Barry Manilow was set to close the show at the PBS' 33rd annual A Capitol Fourth celebration in Washington, D.C. last night and boy, did he ever. The 70-year-old performed classics, like show-closer "Let Freedom Ring," to a crowd of thousands. The festivities also included a performance from Neil Diamond (who sang "Sweet Caroline" to honor the victims and survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing), selections from Lincoln played by the National Symphony Orchestra and a fireworks display. This wasn't Manilow's first time headlining the Capitol Fourth presentation—back in 2009 he led the show and was requested this year by popular demand. We think this smooth crooner is better than...

If you don’t live in one of the cities — New York, Washington, D.C., or Philadelphia — where the networks are planning to broadcast July 4 festivities — or if you’re just not that interested in leaving the great air-conditioned indoors, TV offers several alternatives to the local fireworks displays.
The 37th annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular in New York hosted by Nick Cannon, features musical performances by Mariah Carey, Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift, Cher, Pitbull, and Selena Gomez. Despite the special’s star-studded lineup, the highlight is the fireworks show, this year entitled “It Begins with a Spark.

Barry Manilow says that even if he'd been the only person watching "Smash," he was determined to hang with it.
The pop-music icon will spend most of his summer prepping the relaunch of "Harmony," a stage show about a wartime singing group that he and longtime creative partner Bruce Sussman first produced in 1997. An extensively revised version opens at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre in September, and Manilow appreciates the show-mounting struggles the characters on NBC's recently ended Broadway drama "Smash" faced.
"It's been a very tough road for this beautiful show," Manilow tells Zap2it of "Harmony," maintaining it was "never, ever" because of the content. "It was always because of investors and producers, all the people you need to deal with when you're trying to raise $15 million to $18 million and get to New York.
"We just had bad luck. We would sign a contract and they'd keep us (on hold...

Washington -- Actor Matthew Broderick, country singer Josh Turner, composer John Williams and a dozen U.S. Olympic athletes will be among the headliners for this year's July Fourth celebration on the National Mall.
Broderick and Kelli O'Hara will perform songs from the Tony-winning Broadway musical "Nice Work If You Can Get It" during the program, known as "A Capitol Fourth," organizers said Tuesday.
The performers will take the stage on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol ahead of the annual Independence Day fireworks display in Washington, which typically draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the country.
Turner has had three No. 1 singles on the U.S. country charts, including "Why Don't We Just Dance." His new album, "Punching Bag," will be released Wednesday. Kool & The Gang, tenor Russell Watson, singer-actress Megan Hilty and the National Symphony Orchestra are also slated to perform.

Matthew Morrison definitely isn't preoccupied with the season finale of "Glee."
Just take his opening line in a same-day interview: "Oh. It's Tuesday, isn't it?"
Known to the countless fans of the Fox series as Lima, Ohio high-school teacher and glee-club adviser Will "Mr. Schue" Schuester, the Broadway veteran ("Hairspray") has a very full plate these days. His self-titled CD has just been released, and his summer concert tour includes nearly two dozen dates as a "special guest" of Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block.
Still, Morrison is very pleased with Tuesday's (May 24) second-year-ending "Glee" story that takes Mr. Schue to New York with his New Directions singers for the hugely anticipated Nationals competition. It also finds him mulling leaving William McKinley High School behind for the Great White Way with longtime acquaintance April Rhodes (Kristin Chenoweth's recurring character), a twist that has merged art and life for Morrison.
