Made by London Weekend Television, 'The Galton & Simpson Comedy' was an anthology of single half-hour plays similar to their later Yorkshire Television effort 'The Galton & Simpson Playhouse' in 1977. These included 'The Suit' starring Leslie Phillips ( essentially a dry run for 'Casanova 73' ), 'Don't Dilly-Dally On The Way' with Jimmy Edwards and Pat Coombs, and 'Pity Poor Edie...Married To Him' with Gwendolyn Watts and Milo O'Shea. 'An Extra Bunch Of Daffodils' was the very last to be transmitted.
The late Stratford Johns plays 'Lawrence Warner', a serial murderer. His tactics are always the same; he finds a lonely rich woman, courts and marries her, and takes out a life insurance policy before ending it with the aid of poison. So far his victims have been Constance, Edith, Joyce, Mary, and Beryl. However, he meets his match in the unlikely shape of Mrs.Evans ( the delightful and much-missed Patsy Rowlands ). This is essentially a two-hander, boasting good writing and acting. As 'Warner', Johns is ever-so sinister, almost like something from a Hitchcock movie, while Patsy exudes sympathy as his prey. The final twist, though predictable, is wonderfully executed.
This was repeated on Channel 4 in 1992 as part of 'T.V. Heaven', hosted by Frank Muir, ironically the very man who had commissioned it! All six episodes exist. Let's hope we see them on D.V.D. soon.
