Zombies often take the horror-comedy to a new level. In their shambling quest to mine humor from the most horrific circumstances, zombie comedies invert the apocalyptic nihilism that an outbreak of the undead tends to elicit. They also subvert the expectations of zombie horror, frequently going meta to poke fun at some of the most time honored tropes.
Because it’s Monday, we could all use a laugh or three. So, this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to zombie comedies that aim not for the jugular (or brain) but your funny bone.

The Tim Burtonesque depiction of suburbia, full of quirky characters and pastel colors, signals a very different type of horror movie in The Loneliest Boy in the World. One freak accident further isolates the timid and lonely Oliver (Max Harwood), sparking a desperate quest for friendship. He finds it in death, creating a sweet coming-of-age fairy tale in the vein of 2006 zombie-comedy Fido.
Oliver lives a reclusive life in the suburbs with his mother. He never ventures much outside the home, finding companionship through her and his beloved sitcom Alf. That changes when a wild series of events leaves mom dead, impaled on a garden gnome, and Oliver at the mercy of a social worker, Margot (Ashley Benson). The social worker is concerned with Oliver’s isolation and mental well-being, giving him a finite timeline to find friends before she intervenes. He takes her words to heart and unearths the recently buried,...

Also known as “The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale”, Zombie For Sale, released through Arrow Video a couple of weeks ago, is a zombie horror comedy with elements of romance tossed in for good measure. If you’re thinking, however, “oh no, not another zom-rom-com” then think again, because this isn’t a run of the mill romance with zombies. It has plenty of original and unique things going on to make it very different from anything else you would have seen in the genre, and it makes for an absolute joy of a film.
I was unsure what to expect when I went into this one, but in the end I found myself thoroughly besotted with it. It’s hilarious, cute, charming and looks delightful too. The cast throw themselves, feet-first, into...

Apple executive Craig Federighi had a little fun with the thousands of developers arrayed before him on Monday morning. Maybe iTunes should add a calendar function? Or contacts? How about a dock? Heck, they'd already tried a social-media component multiple times, though he didn't mention that.
Anyway, Federighi was just teasing. Instead, Apple used the opening session of Apple's World Wide Developers Conference to confirm the rumors: Apple is chopping up its oversized content-management app into three sleek and focused successors: Music, Apple TV and Apple Podcasts. The company also launched technology to allow companies to quickly convert their iPad apps for desktop use, rolled out a new operating system just for iPads, and continued laying bets that more privacy will be more attractive to many customers.
All these moves likely will shake up the ways millions of people use their computers, phones, tablets and the Internet as a whole.

Over the past decade-plus, we’ve seen the zombie subgenre of horror further split into three sub-tiers: Outbreak, aftermath, and reconstruction. When it comes to horror comedy, we’ve seen the outbreak in Shaun of the Dead and the reconstruction in Fido. But is there a horror comedy that represents the immediate aftermath of a zombie apocalypse? Fringe, Supernatural, Bob's Burgers... zombies pop up in all kinds of surprising places. Remember that time Ramsay Street was invaded?
Back in the 80s and 90s, the only groups regularly enjoying zombie movies were habitually stoned students, young lads looking to prove their mettle by lobbing VHS grenades of gore at each other's minds, and great sweating giants with mutton-chops corseted into two-sizes-too-small Iron Maiden T-shirts. Very few couples partook of the genre; liver-ripping and eye-gouging was rarely seen as the essential romantic complement to an evening entwined on the couch.
Aside from George A Romero’s satirical side-swipes at society, the majority of zombie movies were gloriously nasty, schlocky yuck-fests, with names like ‘Return Of The Great Zombie Intenstine Carnival III’, 'Zombies! Zombies, Oh, Christ Zombies, They're Eating My Eyes!' and ‘I Claw-hammered My Zombie Grandma’S Head Off’. Anyone with access to a video camera,...

