An insult to the game of poker
itssosublime4 August 2007
I feel awful for Louis Gossett Jr. and Micheal Madsen for having been involved in this farce. I have nothing against Dominique Swain or the rest of the young cast of characters that look like they belong in a late-night Cinemax flick rather than a movie about poker, but I am insulted at the way the movie was directed. "Ace" played cards like a novice, rather than someone who is supposed to be the daughter of a poker great. The scene in which she calls down a pair of fours to the river against trip queens, only to suck out and make her straight was absolutely grotesque. "Dead money" should have been her nickname.

I have to assume that this film was made by people who are either not very experienced at cards or were simply trying to cash in on the current popularity of the game. Not that I expected anything on par with the Stu Unger story or Rounders, but my god if you're going to make a movie about poker at least make sure you can do it justice. This film would likely be much more appealing to a woman's taste based on the storyline, but for true poker players and fans it's nothing but a waste of time. A fairly poor film all the way around. Very disappointing.

Like a poke in the eye with a sharp stick
intelearts30 September 2007
Firstly, all the good reviews here, you know the 10/10ers are written by reviewers who have only one movie reviewed. A sure sign of something wrong - pure flack.

This isn't horrible: but it really is a waste. The acting above all stinks...

The writing is fine except when you really want it to be original it is horribly clichéd

The film is horribly slushy. And the hospital subplot is entirely unnecessary.

If I ever meet the person responsible for the music I will definitely be asking for my money back; just intrusive, inappropriate and all round yucky...

It would have been so much better to concentrate on the classroom and the poker room. It has a good premise and ruins it by turning it into a soppy soap opera...

Looks and feels like a made for TV special in every respect. Watchable, barely.

All In was more like All out - **may contain some spoilers**
markdr310 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
**May contain some spoilers**

I wanted to enjoy this movie, I really did.

Too many flashbacks during the first half the movie - it was ridiculous.

The acting especially during the more emotional scenes was pretty bad. I thought Dominique Swain's performance was uneven at best. At times, she was okay but in some scenes I thought she was pretty bad.

I like Michael Madsen but he didn't have a lot work with here and his character disappears for most of the movie. It's always nice to see Louis Gossett Jr, and I wish he was in more of the film in a mentoring role (for Swain).

The supporting cast was charming enough but not really adequate.

I think this film tried to accomplish too much. A gambling father, a relationship between father and daughter (and wife), a medical school career challenge, a conspiracy at medical school, a relationship with a boyfriend, a poker championship and a reuniting of father and daughter.

I think it would have worked much better if the film stuck to Swain trying to win at Poker and being mentored by Louis Gossett Jr and Michael Madsen. Forget about showing Medical School and the conspiracy.

I don't know how I managed to watch the whole movie but the best scenes were during the Poker matches and when Madsen, and Gossett Jr. were on screen.

this movie sucks like a dyson vacuum!
lassoff10 July 2007
This was the worse movie I've seen in a long, long time. So bad, I was shouting derisions at the TV screen. The acting was from HELL, the writing was moronic, but more disturbing is the obviously planted "rave" reviews in this IMDb comment page. Who do you think you're fooling? Do you think if you manufactured praise that it makes it true or valid? This was complete CRAP! I can't imagine so many people went about this production with their head up their ass not knowing how bad this film would be. Who was the actress sleeping with to get a chance to blow this role? Who is the screenwriter related to? Was the producers trying to launder money or are they just blind and stupid. The "real" has-been stars were just phoning in their parts and taking their paychecks and who could blame them. Everyone involved please leave show business immediately and do something more productive and meaningful. Like street-sweeping. Spare us any other attempts. Please.

this is truly awful
delhart200110 August 2007
I have to agree with another writer on here when he/she says "were you watching the same film" to the people who wrote the positive reviews, This film is bad, from beginning to end, there are no redeeming features whatsoever, the script, the direction. The acting was abysmal, the lead actress Miss Swain, well her "acting" was like watching paint dry slowly, and i can only assume the reason why Mr Madson & Gosset were there is for the money. The strange thing is, there are some writers on here comparing this to "Casino" and there is even mention of "The Godfather, when in reality this film should not be spoke of in the same breath as those. There are a couple of nice things to say about the film, 1) when the credits roll, and 2) the actress "Avrielle Corti", who plays young Ace,deserves to be the only one to get some credit for her acting. You can decide for yourselves, either to watch this, or give it a miss, all i can say is You have been warned, stay well !

