Director Jean Durand and the actor Ernest Bourbon made a ton of Onésime films together. About a dozen of them are included in the "Gaumont Treasures Volume Two" collection. Some of them were quite good, though I noticed the later ones on the disc were not so good--"Onésime, Tu l'Epousersa Quand Même" is one of these weaker ones.
The film begins with a clearly insane and utterly ridiculous idea--Onésime wants to enter a marriage lottery. In other words, he'll buy tickets and if he wins, he gets a wife--sight unseen!!! Clearly this one of the dumber and most contrived plots I can think of. When he wins (of course), he learns that he's won(?) an old and rather unattractive woman. When they go to get married, he can't bring himself to do it and runs. Much of the rest of the film consists of a Durand trademark--the chase. In the end, in a contrived twist, he learns he actually won someone else (huh?!).
The plot makes no sense whatsoever. The story really isn't funny. And, it is yet another chase film. Not a lot to recommend this one other than the great bicycle stunts by Bourbon--as he clearly did them himself.
