It seemed desperate at times

Warning: Spoilers
"Video Kings" is a German German-language film from 2007, so this one has its 10th anniversary this year. These roughly 1.5 hours were written and directed by Daniel Acht and Ali Eckert and for both, it is probably their most known career effort so far. This does not really say anything too positive though as I found the outcome underwhelming at all. Busch in the lead did not impress me and Möhring also did not have the material to be as memorable as his character's physical looks. We basically find out about the personal struggles (romance) and the professional struggles with his boss and his badly-paid video store employment for the character named Flo. Maybe German film buffs will also recognize other actors like Thorwarth or Bela B. And even Til Schweiger had a little cameo here, which did come surprising. He appears towards the end next to the comedy duo Badesalz. Overall, I must sadly say that the comedy all in all was not working well enough to make this film memorable to me whatsoever. A great deal of mediocrity in here. The ending also feels fairly forced in terms of how happy it was and how things took a turn for the right for the protagonist. And as comedy is really the only genre where this one tries to succeed and has any ambition to make an impact, the success there, or I maybe should say "lack of success", is crucial for the overall outcome and perception. And finally I want to talk about all the film references in here because this was really annoying me how the writers here wanted so desperately make sure that we see the protagonist as a huge film nerd, maybe to make a connection with him as we are fellow film nerds too. But honestly the way he was talking about films all the time felt truly unauthentic and scripted and it hurt the realism component a lot as many references felt absurd and in a way "an den Haaren herbeigezogen" as we say here in Germany. It also made the entire project more annoying and kept the audience from at least finding the central character somewhat likable. So yes this was a mediocre film for the most part and sometimes even pretty bad. I hope that the duo managed to step things up in the last decade. Their combined effort here is not worth watching. Skip it.

Surprisingly unfunny even by german standards

This movie is your average german comedy and it does everything wrong that german comedies and movies in general get wrong. The humor is silly and depends for a big part on the actors looking funny and behaving in stereotypical ways. The lines are horribly written and the way the protagonists talk and act doesn't resemble how people actually talk. There is no depth to the humor, it's stale, flat and at times plainly dumb. The lighting has the typical telenovela look of german movies - oversaturated, undynamic, lackluster and it's never used as an artistic tool. This movie tries too hard to be something along the lines of Bang Boom Bang, a good example of a really funny and well executed german comedy, but fails miserably because it's just too tame and does nothing new. Some of the actors are well known and have been seen in better movies, but the acting in this movie looks downright amateurish at times. Something I blame on lack of direction and probably some really bad decisions in the cutting room. Also the lines are written in a way that barely make sense in a real conversation and would be hard to deliver for any actor. The characters are so bland you just don't care about them. I found it hard to watch it to the end and can't recommend it to anyone.

What a great comedy!

"Videokings" is definitely one of the best German comedies of 2007! The plot starts very simple: Two losers in a videostore with lots of problems: Whisky + women (and money)

The main cast Fabian Busch and Wotan Wilke Möhring play so well together. So many nice actors we haven't seen for a while ... I liked Bela B. the best. But not to forget Badesalz and Til Schweiger as the "helpers from above" Cinematography is excellent, although most of the movie is shot in one location (the videostore) it's always surprising. There are some hints and hidden links to famous movies that make you laugh even more. And all this on an low budget basis, many big budget movies are not that funny! I can recommend it to everyone who speaks at least a little German. I have watched the movie several times and it still does not loose its fun!

Big Comedy!

Haven't laughed in a German Comedy that much for years! Definitely one of the best that German Cinema has brought up in the last 5 years. Great characters, well defined by intelligent dialogues in a simple, but stunning setting. You don't know what is "typical Berlin"? Go and see the film! Have never seen Til Schweiger as an anti-hero before. Seeing him with the two "Badesalz"-angels in heaven absolutely cracked me up. Very good cinematography and I immediately fell in love with Fabian Busch as "Flo". What a sensitive, professional and good looking actor! Intelligent humor, and if you're a real cineast you will find lots of scenes that remind you of something you have heard before...long long time ago. Entertainment at its best!!

Surprisingly funny!

Having been dragged into cinemas before just because some German film featured some German celebrity that I "really really" have to see acting I was surprised to notice that this time the film was actually great! Typical story, guy (Fabian Busch) falls in love with girl (Monica Nancy Wick), everything goes wrong and somehow hes just living an awfully boring life where nothing ever works out. And I mean nothing. However ordinary I thought the story was in the beginning (although I almost fell from the seat laughing at that mullet memorial guy), it turned out to be very original. Wont be telling you, though... watch it yourselves. Amazed by what you can create with almost no budget! Its definitely worth having in your DVD collection. While you're at it, get the soundtrack too ;) Damn good music!!
