RELAX, I'M A DOCTOR TOO.
nogodnomasters13 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The slasher code states that kids who have sex by the lake must die. This movie starts out honoring that code. The killings happen around a annual harvest festival when college kids converge on Devil's Lake. The last one happened 20 years ago, now they are happening again. Same murderer? Copycat? There are a number of suspects: The family of the convicted murderer who claims their son/brother was wrongly accused. A new guy in town, son of a former resident. The old sheriff who believes they are connected. The deputy who is jilted. The creepy town pathologist.

After 8 people are killed the sheriff proclaims, ""Although there have been nine murders, we're not ready to say that any of this is connected." The movie just wasn't that great. The characters and dialogue were bland as were most of the murders.

F-bomb, sex, good initial nude scene with topless chase through woods.

Midly entertaining low budget slasher
TdSmth512 October 2014
In the intro a couple is out in the woods when a masked killer appears and kills them.

Billy arrives in the small town of Devil's Lake to do his internship in forensics(?). He's following the same path of his father, who did the same. He meets the lovely coroner office manager and they connect immediately. But her ex is a deputy sheriff and has a hard time letting go. More killings ensue. It's the yearly harvest festival and college kids flock to the town to party. We meet some of these kids as they meet their demise at the hands of the masked killer.

The town's sheriff is more interested in keeping the lid on things and is clueless about any possible suspects. He talks to some old townspeople who give some obscure hints. 20 years ago the town was in the same situation with a serial killer on the loose. They caught the guy who killed himself before trial. But these guys at least have their doubts whether he was the right guy.

Killings continue and Billy and the girl have to start investigating on their own. There's also a retired cop who has his suspicions. There are a couple of candidates for killer and a twist at the end.

Harvest of Fear looks, feels, and sounds like an 80s movie. But for the tiny budget it's actually alright. There's no shortage of problems. There is really no main character. Billy starts of as the main character but then vanishes for a good part of the movie and re-appears at the end. There's not any character development either. The only thing that develops is the relationship between Billy and the girl. For a whodunnit there's a complete absence of possible killers, of sinister or mysterious characters. That movie starts out with some great nudity and even though it deals with partying college students doesn't feature any additional nudity. Overall it's on OK movie if you know what you're getting yourself into and don't expect some masterpiece.

Forgettable
Roddenhyzer22 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The term may be a bit overused in movie reviews and comments, but if there's a word that perfectly sums up "Harvest of Fear", it's "generic". There's just nothing, not a single element, that would make this movie stand out in any way among the countless other low budget slashers out there, or prevent it from being the instantly forgettable experience that it is. Well, at least not in a positive sense. I gotta admit, the rate at which characters are introduced and immediately killed off again actually is pretty remarkable. It reaches a point where I cannot even identify a clear protagonist anymore. I mean, sure, it's not unusual for slasher movies to feature disposable side characters as fodder for the killer, but "Harvest of Fear" takes this way too far. There's a scene halfway into the movie where a group of teenagers discuss the killing of one of their friends, pondering whether they should still throw that party they had planned... and all I'm thinking is "Who the hell are you people and where did you come from?". Ironically, the one character who does get excessive screen time and some development is a spectacularly irritating police officer with some severe anger issues, who spouts nothing but aggressive, overly confrontational insults and one-liners at anyone who looks at him funny. He's the most unlikable person in the entire movie, and of course, he survives up until the end.

Another thing that bugged me a little was that the writers have taken the slasher movie "rules" and conventions, as satirized by films like "Scream", or "Behind the Mask", a bit too literally. Almost every victim in this movie is slaughtered -immediately- after having had sex, or consumed some kind of drug. Flash some breasts, get the knife. Light a joint, get the knife. Have a beer, get the knife, and so on; you get the idea. I don't know if they were intentionally going for a parodic effect, but this repetitive, predictable formula makes the killings almost comical.