Was this a Lifetime movie?
BleuBlanceEtRouge9 July 2007
I recommend this movie to anyone that enjoyed the movie of the week about the alcoholic mother or the secretly bulimic high school girl. I kept looking for the Lifetime logo on the bottom corner of the screen. I'm with the other guy that thinks all the other voters are crazy. I am almost positive that these people were part of the production and really hoped that IMDb readers would watch the movie. I watched this on The Movie Channel last night. There is no way this played in any theater. The only thing cheesier than this movie is the set (Hollywood Park Casino). This is Madsen's second bad poker movie, I believe. He was in Tilt as well on ESPN, I think. I welcome any comments to the contrary. Poker player? Med student? Who cares?

Worst. Movie. Ever.
ttbw712 August 2007
This was by far the worst film I have ever seen in my entire life. The plot was absolutely ridiculous. The idea of making money off of poker was somehow sprung upon the audience with very little coherent reasoning or explanation ("Oh you're sort of good at poker based on the one hand that you won when we were drinking and playing strip-poker, so let's pay off hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debts with our combined pseudo-talents! YAY!"). Absolutely everything about this film was awful. The script, the acting, and the photography were nothing short of laughable. I wouldn't normally post a comment at all on a film so terrible, but, somehow, this film managed to be so particularly horrendous that it was thought provoking in itself.

This Movie Sucks
mellowinman15 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Oh for God's sake. How could anyone seriously give this piece of trash anything higher than a 1? Someone is seriously messing with us on these rave reviews. The story is unbelievable, cartoonish, silly and not the least bit interesting.

The acting? It's embarrassing. Louis Gosset Jr totally pimped himself out to this crapstravaganza, and Madsen was more convincing in the lame love.com. Of course, these two out acted the entire rest of the cast; most of whom had better save up their money while they still have looks.

Dominique Swain? Nothing. No talent whatsoever. Shameful that this person has ever been cast in a movie.

This may be the very worst movie I have ever seen in my life. I can't think of enough ways to say how badly I hated it. There was nothing good in it at all; not one single minute of it. What complete absolute garbage! I can't believe this even got made! Do NOT waste your time on this ridiculous crap. It's not even "so bad it's good." It's just so bad it's bad.

I've watched better written porn!
brucebarth12314 August 2008
This is truly awful. It is unbelievable that movies like this get made much less shown. The only explanation might be that some very rich kids were very well connected.

This was so awful that I want out of my way to register for this site. The plot was so predictable and the writing was so bad, I thought I was watching porn -in fact I was so fascinated by its mediocrity I couldn't turn it off. It's unfortunate that L. Gossett and M. Madsen got sucked into this, it's a perfect example of just what's wrong with Hollywood. not to mention "ace" Anderson -huh? talk about porn. porn names. porn plot and porn acting

Saw a Preview - WOW!
someone_cooler14 March 2006
I got to see a preview and this movie is going to the launching pad for Dominique Swayns career. Not only is she hot, but she acts fabulous! I also have not seen Michale Madsen play such a good part. This really gave him an opportunity to show off a lot of his acting chops that most of his films haven't given him the opportunity to use. Lou Gossett Jr. Seems like such a good guy and a class act in everything he does and in All In he carries on his tradition of great acting and helping to hold the story together. It's a great mix of poker - Medicine - and a really hot looking cast! Although, when you have to look at Michelle Lombardo and Kristen Miller it's not a bad way to relax your eyes.