Let's get one thing straight: George A. Romero isn't particularly thrilled with the zombie renaissance in general. "I don't get it," he responded when asked during a Q&A at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival. "I honestly don't. First of all, I'm a little pissed off because I used to be the only guy and now everybody's in my playground." Often called the "godfather (sometimes grandfather) of the zombies," the director ushered in not only the modern zombie film but the modern horror film with his 1968 classic "Night of the Living Dead," which he followed up with five sequels (and counting?). So what does he think of all the movies (and TV show[s]) he influenced with his low-budget B&W masterpiece? With Romero's recent lambasting of AMC's "The Walking Dead" and the Brad Pitt vehicle "World War Z" making making the rounds, we thought it was time to collect his opinions...

You can’t blame people today for wanting to get away from it all. Sometimes nothing sounds more appealing than retreating to a remote cabin in the mountains for some rest and relaxation. Shut off the phones and other electronic devices, or just leave them at home. However, it you are going to do this, have a contingency plan for emergency purposes. You never know when a blizzard could keep you stuck in cabin, completely cut off from the outside world.
In Fido director Andrew Currie and WWE Studios' Barricade, Terrence Shade (Eric McCormack) has decided to get out of the city and take his two kids to a remote cabin (which is really a very large house even though people continuously refer to it as a cabin).
A year prior Terrence and young Cynthia (Conner Dwelly) and Jake (Ryan Grantham) lost their wife/mother. She desperately wanted to have...

A father’s quiet retreat to the woods with his two children turns into a fight for survival in Barricade. From the director of the zombie comedy Fido comes this scary-looking PG-13 horror film.
There is an interesting free app the makers of Barricade are using to market this film. It allows you to play with Augmented Reality technology.
Here’s a video showing how to trigger Augmented Reality for WWE’s Barricade:
For seasoned actor Eric McCormack, the role of Terrance Shade was one of the most challenging of his career. Appearing in virtually every scene, it was both a physically and emotionally demanding role for McCormack. As a busy psychiatrist, Terrance is struggling to adjust to life as a widowed father whose main concern is the safety and well-being of his young children. Word has come from the great video gods in the sky that WWE Studios' new film Barricade is set to make its DVD premiere on September 25th! Yep, that's next week! Short notice, we know, but ghosts have a habit of showing up unannounced.
Fido director Andrew Currie helms Barricade for WWE Studios with "Will & Grace" star Eric McCormack toplining the supernatural thriller from writer Michaelbrent Collings. A holiday in the mountains is an opportunity for the Shade family to accept their tragic loss and start anew. Little do they know they’ll all be tested in unimaginable ways.

"We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connolly, the Big Yin himself," said Jackson in an official press release. "With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of 'The Hobbit' is now complete. We can’t wait to see him on the Battlefield!”
Connolly's casting comes after Jackson has already...

News of the latest addition to One Shot, Richard Jenkins, came only a few days ago, and yet there’s already a new name to add to the list. As THR tells us, Alexia Fast will appear in the Lee Child adaptation as “Sandy, a seductive young siren involved in a setup of [Tom] Cruise’s character.” Most of the actresses’ credits up this point are either for television shows or TV movies, so the name or face may not ring any bells. (There was a role in the 2006 zombie film Fido, although I’m not sure if anyone has really seen that.)
Joining One Shot will likely boost her profile, though, since she’s sharing a screen with the aforementioned Cruise and Jenkins, while also having an impressive supporting lineup that includes David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike. Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, shooting is set to kick off next month,...