There's also a halfhearted attempt at a murder mystery in there, but blah, who cares about "whodunit" if the characters involved are so disposable, one can barely remember their names?

All in all, "Harvest of Fear" is not at the absolute bottom end of the spectrum of low budget horror movies. The direction was okay for the most part and the way the death scenes were filmed indicated that this could have all been a whole lot better, if it hadn't been for this godawful script with its throwaway characters and overly fragmented back story.

I paid money for this?
Dragoneyed36323 August 2008
What a terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, did I mention, terrible movie. You can tell just by the DVD cover not to get this movie, but unfortunately that was not the case for me. Well, someone brought this home for me to watch after they bought it from a local Movie Gallery. They asked if I wanted it over the phone, and I had no idea what it was, and it was in the $1 bin, so I just said get it, and when I looked at it after they brought it to me I just wanted to strangle the person, because they used my one dollar, yes I am upset about that, and should have known I would not like it. I will certainly be taking it back soon, but I might as well tell you all about it while I have it in memory, for I definitely want to forget it.

Without a doubt, one of the worst films I have ever seen. The acting was so horrifically disgusting, as well as the deaths being entirely lame and predictable. I did not even laugh at how bad this movie was, which usually B-movies are good for a laugh if anything else. The plot was ludicrous, and it was very boring because of how poor it was. Lucky me, it is just in my nature to never turn a movie off, so I suffered through it. Do not see this film, shame on you if you are even looking at this movie page, and I have extreme pity for you if you are looking at this movie page, because I bet you thought this would be decent after hearing about it, somehow, and decided to see what everyone else thought. Think again. Final word: Yuck.

EDIT: I still own this movie, but it is still not even laughably bad.

Could very well be the WORST film of 2004!
markzarkdavis-14 April 2005
I have to say that there is one redeeming speck in regards to this "film". It firmly establishes the bottom of the barrel. Now filmmakers know what to aim above when making a movie. Other than that I regret watching this debacle. What shameless abandon the making of this "film" was. What a waste of $100,000 (that's right folks, ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND dollars). This "film" reminds me of that "Adult Video Awards" show in which of group of "industrial prostitutes" stand up a praise themselves, believing that they are real actors, actresses and filmmakers. Ironic then how I've watched blue movies with better acting, directing and writing. I also found it funny that the Executive Producer, Justin Ament, just had to be in the "movie". He plays Deputy Jake Barker. I'm sure his "acting" career has taken off... Ted Pfiffer, the writer, has a part. He no doubt was wallowing in the clichéd glory he created. It should be noted that Carrie Finklea has a lead role in the movie. You might remember her from Gus Van Sant's 'Elephant'. Though I'm not too sure that she'll want to write this film on her resume. And I'm not sure which is a more depressing point; money was spent to make this film or people are going to watch it. Along with 'Torque', 'Godsend' and 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow', one of the worst films, IF NOT THE WORST FILM, of 2004.

Good story for a slasher movie!!!
jbolympic19 August 2004
I live up in the Portland metro area and heard about the filming so I was waiting to hear about it when it was showing locally. Sure enough I had the chance to see it and I thought it was pretty well done for a low budget film. Special effects were not too bad at all. My favorite character (even though his part was not that big) was that creepy guy who played the son, he was whittling on the porch. I thought he was guilty for sure. Nevertheless I thought he kind of stole the show. I have a knack for spotting undiscovered talent and can see big things on the horizon for him. I've predicted the success of many different actors having spotted them early in their careers.

Clichéd boredom
Zbigniew_Krycsiwiki14 June 2013
Clichés galore here: squad car 66 (where's the third 6?) Devil's Lake, etc. Killings took place 20 years ago, killings begin again on the anniversary, for yet another cliché.

What could go wrong at costume party held soon after after two killings, a party held by friends of the deceased? It obviously didn't take them long to mourn their friends' deaths. Killer shows up at party, no one suspects anything is amiss, as it is a costume party. Cops named Barker (Clive?) and Jim (John?) Carpenter investigate. They even go to the town drunk to get answers. Killer almost looks like he is wearing a burlap sack on his head, carrying a Rambo knife. Nonsensical ending, killer is retroactively inserted into storyline.