Absolutely one of the worst movies ever made...seriously
Sleshvibe1 December 2007
I play a good bit of poker, but even if I did not I would be very disappointed in wasting my time watching this movie. It has absolutely nothing to do with real odds, or anything to do with poker. Acting is atrocious, the representation of poker is astoundingly bad, and every part of the movie absolutely sucks. "All In' has as much to do with poker and actual movie quality acting as a fart has to do with perfume, the movie is terrible....Don't ever, ever, ever watch it. For one, there are people out there that could not even rig a deck for the sake of the plot's horrible progression if they had all day and could arrange the cards without anyone looking, for two, the movie sucks, but I think said that already. I know most movies always have someone saying "worst movie ever", but this truly is the WORST MOVIE EVER MADE!

Embarrassing as a Poker movie, and too full of itself for melodrama...
dgoodh14 April 2008
Y'know, I saw this listed on one of the Showtime channels, and I like poker so I thought I'd give it a glance...

Oh man... Look, I'm not one normally to go as far off the deep end in coming down on a film as a lot of people do, but really, All In deserves every bit of blasting that it's getting here (except of course for all of those suspicious gushing posts at the start). This felt to me like it was written by a 14-year old who likes poker but also wanted to make his socio-political "statement" without having any sort of life experience there to make such a statement. This could've been fun if there was some sort of high camp value to it (like say what Showgirls has) but it just takes itself too damn seriously.

Dominique Swain is never once convincing that she has these poker "skills" (seeming more of an embarrassment to anyone that's ever studied the game) and often times, especially during one of her emotional rants, she comes off as grating more than anything else. I thought it was nice to see both Michael Madsen and Lou Gossett, Jr. here, though it's clear that they're cashing a check, they at least still have some credibility to their parts. Not so with the rest of the cast, especially our cartoonish doctors and the Saved By The Bell-lite medical students.

But then still you have to contend with the poor pacing and the extremely clumsy way of shooting this, there's never any tension here, and never any excitement. this one's both an embarrassment as a poker movie and even as schlocky soap opera... 1/10 and that's being generous...

Great Movie.....HAHAHAHAHA
broomizo10 August 2008
Wow!!!! Saw this movie on cable and it was one of the best things ever. It's so bad that it's good, I couldn't stop watching. The plot is everywhere, they solve problems that shouldn't even be in the movie. The acting is like a bad made for TV movie. Even the camera angles were below that of a direct to VHS movie, yeah not even good enough to get a DVD release. It's classified as a drama by my cable channel but I was holding my sides laughing constantly.

If you like poker at all or even have watched it on TV, I hope you check this movie out cause it will be one of the funniest things you'll watch in a while.

You Guys Are Kidding, Right?
brucewla6 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I mean, were we watching the same movie? I saw this stinker last night on, I think the movie channel, and it was awful. The beginning of it, the production looked so bad, i thought I had tuned to an "adulit" movie by mistake. The acting was on a par with one, except for Micheal Madsen and that little girl. They didn't even show the poker action well; they flashed the person's hole cards, then showed the flop and board cards at a bad angle; it was hard to figure out what they were trying to portray. Did she have a set? A flush? Huh? wait, there were 4 clubs, no, or was it more spades? Oh, it was a straight. Just awful.

The story such as it is, follows a young lady who is the daughter of a well, depending on how you look at it, professional or addicted, gambler. (I think the difference is, you're a professional if you gamble all the time, and make money at it). The dad tries his best to give his little girl a good life, but there's all these problems, his wife changed, he owes money to the local capo, etc etc, I won't give away too much but there's some standard plot devices at work here. The story is actually OK, it's the mostly bad acting and "indy" production quality that makes it a bad movie.

If there's nothing else on cable, and you don't mind throwing away about an hour and a half of your life (it seems much longer), you might take a look at it. If you're expecting a good poker movie, like the Rounders, or something, don't bother, though.

Horrible horrible horrible!
bronskrat5 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I never write reviews but this was that bad. It looked like a soft core Skinemax flick without the skin. This was one of the worst films I'd ever seen. It really doesn't even make any sense. The ending, especially. I mean, there aren't any card cameras at a 5-million dollar final table? What??? Poor Johnny Juanda and Eric Seidel make cameos, I hope they got paid reeeeeally well. This script must've been written on a napkin. Maybe this was a long commercial for Party Poker.com. And she has time to be in a large poker tournament AND in med school at the same time? There are so many stupid plot points in this film it might only be fun to watch if you make some kind of drinking game out of it.

