Is Beyonce’s new visual album, Lemonade, a feature film? It’s a 56-minute narrative movie mixing music, documentary and experimental elements. This Womanist fairytale — featuring American Southern, Voodoo and Afrofuturist utopian imagery — is most of all a personal film, though co-directed by seven people, including Beyonce Carter-Knowles herself. (Director, star and something more, Beyonce is redefining authorship. As a black woman, that’s a necessity; she has to rewrite all the rules if she wants to work and evolve in movies.) And, as she gets more personal, she gets more political. "The most disrespected person in

Justified fans have plenty of reasons to look forward to season 5 (which begins Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. Et on FX). Top on the list: Fan favorite Dewey Crowe (Damon Herriman) is back and we’ll be meeting his Florida swamp cousins — led by Darryl Crowe Jr. (Michael Rapaport), this year’s Big Bad. “It’s that sense that they’re carrion birds,” executive producer Graham Yost says. “They come in, they’re invasive, they’re hard to get rid of. We meet essentially all of them in the first episode, then they start coming up to Kentucky and settle on...

Now here's another Hollywood turkey we can sink our teeth in. Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson are animated turkeys in Free Birds, and they are on a quest to go back in time to change the course of history and take turkeys off the holiday menu. And what better timing than Thanksgiving to ruin our joy of our annual feast when it opens November 1st.
Amy Poehler joins the fun as a female turkey along with Lakers basketball player Dwight Howard making his animated feature film debut and popular Spanish radio disc jockey Eddie 'Piolin' Sotelo.
Can we take a bet the classic song "Free Bird" by American southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd will be part of the soundtrack.

Spinning out of Grant Morrison’s Batman and Robin series is Knight and Squire, the British Batman and Robin! But this is no “Dark” Knight, the tone of this mini-series is much lighter and the stories often read like sketches from classic British comedies like the Goodies, Blackadder or Monty Python.
There isn’t really an over-arching story to this book which is instead made up of short stories where Knight & Squire take on fascistic morris dancers, a resurrected Richard III, and both the British Joker and the original Joker. But the stories feel British, both stereotypically in their very British subject matter and in treatment with the dry humour Britain is famous for.
The series is also full of visual jokes such as at the start of the second issue where there’s a character called the Organ Grinder who doesn’t speak and has a talking monkey on...

On Monday, Jan. 14, PBS' "Independent Lens" presents "Soul Food Junkies," a documentary from filmmaker, writer, activist and lecturer Byron Hurt ("Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes").
Hurt grew up eating "soul food" from the African-American Southern tradition: grits and cheese-covered scrambled eggs, buttered biscuits with gravy, bacon, collard greens with ham hocks, fried pork chops, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, fried fish, barbecued chicken and ribs, and candied yams.
While all these dishes are delicious and come from recipes passed down for generations in families, they also can contain large amounts of fat, sugar and salt.
Hurt grew up concerned about the health of his overweight father, who eventually succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 63. One of the risk factors for developing this kind of cancer is a high-fat diet centered on meat.
Worried this same fate was befalling others in the African-American community, Hurt set out to...

Calling Kelli Powers the worst cook in America isn't entirely accurate. The stay-at-home-mom and winner of Food Network's cooking competition, which sets out to find everyday people who are "the best at being the worst" when it comes to preparing food, is actually the most-improved cook in America.
Huffington Post Black Voices invited Kelli to the Sunday dinner table for a quick chat about what her win means, how it feels to no longer be the mom whose dish sits untouched at potlucks and what she's whipping up for her family this week.
How do you explain to people what being the "worst cook in America" is?:
The winner of "Worst Cooks In America" is actually the most improved cook in America, which I think is great [because] it really sends a message out to people that just because you're bad at something doesn't mean you will always be bad at it.

This past week my social media has been buzzing in intermittent spurts -- not unlike those periodic spats on Bravo's reality TV show Shahs of Sunset when spoiled brat Gg goes nuclear on underdogs Asa or Anita over which 'ho' (one of lead actor Reza's favorite nouns, his mother must be proud) wears H&M or whose gaudy overpriced outfit came off a heaven-forbid sales rack. Indeed much of Episode Three, "Champagne Wars," is dedicated to correcting Gg's clothing-related meltdowns in Las Vegas.
Less shallowly -- perhaps even on another planet -- my Facebook and Twitter accounts have been subtly interwoven with an antiwar (anti Iran-Israel war) Internet campaign launched by peace activists in Israel and responded to by many likeminded Persians-in-exile. Ordinary people with ordinary lives trying to achieve the extraordinary: a world that apparently only John Lennon could Imagine. It's a powerful and beautiful moment online, though sadly...