My critique is admittedly disjointed and fragmented, but that is because the movie is so forgettable that I can hardly remember anything more about it, other than the fact that I was bored to tears by it.

There's a serial killer on the loose...but we payed for the place for six more days
adamclark-0176710 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A poor mans Friday the 13th. Like, really poor. Electricity's been cut off, Employment Insurance has run out, "they're going to break my knees if I don't pay up soon" poor. The filming quality looks good. There's some boobs. But the acting is some of the worst I've seen in a long run if movies with bad acting. The piss-poor script doesn't help. It's terrible across the board but the worst has to be the lead Ryan Deal, only because he gets top billing in this movie. He has this permanent smile/smirk that makes him look like every shot is a headshot.

The violence is pretty lame. Lots of throats get slashed. A bit of variation would be nice: It's really funny that it doesn't seem to bother the people that know what's going on too much. Police, parents, obvious victims; no one seems too worried or surprised. "so our friend got impaled by a pitchfork...but we payed for the place for six more days and we're seniors!" That's seriously the logical processing the group of kids has. Honestly, that's dumb enough to make me keep watching. There's been a plethora of dumb logic in horror movies but that takes it to a new level to where I have to see where this goes.

"Got a condom?" "I have one in my car, I'll be right back!" "For a lighter?" "I must have left it by the barbecue, I'll be right back!"

Possibly the worst horror movie I've seen. And that's saying a lot. And not even in a "it's so bad it's good" way. This is just so bad it's bad.

Lame but not as terrible as anticipated
TheLittleSongbird5 January 2015
Harvest of Fear is not a good movie but any stretch of the imagination but it, judging from what has been said about it from the reviews and from a lot of my friends how bad it was, could have been far worse.

It doesn't look too bad, in fact the production values were the best thing about it. The scenery is striking and have a good atmosphere and while reminiscent of the 80s Harvest of Fear is nicely lit and the photography while not exceptional is well above average(especially for low-budget slasher movies). Some of the music is decent and actually fits in quite well within the movie, and the sound mixing is clearer and less muddied than most slasher movies.

Harvest of Fear does have too much wrong with it. While some of the music is decent, there are times where it is used in too obvious a way, especially in the build up to the death scenes, when the soundtrack swells and crescendos it doesn't take rocket science to know that something bad is going to happen. The death scenes themselves were disappointing, far too repetitive and lacking in any kind of imagination, furthermore the over-obviousness of the soundtrack kills any suspense they could have had. Harvest of Fear's script is very clunky, the dialogue is enough to make your eyes roll so much they get stuck eventually while it is also ridden with clichés and very, very rarely makes sense. Story-wise Harvest of Fear is as unimaginative and atmosphere-less as you can possibly got. The more derivative it got, and it did so almost immediately after the beginning scene, the less intriguing it got, and the tension and scare factors are even less than that. The characters are one-note throughout, including the killer, and the acting is not much better, most of the acting in the secondary roles are laughably bad actually.

All in all, very lame and not a good movie at all but Harvest of Fear could have been much worse than it turned out to be. 3/10 Bethany Cox

Wow! What a great slasher movie....
doubleshottalent4 December 2008
I really liked the bowie knife wielding hillbilly. Where did they ever get someone like that to play this part? LOL. This movie was a lot of fun to watch. Very entertaining. I sure appreciated the low amount of foul language you see so much of in today's movies. Maybe because the setting was a small town and people just speak more respectful in these places. Wonderful surprise ending. Great cast all around and really nailed the editing for surprising effects. Some of the scenes were similar to other slasher movies yet there was a more surprising acting from this group of talent. This movie tells a story just the right way. Good luck to all the talent involved with this production. Hope to see more work from youz guyz real soon. MG