Worst acting, dialog, music, argh!
johanwolfe12 August 2007
I normally don't bother to write reviews, but I couldn't help myself. Someone wrote this movie a positive review and that's why I wasted 30 minutes trying to get through it. This was the most god awful pieces of trash I have seen in a long time. Sometimes bad movies are fun to watch, this was just painful. The acting was ridiculously poor, the dialog was bad and the delivery made it even worse. Even the music was ridiculously cheesy. This makes made for TV movies look good. Apparently someone was just trying to cash in on a fad, and thought they didn't need any real content. Save yourself a trip to the trash can and skip it.

Where do they find money to make films such as this?
redbellypig16 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
So this is supposed to be a movie about a girl whose father is a great poker player who ends up owing tons of cash to the mob because he sucks at cards. He dies to collect insurance money and to stiff the mob. OK wateva! The girl grows up and goes to Medical School and her friends decide she should enter a $5million poker tournament to pay off their student debts. Of course they do not take time to learn medicine, they instead party and hang out in casinos. OK wateva! This girl when she is not gambling discovers that her resident doctors/surgeons don't make very much money so they have to resort to extorting money from poor, illegal immigrants. OK wateva! So now this girl is playing a poker tournament for $5 million when she freaks out because Colonel Sanders sits down at her table. Oh wait, its her dad who faked his death and now returns to a televised poker tournament his daughter has entered. Let me guess that the insurance company personnel that were involved in her fathers death aren't watching this tournament even though they would probably be interested because they would be curious how that little girl's life turned out after losing her daddy. Lets also assume the mob boss isn't watching and salivating over any money the girl might win to pay off her fathers debt. Lets assume that neither recognize her dad because he now looks like Colonel Sanders. OK wateva! Now the evil Doctor who is recognized as a poker great sits down at her table to play poker. Why? because he is so broke he needs to play poker to make ends meet. Why? because doctors in the US don't make as much money as the illegal immigrants he has to extort money from. OK wateva! Now....I could go on but I don't have the energy. OK? wateva

Very Good Film
ExchangeDC1 May 2006
The soundtrack was outstanding. The cinematography was exceptional for an "Indie" film. It was nice to see Madsen doing something different for a change. The content is topical, the film moves along without any dead time. The little girl is enough of a reason to see this film, she is outstanding. A lot of familiar faces. It was definitely a fun evening at the theater. There's enough cheesecake and beefcake to keep everyone happy. Russo is a classic bad guy, as a doctor, he's pretty scary. Gossett is solid as always. Dominique Swain worked very hard in this movie. She has lots of screen time and lots of emotion. She can be very intense when she needs to be. And wow, what about Colleen Porch? How come she doesn't do more work? Definitely worth the price of a ticket.

Lame, bad acting and boring
vashukun16 December 2007
This movie is to say it quickly bad.

the poker played in this is pretty unbelievable getting straights and flushes on the river, playing the shittiest cards in poker and hitting.

the acting was also something really bad, alright they had a good actor (Michael Madsen) who was in it for maybe 15 mins tops the plot twist and turned every scene change, i am not sure if it wanted to be a movie about love, becoming a doctor or playing poker. although it did try to be all 3 and failed really badly and was really really predictable, especially the last poker hand played.

if you plan to see this movie, just don't its a complete waste of time.

At least the comments about it here are entertaining!
zuzu338 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It's true, this film was godawful.... and the posters who gave it a one are ALL right --there are too many reasons to count as for why this film deserves such a bad rating.

But I do want to say I had several good laughs reading the comments about it here! Now that experience was far, far more entertaining then the film itself.

I would like to point out one more huge plot hole, however, something so absolutely absurd that any script writer above the age of 8 would surely have spotted it -- supposedly, this big deal doctor who must make millions a year as a doctor, is shaking down poor Medicaid patients for sums like $10,000 or he threatens to not complete the surgery. WTF?! How can poor patients come up with kind of money? That's got to be the dumbest, most unproductive scam ever.

