group of aliens is living in the US and trying to slowly take over humanity. But it goes rapidly downhill from there. How could they convince a "human" to accept an alien as his wife in order to make they alien-human hybrid they require? They show a larval alien but never show what it does. They have a plastic surgeon that can produce perfect looking skin on an industrial scale. They throw in the obligatory huge alien monster with teeth. The ending was almost too painful to watch. I suppose that I'm mostly disappointed that Bruce Boxlietner would have anything to do with this. How could he say to the huge alien monster with teeth, "Get away from him you son of a b*tch" with a straight face? It's a long fall from his Babylon 5 days. Avoid this at all costs.

Never seen a so bad sh*t
pph90612 November 2005
No scenario, bad actors (poor Melissa Gilbert)... Beurk Beurk Beurk ...

Give a such budget to make this... In Belgium, we make ten films which win all prices in Cannes with this.

Last time that I've seen a such NULL-Film was Hypercube. But scenario was better.

Is anyone knows if the director was a graduate in school-film or a cop ?

The better things in this film was the word "End".

Why authorize to sell this ? 1ç is to expensive.

I've pay ten dollars to buy this.

For me, pay for this was my BIG MISTAKE of millennium.

Too bad.

Next time I'll break my arm but buy this type of sh*t.

Check it out.

"They Are Among Us" is a chilling film about a boy who is more than what he seems. The film has some great creature effects and cool make-up, along with the fact that Michael Maples is hot hot hot and I would die to look like Hunter Tyler. My brother drooled like the creature in the film over her.

I think the actor who plays old chuck is great. He can change his personality so totally in just the turn of his read hat. Its amazing. I think its really sad he passed away. But that why movies are so cool. This way we can remember him forever. And I think this was his last movie

This movie is perfect for a rainy night when you just want to stay in and get scared. And its the kind of film where every time you want it you can notice more layers. Check it out, the performances are strong and the effects are cool.

Routine alien encounter.
RatedVforVinny26 September 2019
A very forgettable aliens-amongst-us movie. Average TV fodder, with a few semi-interesting scenes but only just enough, to keep you watching to the conclusion. In the end, quite a pointless, painful effort. Seek many better examples of this well trodden scenario.

Really Creepy, catch it if you can.
JW007-118 July 2004
Just finished watching its on the Sci-Fi Channel, and its much better than I expected from a TV movie. It was especially good to see Bruce Boxleitner and Nana Visitor working together as they are from my two favorite shows of all times, Babylon 5 and Star Trek:DS9 respectively. Allison Eastwood brings one word to mind, HOT! She can hold me at gunpoint anytime. I don't know who he is but that guy who played Uncle Bob really creeped me out, He kind of reminds me of this weirdo who walks around my campus handing out bibles. I also liked the "Guardian" alien, whoever did the special effects did a great job on that thing. Now I don't know his name but the actor who played the mechanic gave a decent performance as well. Overall I highly recommend it, it has an Invasion of the body snatchers, meets they live feel to it.

Flawed but commendable
Vomitron_G3 August 2011
Writer/director Jeffrey Obrow is another relatively unknown filmmaker, but surely fans of '80s creature features will remember his slimy magnus opus "The Kindred" (1987). In recent years the man brought us "They Are Among Us". What if our parents were actually aliens, starting colonies on earth, converting human beings into their race to secretively walk among us? With a mouthful premise like this, the script could have used a talented supervisor as Obrow's story feels very inconsistent. But still a handful of interesting ideas stand out and the special effects are commendable. In an era where CGI had taken over, Obrow opted for real make-up effects and old fashioned creature designs. A muddled affair, but a curious watch nonetheless.

Skiffy Strikes again
JoeB1311 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Well, they got a washed up star from Babylon 5 AND a washed up star from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as the parents of the alien hybrid kid who is worshiped by a cult of aliens who are here for some reason, but honestly, it was all convoluted. And there are about three times where you think Boxleitner got killed before they actually bothered to kill him.

Bruce, bud, that's your career dying... Babylon 5 was the high point.

The rest of it is some minor actors actually carrying the weight while the real actors do forced cameos while waiting for their paychecks to clear. Or something.

Decent entry, if not overly spectacular
kannibalcorpsegrinder4 September 2015
Living in a small town, friends growing concerned over their friends' strange disappearances stumble across a plot from a group of alien insects that need human collagen to survive and race to stop them from unleashing their deadly plans.

