Entertaining, but really stupid.
TOMNEL29 November 2006
I enjoy this show, however it is absolutely stupid. Dog is a bounty hunter. However, Dog can't fight. Dog has a horrible temper, along with his girlfriend (later wife) Beth. He often gets mad and yells at the people and then pretends like their good buddies. He carries mace around and sprays it in people's eyes. This show is entertaining to most, I'm sure, but it is a show full of simpleton idiots that I often can't stand. Sometimes the situations on the show seem almost soap opera or sitcom-y. It's a ridiculous show, and Dog is a bit uneven tempered, though he also seems like a nice guy, so I'm sure most will enjoy the stupid going ons. Dog

My rating: ** out of ****. 60 mins.

Proof that the mentally challenged can become millionaires.
13Funbags2 May 2017
I'm sure lots of people hate this show and I'm also sure they hate it for the wrong reasons. They probably have the same attitudes as all the "locals" who always hate Dog.I'm sure they hate the show because of what Dog stands for, which is silly because there are tons of real reasons to hate it.And here's why...They always said Dog and Youngblood were brothers. They aren't even related.Beth's real name is Dorothy and that makes total sense. No Beth could look like that but most Dorothys do.They act like they are a super close family but Duane Lee didn't know when Garry's birthday was or even how old he was.Dorothy Chapman spent a lifetime in the law enforcement community and doesn't even know the basic lingo. She said "abedding" dozens of times throughout the series.Abedding isn't even a word, how stupid is she?Not too stupid compared to her husband it seems. He said "ValentiMe's" day at least a dozen times in multiple episodes. Not to be outdone, mush mouth Leland even chimes in with "cult a sack".These fools have millions of dollars and I can't afford a cell phone, life is real fair.On top of all that, the show was extremely fake. They always call the fugitive names and act like they are scum and then act like they love them at the end.One time they were after a guy who's crime was driving without a license. They said things like "We gotta get this scumbag. He's driving while our babies are on the streets".Are they saying that having a license makes you a better driver?I can prove that's not true. What about the episode when Youngblood suddenly had a bunch of kids and there was no mom? How about them hiding Lyssa's mongrel baby and pretending she didn't have sex with black adults when she was 14?As bad as it was, it's still better than every other "reality" show.

Quite strange at first, but then...
presbyterian119 May 2006
When this show first aired and I saw commercials for it I thought, "Just another really strange reality show." But then, I happened upon an episode and thought, "You know, this isn't half bad." Yes, they are quite the interesting looking group (especially the tattoos, hair, and clothing), and yes, some of the dialogue is poor (although supposedly real). However, what impressed me about this show is that, like Cops, I does deal with real people in unrehearsed situations. It is also interesting to see that Dog really does care about those he is "hunting" and even gathers his team together to say a prayer before each time they venture out.

Again, just like Cops, some of the episodes move quite quickly and will keep you on the edge of your seat and then some of the episodes are quite slow and you find yourself wishing that they would just catch the fugitive already.

This show won't win any awards but it is entertaining.

Surprisingly Fascinating
Kashmir-41 October 2004
It's too bad that IMDb doesn't provide a whole lot of information because this show is really interesting (at least, I think it is). Basically, it's about a family of bail-bondsmen (and women) led by gruff, blue-collar (and intimidating) patriarch "Dog" Chapman. This is a literal family, mind you, where his son, brother, nephew and wife work alongside him to maintain his business. This is a man who comes from a very rough background to become a figure of redemption and responsibility for the state of Hawaii. The most interesting aspect, I believe, is watching the character study of someone who is very street-smart, unlike someone such as myself who comes from a very safe, middle-class upbringing and college eduction.

White Trash Train Wreck
Brave_Sir_Robin16 April 2006
I've known some guys in real life who track down bail-skippers. The glorified term for these individuals is "bounty hunter." In reality, these guys are pretty much career low-life deadbeats themselves. They've always had convictions for various petty crimes. They can be counted on to lie a lot, with or without a reason. They're prone especially to boasting wildly about themselves, often professing expertise in areas where they haven't the first clue.

But most of all, they have big, swaggering Napolean complexes. They love to remind people that they're Big Bad Bounty Hunters, flashing their badges whenever possible, flexing their flimsy authority in any situation, faking as much Dirty Harry machismo as they can muster.

