Every week-day, several cases are presented in the 'People's Court' before either Judge Rhonda Anderson or Jerome Lynch, not judges in real-life but people with vast legal experience behind them. The case is played out before a live studio audience as well as you at home, who ultimately decide the verdict by phoning or texting your votes in.And, whether the claimants win or lose, they can always be comforted afterwards by Smiley Smiley Carol Smilee, here appearing much more attractive than anything I've seen her in before.
Daytime TV, as I've said before, is a wearisomely dull thing, with mostly just This Morning, the news, inane chat-shows and repeats clogging it up like tar in the lungs of a smoker. So when this new show came out and hit me like a bolt out the blue, it made it's impact. There have been unsuccessful attempts at this sort of thing before (Today with Des and Mel) but I'm quite getting in to this. You can basically either see it as a rip-off or a spin-on America's fairly successful Judge Judy show.
Anderson and Lynch are lively, charismatic choices to select for the show who it's easy to relate on a level with and who make the proceedings as lively as they can be. Likewise Smilee knows what she's doing as the presenter and coasts through it treating the viewers and those involved in the case to her particular brand of upfront style. Though you have to pity the monotony of Kevin the Usher's job. He basically has to repeat the same lines over and over again ('all rise', 'people's court is now in session', 'we do,your honour' et al) and go through more-or-less the same rigmarole every time. Can't be the most stimulating job in the world and you can just see him ebbing for something more fun to happen.
On the downside, the presentation of the show feels a bit too dynamic (like it's crime of the century as opposed to just some small claims claim!) and only one or two of the defendants/claimants have been truly memorable (like the bingo caller that one time "THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRTY TWO".........hahahahahahaha.) But it's certainly a pleasing diversion from all the usual junk and loan adverts that serve to stimulate the mind on TV during the daytime and I hope it runs on for a bit longer yet!***
