Zimmer 1408 bietet auf der einen Seite den klassischen Ablauf des "haunted-house-genre": Charaktereinführung, Ankunft am Objekt der Begierde, allmähliche Anzeichen paranormaler Aktivitäten gefolgt von dem (endlich) ungenierten auftreten der Geisterwelt, bis der Spuk dann schließlich in einem großen Knall endet. Dieses Schema wird überraschend kurzweilig abgeklappert, was ich dem Film anrechne, wobei dieses Muster dann leider den Hauptdarsteller (John Cusack) über weite Teile des Films zum Geisterbahnführer degradiert, dessen Aktionen nur noch teilweise nachzuvollziehen sind und mehr dem Wechsel des "Settings" dienen. Das ist umso ärgerlicher, da 1408 viel Potential besitzt, etwas größeres als ein Spuk auf die Schnelle zu sein. Das erste Problem sind die inneren Dämonen von John Cusack's Charakter, die äußerst unzureichend dargestellt wurden und somit ziemlich egal und eine Last am Bein sind. Das Trauma aus der Vergangenheit wirkt mehr wie ein vorgefertigtes Puzzleteil aus dem Horror-Drehbuchkasten für Dummys, als der eigentliche Ursprung für Cusack's Handeln. Genauso wie der Hintergrund des Autors: Diese Geschichte mit dem alten Roman, an das sich vereinzelte Personen im Film gerne erinnern und die Anbiederung an Trivialliteratur leise bedauern. Man hätte aus diesen ganzen Ansätzen einen anspruchsvollen Horrorfilm schustern können, wenn man sie genügend vertieft und nicht nur angeschnitten hätte. So bleibt ein "normaler" Film, der dank seiner Kurzweiligkeit, vielversprechenden Ansätzen und einem drastischen Ende knapp über der Durchschnittskost landet. Nichts grausam langweiliges à la "The Haunting", aber auch kein Highlight à la "Poltergeist". Mehr so auf dem unterhaltenden "House on Haunted Hill" Level.