In this respect, "Dog the Bounty Hunter" gives an accurate portrayal of the bounty hunter. Trashy simpletons posing as authority figures, dressed in black vests and combat fatigues instead of real police uniforms, wielding over-sized cans of pepper spray in lieu of real police arms, brandishing "bounty hunter" badges instead of real police badges. Serving society in the only halfway legitimate role of which they're capable, apprehending other petty criminals.

It's so exciting to listen to Dog's crew hype themselves into believing they're after some real armed and dangerous badasses, not the drug addicts and other sorry trash they usually are. It's keenly interesting to watch them drive in circles on the island searching for an address, taking delight in harassing people who live near the fugitive, accompanied by a narrative of flubbed Hollywood tough-guy lines.

But the most ridiculous, hypocritical part of the show comes after they nab their fugitive, on the ride back to jail. Dog invariably lectures the unfortunate prisoner as to what he needs to do in life, often stating the absolute most obvious solution, nakedly apparent to the simplest mind. "Well what you need to do is get off the drugs." How I love to hear imperious idiots preach to others with their special insight. Don't we all?

Actually, I don't enjoy ripping on genuinely stupid people, and it does become apparent that Dog isn't a smart man. I'll admit, I almost feel sorry for him. That is, until he and the White Trash Squad try to talk with overly dramatic, paper-thin toughness to somebody, and then I go back to despising him.

If you love watching some human trash bags trying to affirm to themselves their manhood, acting with inflated authority, playing pretend police officers, and proselytizing to freakin' drug addicts, this show will keep you captive.

Otherwise, regard it as another miserable reality-show glimpse into someone else's train wreck life. Bravo.

Horrid

Warning: Spoilers
The worst yet , and they are bringing it back for as the executives put it '' the freak show appeal'' their words . They have that absolutely right its as offensive as it gets, you see this group degrade the people they are trying to catch . Until they catch them then they suddenly care deeply for each an every one of these unfortunates , and give their best and sincerest advice , until they drop them of at the jail and shout '' another one bites the dust '' gleefully .The superficial nature fits for sure as do the unflattering costumes , if you rather not stick your finger down your throat , then tune in here .This will get the job done for sure .I love the name another commenter gave the female ''Torpedo boobs '' !!!!!! Perfect !

Dirt bag with a license
aca-paul10 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
OK, This guy is a dirt bag. He may claim to be some kind of "Born Again Christian" By cleaning up society, but the very people he goes after are those that JC hung out with. His background in any type of criminal/subculture labels him as a RAT/SNITCH/PUNK-ASS BITCH! If this clown were ever to show up in my neck of the woods, I would do all that I could to ruin his day and mess up his "hunting". HEY DOG!, IF YOU CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE THAT WHAT YOU DO IS MORALY RIGHT, PLEASE DO SO! UNTIL THEN, KNOW THAT I AM YOUR ENEMY AND THAT WE WILL MEET IF YOU EVER SHOW UP IN MY TOWN......Yeah, i'd like to see a lot of tweekers, rapoes and cho-mo's kept behind bars and away from society and I don't think the police are able to do their job the way they should, but the way you come across on TV is wrong and again, if that is your true portrayal then you and I should never be in the same town at the same time.

WOW these people need putting down never mind a real dog
Jashworth799 January 2013
It amazes me that they send out this bunch of reprobates out to do any type of work that involves living real-life people I'm sorry but the US is crazy giving these guys any sort of power over a human being let alone a can of pepper spay crazy and sick and wow I hate this show, every-time my BF puts it on I put my headphones in , it actually makes me feel sick. They treat all the clients like they are dirt and yes I know they have committed a crime and no I'm not a bleeding heart liberal but a) we all make mistakes Dog more than most people and b) half of the time the crime is something really small most of them not having done much more than not paying a fine and jumping bail, maybe a drug charge or ICE as these morons dog and his brainless crew call it ( does dog and his crew think it makes them sound cool really ? come on) If this show doesn't show what happens when you give stupid people a little power I don't know what does , it may as well be called the bully show because they bully everyone they are so mean to the family of the law breakers it's not their fault their son/ sister etc or whatever has issues and dog and his crew just bully them just plain horrid . The people who make this show should be ashamed.

