Hier wird ein weiteres mal gezeigt, das der Animationsfilm auch jenseits des Klamauks und der Kaugummi-Farbpalette funktionieren kann. Eine recht düstere Athmosphäre bildet den Rahmen für die ebenso unscheinbaren wie liebenswerten Charaktäre.
Das zu bestehende Abenteuer ist zwar etwas flach konstruiert, wird jedoch mit reichlich Action in sehenswerten Szenen erzählt, so das durchaus Spannung aufkommt und sich der Zuschauer gerne mitnehmen lässt.
Trotz der Postapokalyptischen Szenerie versteht es auch dieser Animationsfilm den Genretypischen Welpenschutz für die Bildsprache in Anspruch zu nehmen, somit bleibt das ganze ohne weiteres auch Familientauglich.
Alles in allem ein sehr stimmiges Werk von hohem handwerklichem Niveau, das gut unterhält. In Handlung und Umsetzung versucht man hier für das Genre neue Wege zu gehen, was ein faszinierenden und gelungenen, in finaler Instanz aber auch enttäuschenden Eindurck zurück lässt. Letzteres, weil auch hier wieder mal auf die zwanghafte niedlichkeit, wahrscheinlich zugunsten einer breiten Alterskompatibiliät, nicht verzichtet werden konnte. Dennoch ein wichtiger Evolutionsschritt im Genre.