WWE Studios, which was born WWE Films in 2002 and then took on its new name in 2008, is probably a non-entity to people who aren't fans of wrestling and the men who are (or were) stars in that sphere. But the company is now preparing to make a movie that doesn't star a wrestler, and the picture will be directed by someone who has made a movie with a well-deserved, if minor cult following. Eric McCormack (Will & Grace, The New Adventures of Old Christine) will star in Barricade, which is set to be directed by Andrew Currie. He last made Fido, in which Billy Connolly played a housepet zombie. THR [1] says "the supernatural thriller centers on a psychiatrist, seeking to find normalcy after the sudden passing of his wife, who takes his two kids to a remote cabin for healing and bonding. Eric McCormack has been cast in the the upcoming supernatural thriller Barricade from WWE Studios. This casting will be the first time the company is making a picture that doesn’t star one of its macho WWE stars.
Barricade is being directed by Andrew Currie (Fido), which will shoot in and around Vancouver later this month. The script was written by Michaelbrent Collings and centers on "a psychiatrist, seeking to find normalcy after the sudden passing of his wife, who takes his two kids to a remote cabin for healing and bonding. Their joy soon turns to despair when the family is terrorized by unknown forces and the father will stop at nothing to save them from peril."
Conner Dwelly and Ryan Grantham are in talks to star as the two kids in the film being financed by WWE Studios. WWE's Michael Pavone, David Calloway, andLori Lewis are the producers.

Eric McCormack ("Trust Me") is starring in Barricade, the latest film from WWE Studios (you know, the guys behind See No Evil, and a little thing called "wrestling"). The deal marks the first time the company is making a picture that doesnt star one of its WWE superstars. What's exciting about this project is that it'll put Fido director Andrew Currie back behind the camera in Vancouver later this month. Okay, okay, yes I know, this is a WWE Studios production and uh, no one likes those movies (do they?). But there's a reason why I'm writing about this - directing Barricade, the new supernatural thriller (yea) from WWE is Andrew Currie, the Canadian filmmaker behind that great zombie indie Fido that we featured on the site years ago. He's been off-and-on projects for a while since Fido was released in '07, so it's good to see him finally directing something. Barricade will shoot in and around Vancouver starting this month with TV actor Eric McCormack ("Lonesome Dove", "Will & Grace", "Trust Me" - seen above) starring. More below. Andrew Currie of Fido is back with something a little less tongue-in-cheek than his zombie comedy. He's gearing up to direct Barricade for WWE Films ( See No Evil ) in Vancouver this month and he's bringing along Eric McCormack ( Will & Grace ) to star. McCormack plays a widowed psychiatrist who retreats to a cabin in the woods with his kids until they come under siege by "unknown forces." Michaelbrent Collings scripted the story.

WWE Studios launched in 2006 with the slasher flick See No Evil. Since then they've produced terrible action movies, middling dramas, and cringe-inducing comedies. Barricade will mark World Wrestling Entertaiment's return to horror, and this time odds are the movie won't end with a dog peeing into a corpse's eye socket.
The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog brings word that Fido director Andrew Currie will direct Barricade for WWE Studios with "Will & Grace" star Eric McCormack set to topline the supernatural thriller from writer Michaelbrent Collings.

John Cena. Mr Kennedy. Steve Austin. Eric McCormack. One of these things is not like the others. Did you figure it out? Yes, McCormack is the erstwhile star of Will & Grace and not a featured member of the World Wrestling Entertainment family. We're not even sure he watches wrestling. But he has, however, won the lead in the company’s new film, Barricade. It would appear that the WWE team is looking to break free of the idea that it only casts wrestlers as the stars of its movies and has struck a deal with McCormack for the supernatural thriller.Fido’s Andrew Currie is calling the shots on this one, which will follow a psychiatrist trying to come to terms with the sudden death of his wife. Seeking a little peace and quiet, he takes his kids to a remote cabin in the woods to spend time getting the family back together.

Admittedly, I am obsessed with zombie movies. I talk about them with a level of pretension and fervor most people reserve for discussions of fine wine or jazz. This may be because I am a sucker for some good gore, or because I spend an inordinate amount of time pondering the sociopolitical ramifications of the horror genre – in which zombie flicks play a huge role, or it may be because my hometown is featured in George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead- but my motivation is beyond the point.
The point is that, as an avid fan of zombie movies, I take them very seriously. To that end I’ve broken down my favorite sub-genres within its cycles to present to you The Evolution of Zombies.