When I saw last week that Ryan Seacrest Productions had an upcoming reality show based on the lives of wealthy La-based Iranian-Americans called the Shahs of Sunset, I did what any self-respecting, tech-friendly Iranian-American would do.
I shared the news on Facebook, tweeted the URL, and even sent the link to my agent, who's currently shopping my memoir, hoping to ride the crest, for-want-of-a-better-word, of a little zeitgeist.
After all, how often do Iranians get in the media spotlight (other than as nuclear-toting demented despots), let alone get their own television program premiering this March on Bravo, the network that brought us the Real Housewives franchise?
Shahs of Sunset depicts the lives of a group of young (the mind reels after discerning the official photo) Persian-American couples (Persian = I hate mullahs) living it up in Tehranangeles, the overpriced swath of real estate between Beverly Hills and West La gobbled up...

If, over the last 10 months, you’ve sometimes felt that sitting through 2011’s movies has been somewhat akin to sitting through TV’s summer reruns, that’s because you have been sitting through reruns. Well, reruns Hollywood style.
According to a Box Office Mojo story earlier this year, 2011 will end as a record year for sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. I don’t know if Mojo included remakes in that calculation, but whether they did or didn’t, remakes have certainly added to that oppressive déjà vu feeling which seems to roll into the multiplex every couple of weeks.
And we’re not even considering the familiar-feeling clones and knock-offs. “Oh, yippee, another superhero flick! Another The Hangover wannabe!” It’s like that Twilight Zone where Dennis Weaver is damned to relive the same bad dream over and over; the people take different parts in each cycle, but it’s still the same nightmare.

Garry and Larry Lane at an idol of their idol
I first learned about Larry Lane earlier this year when I interviewed him after he and his twin brother won the campy reality show Wipeout (in terms of competition, it was, um, a wipeout). The world has long been fascinated by twins, and I figured our readers would be particularly interested in these twins, because they're gay (and because, um, they're cute).
And sure enough, you were.
At the time, Larry told me about a documentary he and twin brother Gary were working on that told their whole life story, centered around a trip they made to hand-deliver a script they'd written for their idol, Dolly Parton. In fact, they used their considerable prize money from Wipeout to buy the rights to use fourteen of Dolly's songs in the movie.
Last week, Larry sent me a copy of the movie,...

Maybe the world doesn’t need Cars 2 any more than it needs another war, but both are happening. John Lasseter’s certainly isn’t the best or most loved of Pixar’s films but it made enough money around the globe to justify another adventure for Lightning McQueen and co.

Hollywoodnews.com: On camera, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer’s “True Blood” characters make a lot of hanky panky, but off camera the engaged duo are quite professional about their relationship.
“They do keep their relationship to themselves. I mean, they’ll hold hands and they’re affectionate but it’s very tame,” actress Carrie Preston (waitress Arlene Fowler) tells People.
Immediately observed by other actors on the set is how Paquin, 28, and Moyer,40, are meant for each other.
Actress Kristen Bauer remarks that the couple’s romance doesn’t strain in balancing their personal and showbiz life: “That can be difficult but it doesn’t seem like it is for them at all. It feels like they’re such professionals and we’re all friends, so it feels very comfortable.”
With their finesse for punctuating American southern accents, it is interesting to know that both Moyer and Paquin hail from outside the U.

Sarah Pinborough is primarily a horror writer with forays into science-fiction, thrillers, media tie-ins and more personal tales of magic realism and mortality. To date she has written six paperback originals for Leisure books, a novella for Ps Publishing and a series of short stories for numerous anthologies. The content of her work is as it comes, sick, funny and nastier than a sack full of burning ferrets on a bonfire. I was greatly impressed by her stab at the creature feature subgenre with Feeding Ground – set in the same universe as Breeding Ground (On my own Tbr list) – women suddenly become grotesquely obese and give birth to ravenous giant spider, and a Kingpin discovers a way to control some of them, with crack cocaine...
