Likable but inconsistent
KALE80817 December 2007
Based on the low score at Rotten Tomatoes I expected very little from this film. Maybe it's a testament to the likability of its stars Mila Kunis and Ben Gourley, but I found myself smiling more than a few times during this road trip flick. The production value and cinematography are definitely a cut above.

Sometimes I'm troubled that somewhat self-indulgent movies like this can attract such talented production crews when perhaps more important, but less trendy stories, never see the light of day. But still, I like escapist fare like this sometimes and it's hard to really put a value on art.

If you're having a slow night, this will prove an entertaining diversion.

halfhearted but still fairly enjoyable comedy
Buddy-5121 May 2010
Eager to score points with his boss (Rutger Hauer), law intern Rick Robinson (Ben Gourley) - who hails from Kansas and looks for all the world like Clark Kent - agrees to drive the old man's free-spirited niece, Michelle (Mila Kunis), from Savannah to L.A., and still make it back to Miami in time to take his bar exam. But Michelle has other plans in mind, and she's not about to make it easy for the uptight, highly regimented young man - whom she believes needs to learn how to let his freak flag fly and just enjoy life - to complete his mission.

Though the opposites-attract, road-trip-from-hell premise is far from original, "Moving McAllister" has enough charm, wit and affability to keep it just this side of entertaining. The performances are winning (with Jon Heder particularly effective as a spacey, zonked-out hitchhiker the couple picks up on their way), and writer Gourley and director Andrew Black have provided a series of loopy dream sequences that help lift the movie out of its picaresque rut. Some of the detours are more enjoyable than others, and the ending lacks credibility and conviction, but the lighthearted tone makes up for most of the movie's deficiencies and shortcomings.

Standard Self Discovery Film
wastebot16 January 2008
Rutger Hauer helps along a film that basically can be summed up in the young person finding themselves category, and rather obviously so, so it needs a lot of help.

The beginning holds a lot more promise, of a film that could turn into Michael Clayton or Stranger Than Fiction. It's too bad because I really got hooked into the beginning. Then, like the opening soundtrack, it went from great and intriguing to basically nowhere.

It's fun enough with plenty of curiosities and interesting characters acted well. I'm sure that will be enough for many people. The problem is it all feels contrived and empty which, ironically, is supposed to be the main discovery for the character's self realization. Not the film itself (it's not a self aware film), but that the character is supposed to recognize his own life is contrived and empty.

I Know Exactly Why This Movie Was Made
Fritz_Gerlich22 March 2008
This movie was made because the concept translates well into a two sentence summary that can be used to lure investors. That is, the premise is interesting and sellable. I mean, I rented it based on the synopsis. The problem is there is nothing beyond the initial concept. There is no coherent plot, no fully fledged characters, no real comedy, no interesting scenery, no surprises, and no good performances (except Jon Herder, he does something with very little). It's as if the people who green lit this thing never read the script but only the synopsis. And if there were enough people like me, it may even have made money.

To the prospective viewer: don't waste your time, there is nothing funny or interesting to see here. To the creators of the film: hey, you got your film made, so what if its not that great. Most people never get to see themselves or their work up on screen.

Kill Me
n181522 January 2008
If only the writer/producer/"star" had the slightest inkling of the limits of his acting range, and the way he is perceived on-screen (wearing glasses and a side-parting is not enough to make you look gawky and quirky if your face and teeth have been sculpted by various medical professionals to conform to American ideals of generic, characterless symmetry, erroneously perceived as beauty in this obsessively superficial society) he would have cast John Heder as the main character instead of attempting to pull a Good-Will-Hunting and create a vehicle to showcase his... his... well, himself.

The excellent supporting cast (Lord knows, they must be having problems to agree to this) is wasted in an agonising perpetual struggle to react convincingly to a main character incapable of delivering even the simplest line with appropriate intonation, and believe me, he is not short of simple lines to choose from, as the dialogue appears to have been composed by a five-year-old. Ah wait... it's the same person pretending to be a writer as pretending to be an actor. It's not often that I don't see a film through to the end, but this ejaculation was irredeemable from the outset and showed no signs of improving after the first hour. Excrement.

