Sex & Nudity

  • Many of the Na'vi women can be seen topless with traditional beaded necklace, as can the men
  • The blue-skinned species, known as the Na'vi, have humanoid like bodies. This tribe doesn't wear traditional clothing. Because of this, you can see the areola and nipples on male and female characters in some shots.
  • A (human) woman wears a white tank top throughout several scenes, and some cleavage is seen in several shots in two separate scenes.
  • A few very mild sex references.
  • The Na'vi people are aliens, but they are humanoid creatures. They dress in a tribal way, and we see their backsides (not fully covered by their tails) quite a bit. The men wear only loincloths, and the women wear loincloths and ornamental, stringy necklaces as bras.
  • A brief suggestive between Jake and Neytiri shows the two kissing and beginning to passionately caress each other. There is no nudity, but they wake together the next morning, and Neytiri explains they are "mated for life." In the extended edition, this scene includes the two touching their queues together, implying they can "feel" each other (as explained earlier in the film).
  • A few sexual jokes and lines are tossed about, including a masturbation quip from Dr. Augustine ("don't play with that, you'll go blind" when she sees Jake playing with his queue).

Violence & Gore

  • The battle at the end is fairly violent and many creatures/humans die; some deaths are presented in shocking detail.
  • There's a large battle between humans and humanoid aliens: Several helicopter gunships and two larger flying vehicles attack the aliens with bullets and missiles, the aliens attack with arrows while perched on flying dragon-like creatures, and we see several helicopters blow up and many aliens are struck and crash to the ground.
  • An unfortunate humans' head and shoulders end up in a banshees mouth.
  • Explosions consume man, alien and beast alike.
  • On fire, a horse-like creature runs for its life.
  • Neytiri kills a human with two well-placed shots.
  • A soldier in huge mechanized armor fights with an alien riding a large tiger-like animal: The animal is eventually stabbed repeatedly by the soldier and falls dead on top of the alien, who tries hard to free herself.
  • A soldier in huge mechanized armor uses a spear to fight with an alien holding a dagger: after several blows, the alien throws the dagger, the soldier grabs the alien by the hair and is ready to kill him with the dagger but another alien shoots two arrows into the soldier's torso killing him.
  • Several soldiers on foot and a few soldiers in huge mechanized armor attack aliens who charge while riding alien horse-like animals; we see many aliens shot and killed (little blood is evident) and a few humans are killed by arrows. Soldiers on foot and in huge mechanized armor are attacked and crushed by rhino-like animals that charge them (the soldiers shoot back) and then are attacked by panther-like animals that have big teeth.
  • Gunship helicopters attack aliens with gas and explosives, and shoot at a gigantic tree with missiles: the aliens attack with arrows that have no effect and when the tree collapses aliens scramble to get away and many are presumably crushed and killed.
  • An alien jumps onto a flying gunship, shoots a couple of soldiers with arrows, strikes several others with a spear and is eventually shot dead and falls off. A flying dragon-like creature with an alien rider grabs a soldier out of a helicopter with its mouth and flings him out.
  • An alien is surrounded by alien panther-like animals at night, he tries to scare them off with a flaming torch, they attack, and he defends himself by hitting them with the torch and by stabbing and slicing at them with a knife; an alien shows up and shoots several with arrows, and she uses a knife to finish off an injured animal.
  • A soldier shoots at a departing helicopter, first with an automatic weapon and then with a pistol; we see several bullet holes on the helicopter's windshield and find out that one passenger has been shot -- she lifts her hand to show blood on her abdomen.
  • An alien has a wooden spike sticking out of his chest and he dies (no blood is seen).
  • An alien attacks another alien with a knife, slices him on the arm, and the second alien suddenly falls down unconscious; the first alien prepares to cut his throat when a female alien jumps on him, throws him down and snarls at him (we see his nose bleeding).
  • Two aliens fly perched on dragon-like creatures, when they are attacked by a much larger dragon-like creature, with big teeth; they fly through jungle and manage to hide behind trees.
  • Two sleeping aliens are almost crushed by a huge tank-like machine that knocks trees down along its path: one alien wakes up and tries to drag the other one away, who remains unconscious while trees are crashing all around them -- eventually he wakes up, climbs on the machine, breaks its cameras, and jumps to safety when he's fired upon.
  • A man is suffocating while trying to reach an oxygen mask; he passes out but an alien puts the mask on his face and he starts breathing again.
  • Two aliens are tied up, another alien approaches with a knife, and she cuts their bonds. An alien is tripped by a rope that's wrapped around his ankles and he's surrounded by several aliens with arrows aimed at him.
  • A large rhino-like animal confronts an alien, who wonders about shooting it with an automatic weapon but is told that the animal's hide is too tough: the animal leaves when a larger, tiger-like animal with sharp teeth and claws shows up and starts chasing the alien, who shoots at it but the animal grabs his gun away, then grabs him and flings him in the air, and he runs and falls off a cliff and into water.
  • We see a dead man in a coffin and during a cremation, we see a box containing the body of a dead man, placed in an incinerator, the flames erupt and the box is engulfed.
  • Contains moderate intense violence.
  • Aerial clashes involve banshees vs. the humans aircraft. And while the Navi get mowed down by missiles and gunfire, many of their arrows somehow penetrate cockpits, taking out pilots and gunners, by shots to the face and chest, shown onscreen.
  • Neytiri takes out a viperwolf with an arrow.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A woman has a drink that's presumably alcoholic.
  • Beer and tequila are mentioned a couple of times.
  • A woman smokes several times, and at one point asks for a cigarette with urgency.
  • Jake pulls a cigarette out of Grace's mouth and tells her not to smoke.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • 2 minutes in, Jake watches a body burn in a cardboard box.
  • The final battle in the film between the humans and Na'vi is intense and emotional, considering that we see scores of soldiers (on both sides) get stabbed, shot, impaled and crushed by gunfire, arrow piercings and falling objects.
  • Jake has several close encounters with native creatures, which may be intense and in several scenes, they chase him in an attempt to kill and eat him.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • For a special Na'vi ritual, both Jake and Dr. Augustine are stripped naked (in human form) and wrapped in vines. Their backsides are seen partially, but explicit nudity is hidden.

Violence & Gore

  • Neytiri rides a huge jungle beast while Quatrich controls a mech (a walking, armored vehicle). He repeatedly stabs the animal and kills it, pinning Neytiri beneath it in the process.
  • Jake's avatar nearly knocks the head off one human and hurls others to their deaths.
  • The humans brutal attack begins with gas canisters. And its not long before copters unleash missiles that bring the Navis massive "home tree" down in a scene reminiscent of the World Trade Center's collapse. Many Navi are crushed, impaled or wounded, and we see survivors departing in a line, weeping and wailing. This scene is very emotional and disturbing.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Neytiri looks for her father to see if he survived the tree attack, only to see him heavily wounded and he dies from his injuries as he gives his last words to his daughter. Neytiri is seen crying heavily, and Jake Sully's attempt to console her only makes it even worse, sending her into weeping and wailing uncontrollably out of sorrow. Add to Neytiri's status as a very likable character, and this is an incredibly shocking, emotional, depressing, upsetting and heart-wrenching scene.
  • The death of Grace is quite intense.
  • The Na'vi's sacred hometree is destroyed by human weaponry, and the whole scene is incredibly haunting, emotional and disturbing.
