Fear Is an Illusion
claudio_carvalho23 January 2008
The food writers Jane (Kathy Bates) and Michael Stern (Robin Thomas) have been married for thirty-three years, they love each other, but Jane is feeling insecure, depressed and with phobia, while Michael has been sober for three years. Jane decides to change her life getting her fears out of her head, and is encouraged by Michael to join the training of E.M.T. in the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department. Nobody believes in the clumsy Jane, but she concludes the training period and applies to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and gets her certificate. She begins to work to Grafton Volunteer Fire Department, affecting her personal life and the long relationship with Michael.

"Ambulance Girl" is a nice movie with a great message and a fantastic performance of Kathy Bates. The story is well-balanced between comedy and drama, showing that we should resolve our innermost problems because "Fear is like a hologram. It seems real, filled with substance. And then, when you go beyond it, you realize it is just an illusion." My vote is seven.

Wooly Bully
sh33na24 September 2005
That song was "Wooly Bully," by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.

I hope this is a pilot that turns into a series. Kathy Bates is always good, and this TV movie is no exception.

I could identify with her throwing herself whole-heartedly into whatever she chose, especially the medical things. Some of us do that. Finding something that feels like your life has purpose is important, but so is not taking yourself too seriously.

This was a good Lifetime movie, worth watching. It won't keep you riveted to your seat, but it will take you nicely along a comfortable path with great scenery.

Kathy Bates Any Time, Any Thing!
mcdougaller24 September 2005
I have always felt that when Kathy Bates appears on screen, the whole medium lights up. She has the Midas touch in films. "Ambulance Girl" may not be the most serious subject matter in the world, it tries to cross genres and be both serious and funny, but it works and I went with the funny. Kathy has a scene where she's trying on Ebay-purchased EMT gear, wreathed in delight, and dancing to James Brown music, I think it was. HILARIOUS! She must be quite a person to know up close and personal. I liked the fact that, for once, weight was not an issue. How refreshing, how free! Kathy looks adorable in her flannel pajamas, her robe and slippers, even in her supposedly serious bout with anxiety attacks and depression. I loved seeing her slumped on the couch, falling off absentmindedly! Also enjoyable was her self-help on the airliner when, afflicted with a numbing panic attack, she escaped her own symptoms by coming to the aid of a young diabetic passenger who had hit a low and who needed Kathy's sugar fix. I could watch Kathy Bates forever, just going through a normal day and doing what she does. It is a tribute to her magnetism that so many others feel this way, too. May her future hold many more roles, both funny and powerful. She is a great dramatic actress. Her range has never been fully explored in the cinema. Let us see what more she can do - and do magnificently! More Oscars for Kathy!

not so good

Warning: Spoilers
I thought the first half was OK, but then it went downhill. Would someone like her really get accepted to be an EMT? After the stupid antics she displayed , bashing around the dummy, dropping the guy in the chair on the stairs? Her husband was cold and uncaring and so jealous, didn't like his character at all. When she went on her first call and banged the old lady on the floor, just wasn't that funny. I think Kathy did what she could with this role though. She's a great actress. I didn't think the old guy added too much to the film either. Did we find out if he died? I did think it was nice when she got the secretary position. But yeah, I would have liked to see her kick her hubby out to the curb.

Wooly Bully and Kathy Bates!!

This movie is so relatable. Years ago when I was in nursing school, I went through EMT training. I remember feeling some of those same emotions. Kathy Bates portrayed her first call and the self- doubt that came with just perfectly. The wondering if and what you did wrong, the every weekend Saturday morning work detail, the excitement when you finally get something right and save someone, and the realization that you can really help people. Then comes the self confidence along with the knowledge and skill level that makes it difficult not to get lost in what you're doing. Kathy Bates did a good job a playing a part that I think many people can see themselves in.

Kathy Bates makes this very watchable
juneebuggy2 November 2014
This was quite good, but Cathy Bates always is. She's funny and relatable here in a heartwarming and bittersweet story of a long term marriage going through some changes. Bates plays an anxiety ridden food writer who experiences a sort of mid life crises and decides to become an EMT despite her fear of (among other things) closed spaces -like the back of an ambulance.

Nobody including 'Jane' believes she'll make it through the training and her struggles provide the comic relief here. When Jane receives her certificate and joins the volunteer fire department it causes problems within her marriage and recently sober husband. This made for TYV movie is based on actual events and was also directed by Bates. 02.12.14

Nobody can (handle it) until you have to do it.

Warning: Spoilers
That's what the character of Jane Stern (the Emmy nominated Kathy Bates) hears when she contemplates resigning from her job as an EMT in a small community, already having had a career as a recipe book writer and TV host alongside recovering alcoholic husband Robin Thomas. With his recovery comes her depression, and she decides that she needs to do something to get back into life. But her success in changing her life doesn't aide in improving her marriage, so the struggles are just beginning.

Directing this as well as starring, Bates shows that she's a miracle woman in gaining the success and respect in spite of not being the average glamorous movie star. But even in the worst of her characters, she always finds that one element to make them human, and Jane Stern has many elements that makes the audience once again want to know these people. Bates is reading passages from the real Jane Stern's book with a voice so calming and nurturing that memories of nurse Annie Wilkes from "Misery" just disappear. Thomas is perfect as her equally troubled husband, making the viewer understand his depression growing as hers disappears. A good movie worth seeing and filled with warmth and hope.

REALLY enjoyed this movie.

Have been a fan of Kathy Bates for some time.

Loved the story line, actors/actresses and the ending...won't tell you what it was, because it would ruin it for you.

Saw it on Tubi

Another great performance by Kathy Bates
Rose1888212 September 2005
I really enjoyed this quirky show. I hope that it stays on the air, Kathy Bates is such a great actress. I really enjoyed the hunky Robin Thomas as her husband too. Thanks for such a great show!!

Parts of the show were a bit predictable, but being in the medical field myself, I could relate to some of the story lines.

We need more shows on TV like this one, she was a bit sarcastic and very realistic to the part.

The man that plays her mentor as an EMT was a very good actor also, I don't know his name off-hand, but he was good.

Please keep this show on, since my favorite Judging Amy has been cancelled, I have been looking for a new show to follow!!

Another superb performance by Kathy Bates
skipper-5131 December 2005
I worked as an EMT and I now work in a related field supplying EMS agencies with specialized medical products for use mainly with babies. I have a lot of contact with small town EMS personnel and I feel they captured her role and lifestyle quite well. There were some "Hollywood moments" but overall this was very entertaining and believable. Small town volunteers need more recognition for the sacrifices and dedication involved with supporting a community! I would love to see more shows like this because the large agencies (NYFD, LAFD, etc) get a lot of media attention and as important and heroic as these people are, there are many, many more small community heroes and heroines who deserve the same recognition.

Good Message Movie
magicofmovies11 July 2006
This movie really spoke to me about fear and change and how they can affect our lives. There is a classic line in the movie about fear. I have quoted it, not word for word, on various occasions. "Fear is like a hologram. It seems full of substance and depth until you move through it and discover it is an illusion." What a line! The entire movie was about changing and redefining and adding dimensions to life in spite of fear. Kathy Bates was a perfect person to put in that part because she is easy to relate to as an everyday ordinary person who wants to feel needed and validated. The comedy and human drama was just the right mix without being slapstick or maudlin. Kathy and Robin do a great job convincing us of the love and fear in their relationship. Watching them grow and discover themselves was really a treat.