Justin Theroux is taking his brand of humor (and Will Arnett) to space. He's also going to be doing it with a romantic comedy twist, says THR. The actor turned writer who penned the scripts for both Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2 has signed on to write a draft of Space Invader for 20th Century Fox. The project, which originally had Fido director Andrew Currie and Arnett, follows the story of a space shuttle janitor who becomes jealous of his astronaut girlfriend and her trip to the international space station with an all-American über-douche. It is based on an original script by Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger, which was reviewed by ScriptShadow (via /Film), who revealed the following plot points below: Doug, the space shuttle janitor, watches helplessly as his astronaut girlfriend heads off on a 3 month International Space Station mission with Stamp Majors, all-American astronaut superstar and philanthropist (think a cross between a real life...

A brand new trailer has been released online for Leaves Of Grass, the pot comedy thriller starring Edward Norton.
The official plot synopsis goes something like this: Norton plays Bill Kincaid, an Ivy League classics professor who returns to rural Oklahoma to bury his dangerously brilliant identical twin brother, only to discover that the brother he believes to have been murdered has lured him home to involve him in a doomed plot against a local drug lord. Before Bill can flee, he's implicated in a murder and his life becomes completely unravelled.
Those savvy among you will have noted the key word in the description is "identical" - yes that's right, Norton will be putting his acting skills to full use by playing dual roles, starring as both brothers. Cue lots of split scenes and classic comedy set-ups.
The film is written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson, who you...

With all the recent posts on the upcoming World Wide Short Film Festival, I will label this a happy co-incidence. Dennis Heaton, the screenwriter of the charming Canadian Zombie picture Fido, directed this short in 2006, and it toured around on the festival circuit for a while, but he recently popped it up publicly online for all to enjoy. It is certainly a fine piece of comedy in which an enthusiastic actor auditions unbeknownst for a snuff film, only to have the filmmakers decide that, well, he is not a good enough actor. Hilarity ensues. Take that, Saw franchise. Full short is after the Jump.

Carrie-Anne Moss is likely best known as the super hot chick in latex from the Matrix films but she is really quite talented. She did a fantastic job in Suspect Zero and in Fido and now she will take on a new thriller called Unthinkable. Carrie-Anne Moss will be joining Samuel L. Jackson in Gregor Jordan’s upcoming action thriller “Unthinkable,” according to MTV Movies.
Although Moss’ camp has not really confirmed anything yet at this stage, it was Jackson who spilled details about her involvement with the project.
Directed by Gregor Jordan, helmer of “Buffalo Soldiers,” the film centers on a black-ops interrogator (Jackson) who teams up with an FBI agent to press a suspect into revealing the locations of three nuclear weapons.
“Since there are so many rules about how you can and can’t interrogate people, they bring my character in,” Jackson told MTV.
Well, it sure seems like a cool project at this stage. Moss recently starred in “Disturbia” and “Fido.” She is currently filming “Hanging Out Hooking Up Falling in Love.”
As for Jackson, he’s currently trying to get his new neighbors to move out in Neil LaBute’s “Lakeview Terrace.

Andrew Currie has the right stuff to direct Space Invader, a Fox Atomic comedy that will star Will Arnett. Arnett also will produce the film along with Peter Principato and Paul Young.
Space centers on Doug Huggins, the son of a NASA legend, who is terrified of flying. When Huggins learns that his girlfriend, a rising aeronautic star, has been chosen to fly to the International Space Station with Stamp, a spaceman who is God's gift to space travel, he must overcome his fears and travel to space to win her back. Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger wrote the script.
Robbie Brenner and John Davis are exec producing.
Canadian helmer Currie is best known for writing and directing the zombie comedy Fido, which received strong notices at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, where Currie found himself being courted by several agencies before finally shacking up with ICM. The movie also screened in January at the Sundance Film Festival and is now in limited release.
