Well actually maybe not. Especially when it gets into the fanatic parts of religion. So far as to really be a hurdle in school - and therefor in everyday life too. It is one thing to have something to believe in. It may give solace and peace to some. But it never ends well (no pun intended), if it goes to the extreme.
A young girl who doesn't even know yet who she is - who she wants to be, already has a disadvantage with her new father. And since her mother does not seem to be able (or willing) to help her ... Drama evolves and really gets stronger every minute that passes.
While I would think that child services would have to say something about certain things happening here, you have to suspend your disbelief - so that the movie can happen and work. Well told, acted and edited, the tension holds up until the very end ...