This here was a somewhat decent killer alien film. One of those better points is the beginning in the film where there's a really nice mystery built-up, getting this off to a nice start from the beginning. Starting with the build-up from the mystery about the missing teenagers to the evidence of the parents being involved in the strange scam, this one has some pretty decent scenes from these parts as it's all done to make the rest of the segment feel that much creepier backed behind the other parts in the film setting it up nicely. That the aliens themselves, in the few scenes of them seen, are really nice and Along with the rare on- screen appearances of them leads to some really impressive scenes with them, which is most apparent in the finale which is really fun. They're appearance also works for this, being tall, lanky, scaly and dripping with claws and fangs, which together with their domestic look and demeanor make for a really great creature. There's also a couple of really well-done scenes which are really great, with the party scene at the house taking the simple concept it presents in theory and offering a superb twist down in the basement with the strobe-light in full effect offering up the sacrifice scene, and there's also all the good stuff from being in the underground caves. The last good thing about this one was the acceptably-sized body count, which had some okay deaths if nothing standout or new, but the quantity here takes precedence. These here are the film's good points, though there is a lot of damage caused by its flaws. The biggest issue is that the film has nearly way too much plot going on, as the admittedly-entertaining mystery throws way too many ideas into it that there's simply overkill at a point. There's the fact that the aliens are involved with the crop-circles and medallion as well as the effects of the collagen works well, since they are presented in logic, accurate and believable manners, and this would've been well and good except for the fact that there's the inclusion of the parasite angle. They were terrible enough, but rather than doing anything good about it, this one has the effects of the parasite go indirect opposition of the alien angle. It's almost as though it was thrown in merely to add a twist to the film and make the creatures feel threatening, but it all just feels tacked on instead. The big sequence where it's supposedly mushed together with the other elements but catastrophically fails, making the whole thing more complicating and headache-inducing than necessary. This also brings up the film's other real flaw, the slow pace at the beginning since it's got the different stories woven together, and nothing really happens until the end. These here really hurt the film.

Rated R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence and a clothed sex scene.

Old School Style: They Are Among Us
scifiguy40009 July 2005
My girl friend and I caught it on TV last night and we had a blast watching it. At first we thought it was sort of funny, but by the end we were both totally creeped out. It was great. I would watch it again in a second.

I just want to say the effects are great. None of this new flashy computer stuff that looks all funny and CG; this movie is all real guts and gore, old school style. Lots a good gross out factors.

There really is some great dry humor, too. I had no idea Allison Eastwood could be such a tough chic, but she is so funny with her dead-pan delivery. Her chemistry with that Harlen was great. I don't know about that Devin chic, she was the weakest link in the film but I'll forgive her.

Well done 50's style alien invasion flick
willywants4 August 2005
Things are strange in a small American town, and a race of alien creatures are responsible. It's up to a group of friends and a female alien hunter to save they're town before it's too late! A decent made-for-TV sci-fi film in the vein of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". Good cast including Alison Eastwood and genre vet George 'Buck' Flower. Director/screenwriter Jeffrey Obrow is no stranger to the genre, having also helmed 1987's tentacled-monster-on-the-loose film, "The Kindred". The creature effects are great and there are some nice gory scenes. The film is also surprisingly suspenseful at times, something I certainly didn't expect from a low-budget alien invasion flick in a year like 2004.

If you enjoy 50's-style alien invasion flicks, you'll want to see "They Are Among Us".

6.5/10.

Decent entry, if not overtly spectacular
slayrrr66627 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
"They Are Among Us" is a spectacularly decent killer alien film.

**SPOILERS**

Living in a small town, friends Daniel, (Michael DiLallo) Devon, (Lacey Beeman) and Harlan, (Michael Maples) are growing concerned over the growing number of strange disappearances their friends are experiencing. Thinking that there's something his parents Hugh, (Bruce Boxleitner) and Colette, (Nana Visitor) are hiding, they find a strange medallion hidden away, and after a few attempts at tracking down the truth, stumble across a plot from a group of alien insects. Investigating more with Sammy Finley, (Alison Eastwood) they find that it is a parasitic race of creatures that need human collagen to survive, and is being held down in a conspiracy by Ralph Parks, (Diedre Madsen) June Jarrett, (Hunter Tylo) and Dr. Norbert, (Corbin Bernsen) prominent members of town and race to stop them from unleashing their deadly plans.

