Der Mockumentary.
Spuzzlightyear9 October 2005
Mockumentaries are a relatively new form of film-making. Although made famous by Christopher Guest, they have been around earlier then that (the earliest one I can remember, and quite possibly the best, as it came so unassuming, was a little film called 'Dadetown'. Anyways, never seen a German version of the mockumentary, and this film provides a cute little scenario of regular German people supplying ideas of how they they're making the world a better place. Some of these are quite funny, like the home-operation outfit and surrogate brother program (Mom and dad included!), and there were others that fell somewhat flat (like the traffic ones), so you get a mixed bag here folks, and that's not a bad thing actually in a movie like this.

Very unique, but to me it did not appeal that much

Warning: Spoilers
"Weltverbesserungsmaßnahmen" or "Measures to Better the World" (which is also the literal translation) is a German film from 2005, so this one is already a decade old and despite of how much time has passed, it is still the most known work for both Hintzer and Hüfner, who directed together and also collaborated on the script. The overall outcome here runs for 90 minutes and it is a mockumentary from start to finish. Actually, it is several mockumentaries as this one is basically a collection of several documentary spoofs that have nothing in common with each other apart from the general idea of how one could turn the world into a better place and the characters we see present us their ideas and inventions with which (they believe) they can achieve this goal. The cast does not include any really famous names, but German film buffs will maybe recognize the likes of Bach, Mauff or Finzi, perhaps others too depending on what you have seen as there are some really prolific actors in here. And I would say that they mostly did a good job too as the problem for me was entirely subjective. I think the approach to comedy (and it is certainly more of a comedy than a drama) is one that is really difficult to find access to for the majority of cinema-goers and I definitely include myself there, even if a certain amount of creativity is undeniable. Nonetheless I still believe this was a pretty good idea and the primer is as good as the execution, but from my subjective perspective there was really nothing remotely memorable in here. It also does not really inspire as much as I hoped it would looking at the title and concept. Well, I wish I could have liked this more, it was a pretty strange watch knowing all of it was fiction and staged, but maybe that's a compliment as it did feel authentic most of the time. All in all, still I must say that the better choice may be to skip it for reasons I previously wrote as I found it unappealing and the protagonists' quirks weren't entertaining or memorable enough to make up for the downside here, even if it is far from being a failure. Watch something else instead.

one of those "you-dont-need-a-big-budget-to-make-a-good-movie" movies

there is a bad mood in Germany nowadays. more than 4 million unemployed people, sinking birth rates, the old must worry about their rent, social structures like health insurance become more and more expensive etc. etc. the government failed to make social reforms over years. something has to be done!

this film gives some ironically meant suggestions how to improve live and to help German economy. the basic idea: "if you want to change the country you must change the human being and the way people think".

it is made in documentary style but is in fact a comedy. there are about 8 fictitious stories about people and their ideas who try to save Germany from its downfall. (dont want to spoil more)

all in all a very original and funny movie.
