Phil Vischer completed the script for this film in 2002 - before Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) was released. But because of the bankruptcy and buyout of Big Idea Productions, the film wasn't able to start production until late 2005.
Before this movie, another film known as "The Bob and Larry Movie" was planned. The film would've explored the origins of Bob and Larry and how they've met. The film would've also featured humans. But the film was forced into cancellation due to the bankruptcy of Big Idea. There have been other attempts to get the film back into production but have proved unsuccessful. There are several pieces of concept art for the film online. Phil Vischer stated in a tweet that he has the script for the film but can't show it due to legal reasons.
