"Vier Fenster" or "Four Windows" is a German movie from 2006, so it had its 10th anniversary last year. It is the first full feature film by writer and director Christian Moris Müller and certainly also his most known work. After a break of almost 10 years, he made his second film not too long ago, but honestly after seeing this one here, I would not say I am sad he isn't exactly a prolific movie maker. If you take a look at the cast here, you will not see too many well-known names. Maybe huge German film buffs will recognize a face or two I guess. And it is also tough to judge the actors here because the script is so weak at times that it really sinks their attempts at making a difference. The film switches between boring/uninspired and extremely unrealistic. With the latter parts I am referring to the son's sexual behavior and also to the subway scenes. These scenes were really crass and over-the-top and I can see why the filmmaker included them. He wanted to show us how broken the protagonist was, but... Yes there is a "but", a huge "but" actually. You need to properly elaborate on stuff like that. You need to write the character in a way where it makes sense she would behave like that, before and after these scenes. None of it was done here. It was all just shocking for the sake of it and that's really the worst you can do in terms of trying to make a creative impact. Eventually, this is also the main reason why I decided to give this film an even lower rating than I intended too throughout large parts of the film, namely a */***** instead of a **/*****. The cover we see here on IMDb with the photo shamelessly trying to cash in on the gay subject (because these films are frequently more known than the res) with the movie not even being about this at the very core certainly isn't helping either. Neither are the pretentious quotes. Major thumbs-down. It could have been potentially a solid film with more talented hands at work, but it turned into a failure. Stay away from this one.

Turn a different corner..

I'm actually very surprised that this film, which I saw at the Vancouver International Film Festival, is rated so low, because I really did enjoy this piece, sort of a Rashomon twisted tale, of 4 members of a family's take on a very uh, INTERESTING day. We follow each member around in each segment, and find out the twists and turns of their separate days. You think son is so smart? You should see what he does on the side? Daughter looks distant? Wait till you see her on the subway! Let's, uh, not even TALK about Mom and Dad. All in all, this was a fun movie with a lot of great performances (and I might as well say it, the son is a total hottie) that I was pleasantly surprised by, and I was eagerly expecting the next twist and turn!

A father, a mother, a son, and a daughter behaving badly.

I'm rating this movie 8 because it completely diverted me one afternoon while I was recovering from entertaining a visitor for three days. The movie depicts a middle-class German family in which each member thirsts for sexual adventure. It is slow moving, but what happens next is never predictable. Some of the fun is in the little details: the way the father and daughter show their anti-social inclinations by littering, the way the mother scratches a bit of something-or-other off a wall--the way she does a solo dance. All the actors are attractive and pleasing to look at. If you want a sweeping story, this isn't it. If you like observing people, you will like this movie. The one big weakness is that there is no big payoff at the end. The movie just sort of stopped, and I wished it hadn't.
