Ready for a good time? Great! That just might happen for you if you go see Sausage Party. But be warned. This movie is not a love-it or hate-it film; it’s just not. Sausage Party is a have fun or don’t-have fun film. But if you go into it with the right mindset, trust me, my friends. You will have fun.
But heed this warning: if you can’t get past the profanity, you need to walk away. No, don’t walk…run. Run far away. Run or fly as far and as fast as your sensitive feet or wings will carry you, because, if you see this movie, you are about to be highly, extraordinarily, and profoundly offended by its very nature, much less any of the words actually uttered on-screen. Offended by sex? Offended by drinking and illicit substances? Offended by violence (albeit animated in nature)? Offended by swear words?...

The intensity of Michael Shannon‘s onscreen presence and the overwhelming (sometimes too-overwhelming) authorial control wielded by Guillermo del Toro may very well be a match made in Heaven. We should soon have a sense of their compatibility: the latter is looking to cast the former in his Fox Searchlight-backed Cold War romance, supposedly titled The Shape of Water, which has secured Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Richard Jenkins. [The Wrap]
Here’s the synopsis that came in last week:
We’re hearing that the fairytale, set in 1963, centers around Elisa (Hawkins), a mute janitor working at a lab where an amphibious man is being held captive. When Elisa falls in love with the creature, she devises a plan to help him escape with the assistance of her neighbor (Jenkins). The world outside of the lab, however, may prove to be more dangerous for the amphibious man than Elisa could have anticipated.

Everybody’s talking about the next Guillermo del Toro film. Well, in fairness, everybody is always talking about the next Guillermo del Toro film – whether he has one nearing production or not. There is just something about this particular filmmaker that inspires excitement and speculation, more so than most others. Perhaps it is his distinctive style and tone, or maybe it is the fact that – while he discusses a great many projects – very few actually find their way to the big screen with del Toro actually at the helm.
The speculation surrounding this new project is solidifying into something considerably more concrete than usual, however – not least news of casting choices and deals. We have already heard that Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer are on board for the adventure, and Michael Stuhlbarg (Steve Jobs) is set to join them. Now, it is said that Richard Jenkins is in talks to co-star.

Following up Crimson Peak, we recently learned that after many, many potential projects being lined up, director Guillermo del Toro has decided what he’ll take on next. Teaming with Fox Searchlight, we only previously knew the project was described as an “otherworldly love story set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963.” It’s set to begin production in August in Toronto, and we now have a title, new story details, and an expanded cast.
Along with Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer, A Serious Man‘s Michael Stuhlbarg and the Oscar-nominated Richard Jenkins, both stand-outs in virtually every film they take part in, have joined the cast, according to The Tracking Board. They also report the title is The Shape of Water, and the new story details paint a perfectly strange scenario. Check them out below:

The track record of TV series produced from comic books is spotty at best. For every show that was as weird and cool as “The Maxx” you’ve got at least three that were every bit as cheesy and muddled as “The Flash” (which starred John Wesley Shipp). I’m not trying to claim that “The Maxx” was ever wholly coherent, but if you’ve read the series or are reading the reprint series, then you know that when it comes to adaptations of material, watching “The Maxx” is a whole lot like reading it. I’m also not saying that I didn’t like “The Flash” when it aired in 1990. I’ve got both shows on DVD and have no regrets about owning either one.

The Zero Theorem
Written by Pat Rushin
Directed by Terry Gilliam
UK/Romania/USA/France, 2013
Stop me if you’ve heard this one already: a low-level cog in a comically large bureaucratic environment in a grotesque-looking “future” dystopia struggles in the face of obsolescence and oblivion. The character in question is fundamentally good, but incredibly weedy, their resolve and spirit having been ground to stumps by the world around them. People come in and out of the protagonist’s surroundings either to goad them into just rolling with the Orwellian punches, or to pull them out of a tight spot in a bizarre or humorous way. The ‘hero’ also creates elaborate fantasies and ideas to inhabit as a coping mechanism. If this sounds familiar, that’s because these broad plot points describe Terry Gilliam’s towering 1985 bad-vibes masterpiece Brazil. It also more or less describes his latest, The Zero Theorem,...