What is wrong with some of the posters?
terulian_maveric6 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, first off, before I get to reviewing, I've done my research. Duane "Dog" Chapman was arrested and convicted for being an accessory to murder-1, that is, he was present and didn't stop another member of the gang he was then a member of, the Devil's Disciples, from murdering that person. He was in for 5 years, and got out on probation after helping stop a prison break. To the poster whom said that he's not a legal bounty hunter, all you did was post the laws in your particular state, I'm guessing, on what qualifications you need to be a bounty hunter. To the person who said that bounty hunters are supposed to kill... no. Too much Star Wars for you. Boba Fett's line of work was more along the lines of "Assassin". In the real world, a bounty hunter is hired by a bail bondsman to go collect criminals who fail to appear in court. In some cases, they're considered to be law enforcement officials, which means that they get full co-operation from local law enforcement. As for another poster who asked about him going after Osama, he's been quoted as saying he would go for him if the US Government would put him on the case.

Now, as for the illegal capture, he went to Mexico to capture a rapist, and since bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico, he broke a law, but wouldn't catching a rapist be worth it? I think so.

Anyway, this show follows the work of Dog and his family. Wife by common law marriage, Beth, sons Leland and Duane Lee (as of season 2), and "brother" Tim (there's no actual relation), and the Dog himself go out and apprehend fugitives. He's very successful, probably due to the camera not showing when he's missed his marks. I think that many episodes show a great insight into the flaws of the criminal justice system, because they do exist. It's really a good show, if you like the sort of real-life action that comes from bounty hunting and catching fugitives.

Time to put the dog down
therubixtheory7 October 2008
This is supposed to be entertainment, this.

I don't see what the appeal is in a group of ugly, cheesy waterworld enthusiasts that never take off their sunglasses arresting hispanics.

The show is clearly fake.

they meet up with a victim, usually a woman and in both episodes i've seen they are hispanic, then torpedo boobs comforts her, the woman clearly cannot find a way to cry so opts to hide her face on her car seat, between her hands or in the mighty clasp of the torpedo boobs.

although you can hear what the woman says her words are subtitled, is this a racist thing or do they think people really don't hear what she's saying.

then they arrest the person at the end of the episode and all this hispanic couple do is hug and kiss, the man doesn't even try to get away, meanwhile Dog and the others spout some idealistic religious crap to make it seem like the only answer to this druggies way of life is taking on Christianity.

Then get this, they choose themselves whether or not to have the guy arrested or set them completely free.

This show is not only terrible, it's bad for the environment, because we've had 5 seasons of this group trail the streets in massive 4x4's.

No redeeming qualities, clearly fake, clearly unscripted because i cant imagine any writer worth their weight in A4 paper would write for this show, and the characters look ridiculous.

If only people would research before posting something as fact...
djkittie8 November 2019
Someone posted that Dog is not a legal bounty hunter. He posted all the details BUT, reading literacy is a big deal when quoting something that they think would pertain to their case. Now, if Dog was sworn in as a bounty hunter the year 2000 or later (as stated in his post) then yes, Dog would not be legal. But Dog has been in the bounty hunter business for decades and before the year 2000. Waaaay before 2000. So, him being a convicted felon doesn't apply to him as stated in the facts you posted. Shame... dismissing one's character simply because you failed to read!! I will have you know that Before Dog was on TV, he was already one of the best bounty hunters in the country. He was discovered by another A&E's series about strange/unusual jobs.

It May Be Set in Paradise! But It's not Paradise!
Sylviastel6 November 2006
Watching Dog is quite interesting. I have to admit that I don't find him attractive in the least. Maybe it's the tattoos and the hair, he does act more like a professional wrestler. His wife and partner, Beth Smith, is his perfect match. His sons also help in bringing runaway bail breakers to justice. If these people were smart, they would realize that breaking bail is a serious offense anyway. I can't believe that this is all happening on the beautiful, idyllic Hawaiian Islands. Obviously, I have never been to Hawaii but long to go. They show a side of Hawaii that's not in the tour books because life in Hawaii does have a price in itself. It has crime, poverty, unemployment, and drugs as well. As a tourist, we would only see what the tour books write about. But at least Dog and his gang are showing us that even in paradise, crime occurs. They could do this anywhere but the fact that they are based in Hawaii shows us that even in paradise, you can't escape the pitfalls of life.