Frustrating
charlesdias20 December 2007
Romantic comedy movies are definitely the most fertile genre for "bellow from average" movies and source of frustration for viewers. This one is a perfect example of this and got a place in my "top ten worst movies".

History is far from creative and jokes are weak. I found no reason for a single laugh during all the movie! Characters are plain and the performance of the actors and just good. History develops slowly, it's tedious and foreseeable. Ending is also foreseeable and sugar-coated.

This is one that movies you watch in a rainy Saturday afternoon when you have nothing better to watch in my humble opinion.

A Waste of Film and Time
srthompson-13 February 2008
This movie had so much potential to be hilarious yet moving but fell way short of either. It had a great story line, it just was not executed as good as it could have been. The weird "hallucinations" during his sleep scenes made absolutely no sense and definitely was not needed, they made no impact nor did they enhance or lend any understanding of what was to come or happen.

Jon Heder's character was OK but could have been expanded upon more. He played the crappy part he was given at his best. The character was funny, but again, it fell short of what could have been.

Mila's character was perfect and her performance was spot on.

In closing, the writing was horrible and more often than not, made no sense and his hallucinations did not fit with the movie at all. This movie, with better scripting and directing, could have been a contender to National Lampoon's Vacation as far as funny, bad things happening to a person on a trip across America.

Instead, it was only worthy of a second "flush". If I would have seen this at the theater, I would have demanded my money back and boycotted the film.

The only thing that this film did was waste an hour and a half of my life. It also managed to make all those involved in the movie look bad, simply because the movie was a stinker.

I do not recommend this movie to anyone! Ever!

Fun, clean, romantic adventure.
dahstra25 November 2007
I was very happy about the choices for character casting. Everyone became their part, seeming very comfortable. Our two main characters had very good chemistry. The intermittent characters were given enough focus and detail so that you easily remember them.

It was amusing to follow the characters through all of their adventures. Most of the subplots were rooted in humor, but there were also some dramatic family elements that I felt were well balanced.

Some of the jokes were gross, but still funny. They easily avoided inappropriate language and situations leaving this film an easy pick for teens.

Can't wait for the DVD!

Waste of a hot babe, linear mind numbingly unfunny road-trip movie.
dilbertsuperman30 December 2007
Rutger Hower fans Don't BE FOOLED - he only plays a cameo in this movie and that's IT. This movie loses an extra point for that scam. I think Rutger Hower has a total of about 2 very short scenes and 2 very short voice-overs.

The female lead for this film is way above this poor material in looks and talent-she's great, this movie is a dog and she's wasted on it. The story is of a Lawyer hoping for that partnership one day at the firm getting suckered into having to cart the Boss' niece across country. They have several encounters on the road with various oddballs and that is the vehicle for a variety of skits and the dude that played Napoleon Dynamite is thrown in the mix as a side character for good measure.

This is a road-trip where extreme circumstances put our repressed hero to the test and he slowly winds up loosening up a little bit by the end of the movie, ah isn't love grand, yadda yadda..

Only watch this film if you want to see a hot chick be annoying to a dork in a truck for an hour and half.

A complete waste of time
Huck_Haines17 August 2017
I won't say this is the worst movie I've ever seen, but if you want to I certainly wouldn't argue with you.

Virtually no plot, and where there is one, it is insipid. The idea of a cross-country road trip is nothing new, but it at least is a good premise for funny things to happen. Unfortunately, nothing funny ever happens.

The acting is not good either. I got the impression they knew they were in a bad movie and just didn't try.

Save yourself the trouble and just skip this one.

not bad

Warning: Spoilers
With only days to go until the Bar exam, an intern suck up agrees to take a crate and his boss's niece across country to LA and in the process finds himself.

Its a standard tale of a self discovery where the lead character finds himself and love done with just a touch of quirkiness so that the whole affair is lifted a little bit out of the "been there and done that" pile. I had seen the trailer too many times on the front of Magnolia DVDs and was curious enough to try it when I found it at the local Blockbuster. I was a tad disappointed because the trailer was better, but at the same time I was amused. Honestly this isn't anything that you haven't seen before, but at the same time the cast makes this worth seeing if you should stumble on upon it. Sure you're going to know where its going but at the same time it does amuse. Will you need to see it a second time? Probably not but while its on its worth a look.

