The village idiot
jotix10012 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Henning Mankell, one of Sweden's best crime novelists, created the novels in which this series, which we caught on a recent trip, is based. The main attraction was to see Kurt Wallander, the inspector in charge of the detectives in Ystad, in action. Although there is another take on Mankell's novels, by Kenneth Brannagh, this program made for Swedish television feels like the real thing. Not only was it photographed in the area, but the creators present us with a cast that do justice to the novels.

This chapter deals with a disturbed man, Goran, we meet as the credits are rolling. He is looking at a night sky and mumbles things about the planets. He appears to be heavily into horoscopes, one of which sheds some light as to the motive behind this person, whom everyone in town thinks is mentally challenged. Goran has decided to take matters into his own hands, deciding to go to one of the local banks to ask for a specific amount. In order to obtain it, he has strapped an explosive device around his neck, terrorizing the people that are caught inside without a clue as to the danger they are facing.

Henriette Leike, one of the women unfortunate enough to be in the bank, is linked in strange ways to Goran. As a matter of fact, she has married a Dr. Leike, a man in charge of a private clinic that, as it turns out, is a wife beater, and connected to Goran as well. She will always be at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Together with her young son, they are targeted because an unexpected link to the Leike family.

It is in this episode that Linda Wallander is promoted to detective. She also starts seeing Stefan, the young man that has recently arrived in Ystad. Wallander is not too keen in knowing that Linda is contemplating moving in with Stefan because she wants to leave her father's apartment and be independent.

A good Krister Henriksson makes an impression as Kurt Wallander. He is physically the image of the man we had in our minds reading the different novels in which he is at the center of the action. Mr. Henriksson makes the character real for the viewer, with all its faults and good qualities. Johanna Salstrom is also an asset to the show. The staff of the Ystad police station are all present to gives the viewer an entertaining time.

The episode was directed by Jorn Faurschou, and adapted for the screen by Petra Revenue. Mr. Faurschou takes us on a tour to different parts of Ystad, following Wallander and his team.

An unusual robbery
Tweekums1 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The second episode of this series is if anything even better than the first. When Goran goes into the bank wearing war paint and with a feather in his hair nobody is afraid, they know him as the local idiot; he is eccentric but harmless. This changes when he shows them a bomb and demands that they transfer a specific amount of money to an account in Denmark. Stefan goes in and persuades Goran to release the hostages, the then comes out saying everything will be okay when he pulls the red wire; it is not however and the bomb detonates. It was clearly a very strange bank robbery, why would a robber only ask for a relatively small amount and why would he kill himself immediately afterwards? The money had been sent to a doctor's surgery in Denmark but he had sent it back remarkably quickly; before he had even been informed of the circumstances. As the investigation progresses we learn that Goran was connected to Doctor Leike but almost as soon as we learn he is a prime suspect he too is killed. Both bombs are marked with signs of the zodiac and a set of astrological charts leads to Kurt consulting a local astrologer who tells him they suggest that there will be a third event and that Goran may have a twin. Knowing when the next event is likely to be it is a race against time for the Ystad police to catch the bomber before he kills again.

This was a gripping episode where Kurt plays a larger role than the previous episode, that doesn't mean Linda doesn't also play a large role, in fact she transfers from uniform to CID. She is also getting closer to Stefan; they are moving in together although only to share a house, they will have separate bedrooms. The acting was top notch, especially from Krister Henriksson, Johanna Sällström and Ola Rapace who play Kurt and Linda Wallander and Stefan the leading police officers, I also like Mats Bergman's low key portrayal of Nyberg, the forensics expert.

Reveng Served Cold

A mentally challenged man, who thinks Sitting Bull was his father, ignites a pipe bomb in a bank, after demanding money from the tellers. There is little logic to his actions, but because he is eccentric and slow, it is passed off as the actions of an "idiot." As Wallander and Linda, his daughter and colleague get involved, there are all kinds of tentacles leading to this event. For one thing, a prominent cardiologist has been sending 2000 Krona a month for years to this man's mother (she has died recently). For another, there is some sort of astrological connection involving star charts and dates. But there is an even bigger mystery unfolding (which I will leave to the viewer). If I have a criticism, it might be that the conclusion is a little light on reality. Still, this series is really growing on me.