Nobody thought it would work. So, a kid gets bit by a radioactive spider — and it gives him superpowers? He swings around New York City on webs and fights crime? Superhero titles were starting to come back into fashion, but Marvel Comics owner Martin Goodman didn't believe a superhero title with a high-schooler hero would sell; teenagers were generally relegated to humor comics, like Archie, or to sidekick roles, like Batman's Robin.

The Good Wife, Season 5, Episode 19, “Tying The Knot”
Written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman
Directed by Josh Charles
Airs Sundays at 9pm on CBS
The Good Wife is obsessed, especially lately, with memory, with subjective experience and the way it colors our entire perceptions of the world around us. We never get out of our heads, after all. Everything we ever experience is colored by this limitation. Our senses and our recollections are all we have to tie us to the past, and to help us pull ourselves forward. The world outside ourselves is something we can only do our best to conceive of. Anything but our own flawed memory is pure conjecture.
“Tying the Knot” is a marvelous episode that puts us in Alicia’s head as she is present for another death at Colin Sweeney’s residence. Sweeney is the closest this show ever treads to a lesser legal procedural like Boston Legal.

Many movies are the sum of their characters. But what if you only have the one? And what if you go even further, like Tom Hardy in Steven Knight’s new film Locke, and confine them to a single space? Aspects such as plot and motivation lose their conventional bearings; it’s very much up to the sole on-screen character, whether it be Hardy in Locke, Ryan Reynolds in Buried, or James Franco in 127 Hours - they all bear the burden of keeping the audience entertained, giving kinesis to their static predicaments. But there’s one factor that’s nearly always neglected with not just these movies, but the vast majority: there are always two characters on screen. The actor, and the landscape.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the movie version of Zombies Ate My Neighbors, but it looks like the project is alive and well. Based off of the 1993 game of the same name for Snes and Sega Genesis, Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a humorous top-down zombie survival game. Developed by LucasArts, players take the role of Zeke or Julie, escaping from zombies in suburbia.
It has been rumored that the project has moved into the hands of Lucasfilm and Disney, after being associated with Lucasarts prior to the company’s acquisition. When we reported on the project back in 2011, John Darko had written the screenplay and he’s still on board as the writer/producer. Here’s what we were told by him about the movie’s story:

The news from Walt Disney has been a mixed bag this week. We saw them shutter LucasArts and today the next wave of reductions and layoffs are coming in the name of efficiency. If Chairman Bob Iger is right, and this repositions the company for the world of tomorrow, then it was a wise move, better done now to remain competitive. Creatively, this week we were given three other pieces of news. First, there was the announcement of the anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo, Finding Dory¸ which will arrive in 2015. Here’s the official announcement: Burbank, Calif. (April 2, 2013) – When Dory said “just keep swimming” in 2003’s Oscar-winning film Finding Nemo, she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could remember). Ellen DeGeneres, voice of the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, revealed details today about Disney•Pixar’s Finding Dory—an all-new big-screen adventure diving into theaters on Nov.

Anthony Perkins in Goodbye Again
Happy birthday to the man I call my Time Machine Husband (Tm), Anthony Perkins. Though...

Set against a majestic Alaskan backdrop teeming with life, their journey begins as winter comes to an end and the bears emerge from hibernation to face the bitter cold. The world outside is exciting—but risky—as the cubs’ playful descent down the mountain carries with it a looming threat of avalanches.
As the season changes from spring to summer, the brown bear families must work together to find food—ultimately feasting at a plentiful salmon run—while staying safe from predators, including an ever-present wolf pack. ‘Bears’ captures the fast-moving action and suspense of life in one...