The Good News: This here was a somewhat decent killer alien film. That the aliens themselves, in the few scenes of them seen, are really nice and one of those points. They're tall, lanky, scaly and dripping with claws and fangs, together with their domestic look and demeanor make for a really great creature. Along with the rare on-screen appearances of them in total, it leads to some really impressive scenes with them. They are most apparent in the finale, which is really fun. From the prevalent windstorm to the creepy locations, which set-up a nice atmosphere, this one has a really creepy air at times. The beginning in the film, where there's a really nice mystery built-up, also works for this. From the mystery about the missing teenagers to the evidence of the parents being involved in something, there's some pretty decent scenes from these parts as it's all done to make the other parts feel that much creepier since it's backed behind the other parts in the film setting it up nicely. There's also a couple of really well-done scenes which are really great. The party scene at the house is awesome, taking the simple concept it presents in theory and offering a superb twist when, down in the basement with the strobe-light in full effect, it offers up the sacrifice scene and is even better for it. There's also all the good stuff from being in the underground caves, which always produce some good scenes. Anytime down in there is really good and satisfies with their inclusion. The last good thing about this one was the acceptably-sized body count, which had some okay deaths if not anything new or standout-ish, but the quantity here takes precedence. These here are the film's good points.

The Bad News: There wasn't a huge flaw to this one, though there is a lot of damage caused by it. The biggest issue is that the film has nearly way too much plot going on, as, entertaining as the mystery is, throws in way too many parts and ideas into it that there's simply overkill at a point. It's almost as though it was thrown in merely to add a twist to the film and make the creatures feel threatening. It all just feels tacked on instead, and then comes the big sequence where it's supposedly mushed together with the other elements but catastrophically fails, making the whole thing more complicating and headache-inducing than necessary. This also brings up the film's other real flaw, the slow pace at the beginning since its got the different stories woven together. Nothing really happens until the end, and the set-up for this is a little lacking. These here really hurt the film.

The Final Verdict: This here wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that great either and had a few problems with it that really lower this one. Really only give this entry a chance if you're into these kinds of creature features or are in the mood for cheesy, harmless fun, otherwise heed caution.

Rated R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence and a clothed sex scene

Okay for one viewing (some spoilers in review)
TylerFX25 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this the other night and it was just okay. I wouldn't watch it again most likely. At first the acting was a little weak (like watching an amateur student film or something), but it got better as the movie went along. I really liked Michael Maples (Harlan) performance the best of the unknown teens in the movie. Liked the Old Chuck character too.

During Hunter Tylo's first scene, she was in bed with a guy and I laughed out loud when I realized that it was her real life husband. Of course his scene was very short LOL.

There were a couple of things that didn't make sense or weren't explained in the movie though.

When Harlan confronts Tylo's character, she tries to seduce him and says she's going to eat him up (which is what she apparently did to the first guy it showed her in bed with, though it didn't show that, it just showed them in bed and then the camera panned out of the bedroom and you hear the guy scream and you hear kind of a crunching sound), but he has her number (he knows what she is in other words) and he tells her to stay away from him and he calls her an "alien wh*re". She tells him to keep his mouth shut and just look pretty. It fades to another scene with other characters. Next time it shows Harlan, it appears that he's been taken over by one of the alien parasites. Later, we find out he was pretending to be one of the aliens. It didn't make sense why the female alien character didn't kill him like she did the other guy. They didn't explain it at all. They just left you wondering. That was pretty stupid and a big whole in the story on the part of the writers.

The giant alien creature in the movie was pretty goofy looking for a movie anyway. It looked like something that would appear on an episode of "Buffy" or "Angel". It wasn't as bad as something that might have appeared on a "Hercules" episode (like that stupid giant rooster or the muck monsters/creatures that Autolycus and Iolaus turned into in that same episode).

The form of the aliens before they took on a human host weren't too bad looking though.

There are plot holes and some bad dialogue and the ending is kind of blah, but overall, it's all right for one viewing, especially if you're bored. You're not missing much if you skip the movie, but if you tape it off of sci-fi and then watch it later and fast forward through the commercials and some of the more slower scenes, it's over quickly enough that you're not wasting too much of your time. I started it at like 2am and was finished before 330 am.