Trash
Scott-0019 February 2012
What could be said about this Trash. I read the reviews and they all seem to be written by this clown Dog and his family & friends. I have know a couple of real bail jumping bondsmen and it does not take 6 to 8 people to catch 1 weak runner. If they really want to make this show interesting why don't they make it for real. Why not match up Doggie and the cow against the Steriod clown off of repo men that likes to bully people on their own property when the blunder the repo of someones car. If this clown show up on my property looking for someone they need to the law with them because that is who I am calling to haul him away. The show should not be shown to anyone under 25 because it will lower their IQ.

Dog the Bounty Hunter, the best new reality show on television.
dsmith2-18 October 2004
I have watched this show and I applaud the actions of Dog and his team.I think it is great that Duane "Dog" Chapman involves his family in his business.Too many men are too busy trying to make a name for themselves and they leave their families on the sidelines forgetting that if it was not for their families support they would not be in the position that they are in.Dog does not forget that he respects and appreciates his family. The fact that he stepped up to the plate when it came to his son Leland and taught Leland the ropes really speaks volumes about what kind of a stand up person he really is.Not only that but Leland is one hot looking guy so what is not to love about the show.

HuskyEnzo24 October 2008
Okay let's skip it: this is crap; or even lower.

Aside of the whole "Wrestlemania"-issue (this serves the same customers) I've never seen such a no-brainer. I zapped through the channels one late night couple years ago and saw three episodes or so.

I thought "...that can't be true...". To get arrested by those guys and seen that aired all over the world is truly "capital punishment". Pardon that poor subjects and set them free, they are branded for life. It's surely the only show, dumber than "Knight Rider".

System requirements: IQ 20. From 50 upward there might be system-failures. Doesn't run on average brains.

He is Just Trailer Trash
tommydewars22 May 2009
I watched about 2 min., max!,

and saw the lowlife trailer trash they really are, AeTV, I know everyone needs money, but c'mon. Just look at him, his fat slob of a wife, and relatives, if it were'nt for TV, he would be back in jail. I'd like to see how he handles himself in jail by himself, he'd be the "Bell of the Ball", his dance card would be filled every night, Nice hair honey! If you like the show you're most likely related to this lowlife in one form or another, I.E, you are trailer trash.

And No, I'm not jealous, I have a HOUSE that's free and clear in Glendora Hills Ca. and live in Vegas during NFL season, so what's that tell you!

GET RID OF THESE LOW CLASS PEOPLE ON REALITY TV SHOWS,

NOT GOOD TV

Horrible Garbage People
Johnny_West1 November 2019
Dog is pathetic. He wears all kind of body armor, and is armed to the teeth to pick up people that jumped bail on small crimes and misdemeanors. Any time there is any type of action, it looks completely fake and staged.

This show is pure hype, and a whole lot of nothing. Dog is the one who should be in jail for ripping off the public.

Dear Dog:
MWNiese29 June 2013
Dear Dog: You are a disgusting piece of racist white trash and your inbred kids and fat wife make me sick. Do you really think that Jesus Christ is OK with what you do to poor people? Your children look like inbreds and your wife needs a breast reduction operation. Do you really need a convoy of three SUV's to track down washed up drug addicts and drunks? You're a hypocrite of the worst kind sir. Do really think you're a man of God? You're an abomination of humanity with absolutely no clue of what's really going on around you. Your posse of pussies makes me sick to my stomach. A & E channel used to be a classy channel, which makes me just flabbergasted as to why they ever picked up this trash? Your hair reminds me of a bad WWF nightmare from 1986. I'm going to recommend the FBI start their search for Jimmy Hoffa in your scalp. I think the worst punishment for the poor wimps you thug would be having to watch you and your gorilla tits wife have sex.

Silly entertainment, don't listen to the ones in tens in reviews
jackhikenskill18 April 2024
OK, so the show is silly entertainment. It's reality TV and people should acknowledge it for that. People giving the show nine or tens is just a huge fan of the show and trying to up the rating while people giving it ones or twos are just sad haters. Is the show a 1 or 10, heck no it's more in the middle. It's just proof that people really shouldn't have the power to review and rate things on this app because people are just not responsible enough to put their feelings aside and given honest review. I'm sure there is a reason why people don't like the show either because they're not fans of bounty hunters or they are locals of the area and don't like dog. Overall, it's fun, silly entertainment to throw on that you shouldn't take that seriously and if you don't like it don't watch it, but to say it's a 1, please be real. Also I feel that if you really think the show is that bad why would you even bother writing a review. I believe the Kardashians show is one of the worst things ever, but I don't go and review their show, because I could care less. People are just so sad.