I honestly think the script was written as they went along. At one point, you think the slightly older-than-intern doctor (the one with huge collagen lips who seems to wear an evening dress everywhere she goes and no doubt wears one under her surgical scrubs, along with ten pounds of unhygenic make-up) appears in a casino scene and is obviously being set up as a gambling addict. But, then, poof! That plot goes no where and the evil head doc comes in.

Honestly, I'll stop now. I wasted enough time on this stinker!

Mind Boggling Bad
tjcush3-120 January 2008
Someone obviously thought this was a good way to exploit the poker craze. I have given it a lot of consideration, and this may the worst film I have ever seen. There must have been panic in the editing room as they came to the realization that this was a huge stinker. Michael Madsen and Louis Gosset would be well served to pool their resources and have it pulled off the market. Why is it bad? The production quality is 1970's game show quality at best. The plot lines , both major and minor, bring to mind the kind of stuff you would usually find in soft core pornography. The soundtrack is made of the worst collection of B sides I've ever heard....It just goes on and on.

Unwatchable
cranmer8 December 2007
I have watched many bad movies, many bad movies! There are few I could not watch. I got through "Children of the Corn IV" rather well. "Psycho Beach Party" while painful was watchable. This film (sic) was not.

The plot was possible, the execution was not.

I tried to watch it three times. The first two, I started at the beginning and just had to turn it off from sheer embarrassment. The third time, I decided to sample the movie. No matter where I tuned in, it was worse.

Domique Swain is certainly a capable actress. She lends some credibility to the movie. Madsen at his very worst is Madsen. (Not a bad thing) Swain carries the movie, but the load is too heavy.

Ace high Straight !
I enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. If your a guy or girl who likes Vegas and the unexpected result every time a card is flipped over then I recommend picking up some Chinese food and beer and sitting down with this flick .Anyone who loved movies like Scorsese's CASINO should enjoy this genre, even though this film deals more with a father/daughter relationship and being there for a loved one rather than the typical mob Vegas..Madson's emotional performance with his kid almost had me in tears in the end...I also would keep a sharp eye out for this new director Vallelonga..................................I give it a full boat or at least 3 aces............Private

Really Bad (alleged) Poker Film
BlockHead7612 June 2008
This movie was a royal flush of crap. Besides the horrible poker standards from a technical standpoint. I was stunned to see it had four writers. The dialogue was appropriate for an MTV drama. I was disappointed to see Michael Madsen attached to such a donkey of a movie. I guess he has to eat too. James Russo was his usual one note gruff self. The Director apparently brought his vast acting expertise as a walk on character actor (mostly featured extra roles)to direct his mostly young, pin-up looks but shallow as a puddle cast. the subplots were inane and muddled. This film was a train wreck riding the popularity of hold' em's recent rise to prominence. The Soundtrack was completely unsuited to the tone of the movie. The Main character is capable of only righteous indignation as an emotion. the 10 yr old version was much more convincing as a real character than the "grown-up" version we are supposed to empathize with. This is 90 minutes of my life I'll want back someday.

God almighty, this is without a doubt the sorriest piece of crap EVER...
jefftjones-18 January 2008
If "smell-o-vision" is ever actually invented, and you stumble upon this first-class disaster, the smell of failure (dog turds) WILL waft through your television. How in the hell the entire cast got through this fiasco of a production with a straight is beyond me. AND!...and!!...that the good folks at HBO include this in their programming, subjecting us to possibly the worst acting performances in cinematic history, is dumbfounding!! I mean, they had to have felt like less of a human being by actually ACCEPTING their paychecks when it was over. Honestly, by the end, I couldn't turn it off because I was in tears laughing hysterically (and deep down thinking, is this for real?? I mean I hit the "info" button on my remote to make sure it wasn't classified as a comedy!!) I realize Swain, Madsen, Gossett Jr., et al, aren't Oscar caliber actors, but that they lent their acting "talents" to this garbage is truly baffling. I'd normally tell potential viewers to stay the hell away, but it's almost worth your time to enjoy some good belly laughs at the expense of the entire cast and crew...just make sure to have a barf bag close at hand.