Not a great movie, but it is watchable.
robert_cave7 November 2020
It kills some time and what better way to kill it than by watching Mila Kunis. She is very pretty. So it wasn't that good and the roadside "adventures" were batsh** crazy.......but in a way I kinda like it. However I don't expect I'll ever watch it again.

Awful Movie...Very painful to watch!
waouthwaite6 July 2009
Simply put this movies is without any substance whatsoever. Just take my word for it and save yourself the time it is a complete DUD!! I would say the characters are one dimensional but that would imply there was some sort of character development. I thought Eric Roberts was going to jump out any second it was so close to B-Movie status.

The girl from That 70's is beautiful...but unless you are a stalker type fan of hers this movie has nothing for anyone.

Avoid..Avoid...Avoid

This movie was straight to DVD for a reason...that being...it is a train wreck!!!

Warning: Spoilers
Wasn't a perfect movie but I thought it was worth watching. Makes you feel good about it. Don't be turn away by a bad review from someone who did not like that movie. It is an honest love story about a love that went from a mutual relationship to something more as they were together. I actually thought it was good. The main characters obvious transformation from a hard working, diligent straight forward no-nonsense worker nerd to a model-esquire handsome guy without his nerdy thick rimmed glasses was actually really cool. The pictures Michelle takes throughout the movie set up for the ending really nicely that could possibly choke you just a little bit if you paid enough attention to it throughout. Some sub-characters did not have enough time to develop. Maybe a longer movie with more depth could of helped this movie's ratings overall

A bad trip
MihaiSorinToma16 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A law intern wants to impress his boss before his Bar Exam so he offers to help his daughter by moving her and her pet pig to the other end of the country. A lot of things happen in the meantime that will make the main character change his perception over life and discover true love along the way.

A bad movie from the beginning to the end. A pointless and average plot that features a series of weird events that have no meaning whatsoever. Not to say that the end is as bad as the rest, the main character finally realizing out of nowhere that he loves the girl who's been escorting throughout the entire journey.

Luckily it had few entertaining moments that made me laugh, otherwise it would have received a really bad rating.

Great movie, interesting photography, predictable plot
aajl-117 February 2008
I just happened on this movie and rented it. I did not hear too much ahead of time about this movie - and it was surprisingly good! Although the plot seemed like it was predictable, it took so many twists and turns that it was good. I liked two things about this movie - the characters - three characters in this movie were quite likable/unlikeable. The actors were great and portrayed their characters perfectly. I also liked the filmography. The angles, the lighting, the dream sequences were really well done! I found it refreshing that this movie was good, clean, fun - no violence, no sex, only characters that you grow on you.

I absolutely LOVED this movie!!

If you are looking for something entertaining watch this!!!

I found myself laughing my butt off more than once. The road trip scene was great.

I never take the time to write these kind of things, but I felt this movie really deserved it! I might have to go as far as to say.............. one of the best movies I've seen to date!

I thought I might like it, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I really did enjoy watching it

Don't miss this one, it's definitely worth your time :) Watch it and enjoy!!!

Well, I'm not a lesbian but... who wouldn't fall in love with Mila?
alexisarthurs10 February 2008
I found it refreshing to watch a new take on romantic comedy. It was the most realistic and believable love story full of characters that are so well played that you get to know everybody by the end. It definitely made me rethink the whole superman clark kent stigma. I say watch it! Especially if you are looking for something for to enjoy with friends, family, or even with your boyfriend/to be.

Be prepared to laugh, cry and ask yourself WHAT? I loved all of the characters and this is the first movie that I have seen John Heder in, that I didn't constantly remember napoleon dynamite as him. Great job guys! Hope to see more movies like this soon

I loved this movie! Anyone know where to buy the soundtrack or more particularly the "Swans" song? Mila Kunis was awesome, as usual. Jon Heder was funny. The main character was a little dorky in the beginning, but by the end I thought he was kind of cute...even with the dorky glasses. I loved this movie!