Horrible
carmeleeorlanda23 April 2015
I have never watched an episode of this show until today. But after watching episode "Into the Jungle" I am glad and relieved that this show has been canceled and will not be watching any future reruns. I had watched Beth berate a man (not the fugitive targeted but another man living in a makeshift home, one of many, nearby) telling him he needed to move and proceeded to let him know that he is a "smart man" so her point was that there is no reason he should be "living like this". How horrible is that. First off Beth, your "encouraging words" towards that man does not benefit him but rather you (there is no compassion in your voice but rather irritation). Second, there are a lot of homeless people that are "smart" but intelligence does not escape someone from homelessness and poverty if we take into account affordable housing shortfall, house price increase and job layoffs. Your statement of "You're a smart man" is ignorant. Yes, these people have built their homes on FEDERAL LAND. However, how much better would it be as American citizens (and those that are not) to implement effective strategies to combat homelessness rather than to simply spew out "I am a TAXPAYER" and "This is FEDERAL LAND" from our mouths which Beth had done.

After watching that episode I went online to get more information about the show. Apparently the show took a hiatus back in 2007 after Dog had used racial slurs in a phone conversation with his son due to his son's girlfriend being black. Yeah... no more reruns and relieved this show is canceled.

People who hate him need to judge themselves first.
The_Light_Triton3 August 2009
Everyone has made a few mistakes in their life. Duane Chapman has made too many to count. one day, he finally decided that it was time to clear the slate, and do something good with his life. so in short, he became a bounty hunter.

Just what does a bounty do? He goes out into his respective territory, and finds people who have jumped bail. (people who have not shown up for their court date) and he tracks them down all over Hawaii. At the same time, he deals with people High on ice, people who don't like his kind, and his own family.

Now, there's a lot of people who don't like the dog because he might be somewhat of a hypocrite (he claims to be a Christian, but swears, makes racial slurs and takes the lord's name in vain sometimes) and that he belongs in jail, but those people who hate him need to judge themselves. they are no better, nor worse than the dog.

Some people like to call his wife a fat pig with enormous breasts. sure thats true, beth is much bigger than the average woman, but remember, she can take most of us down. Never forget that. and yes, her 'blessings' are much bigger than the average blessing as well...and she can flaunt it all she wants, they're hers.

I've only found one con while watching dog. He lets his daughter Baby Lyssa in on the chases. while I might sound sexist by saying that, but when his daughter is dumb enough to try to arrest a guy much bigger than her WITHOUT handcuffs, then that's putting his own daughter in jeopardy like that. and then after, Lyssa goes and cries to Beth. somehow, if you're going to play with the boys, you'd better be ready to take a beating or two.

Bottom line, I like watching this show every time that it's on, so i guess that makes it good in my eyes.

Nothing real about reality TV
awm-1258027 November 2020
First off, those that think this show is real needs to get a grip on reality. There is nothing ever real about reality TV. It's all scripted in total or partial. I have both a video production and law enforcement background. I see so many flaws in the way things are handled, from outright stupidity on the "bounty hunters" part to outright illegalities. The last episode I watched they "called" 911 and then told whoever on the team to call them back and tell them never mind. It does not work that way. Also, why are the camera people so close to the action? No matter who a bounty hunter or law enforcement person is about to arrest, you have to assume they are armed and dangerous until proven otherwise. But not in this show. The camera people are up close and personal, kinda like they know there is no danger? Ever wonder why if someone they are about to take down is so dangerous, why they don't just call the police and let them do it? Maybe because they are just acting?

Greatest Reality Series On TV!
hydeeddie6 October 2004
Dog The Bounty Hunter is a show about a family who lives and works together. They own and operate a bail bonding company called Da Kine (The Best) Bail Bonds in Hawaii. The show follows Duane "Dog" Chapman, his wife Beth, his son Leland, his nephew Justin and a close friend who he considers a brother, Tim Chapman (no relation). The main focus of the show is "The Posse" track customers who "skip" bail on them and must be captured and turned in to the police otherwise they do not collect their bond. When the customers "skip" on them, Dog and crew track down the "fugitives" and "bring them to justice" all while juggling a home and family life. The main reason I enjoyed the show is due to the fact that this show brings an up-close-and-personal view of what "bail enforcement agents" really have to do just to make ends meet and still try to live a normal suburbanite family life.
