Quotes
-
Edgar Stiles : [Over the phone] have you seen the news?
Lucy Stiles : Yes I'm watching it now
Edgar Stiles : Then why aren't you evacuated by now? What are you still doing home?
Lucy Stiles : You know I don't have a car
Edgar Stiles : Where's Margret?
Lucy Stiles : I tried to get a hold of her but the lines are all busy, I'm surprised you got through
Edgar Stiles : What about one of your neighbors? Can't you get a ride from one of them?
Lucy Stiles : No, by the time I got outside they were gone
Edgar Stiles : Listen to me, I'm going to make some calls. I'm going to try to get someone there to help you ok? I want you to sit by the phone and wait for my call, can you do that?
Lucy Stiles : Yes, I really don't have a choice
Edgar Stiles : I'll call you back
Lucy Stiles : Ok honey, bye
-
Audrey Raines : [Talking privately] I'm sorry, what is it?
Edgar Stiles : It's my mother
Audrey Raines : Your mother?
Edgar Stiles : She lives near San Gabriel Island: she's in a wheelchair, she doesn't drive and she missed the call to evacuate, now I don't know what to do
Audrey Raines : Maybe someone from the National Guard can get her?
Edgar Stiles : I already spoke to the area commander, he said he couldn't spare anyone
Audrey Raines : I'm sorry, I'm not sure what I can do
Edgar Stiles : [Hands her a piece of paper] here's his number. I thought maybe you called him yourself, I hate asking for special treatment: that's not something I normally do but she's my mother
Audrey Raines : I can't make any promises
Edgar Stiles : Just promise me you'll try ok?
Audrey Raines : Alright
-
Lucy Stiles : [Over the phone] hello honey
Edgar Stiles : I've been trying, I can't get anyone out there to help you. I've done everything I could, I did
Lucy Stiles : I'm sure you did, it's ok
Edgar Stiles : It's not ok. The fallout is coming towards you: its fifteen miles away
Lucy Stiles : I know, I'm watching it on the news and I know what to do
Edgar Stiles : There's nothing you can do, you can't stuff towels under the door
Lucy Stiles : That's not what I'm talking about doing
Edgar Stiles : What'd you mean?
Lucy Stiles : They've been talking about radiation poisoning on the news. That's not something I want to go through especially if there's only one way it can end. Honey, I want to end things on my terms, as opposed to all that pain and suffering
Edgar Stiles : Mom...
Lucy Stiles : It's the right thing to do, it's the only thing, and you know that
Edgar Stiles : No, I don't
Lucy Stiles : You have been a wonderful son, you've been a gift to me and your father, it's ok, I'm going to a better place, I'll see you there but not for a long time. You've got a lot ahead of you: great things
Edgar Stiles : I'm going to get someone to you, I'll keep trying
Lucy Stiles : You've got a very important job to do there, a lot of people are counting on you so I'm going to hang up now and I want you to know how very much I love you
-
Edgar Stiles : Did you talk to them?
Audrey Raines : Yes, I'm sorry, they can't get your mother
Edgar Stiles : Why not? Their five miles off the highway, it wouldn't take much time
Audrey Raines : They know where she is
Edgar Stiles : Then what's the problem?
Audrey Raines : Thousands of people are stuck in the interstate and traffic, it's taken the combined effort of the police and the National Guard to get them moving
Edgar Stiles : So who cares about one old woman?
Audrey Raines : They've got to throw their resources into saving the maximum number of lives
Edgar Stiles : [Before walking away] if my mother were rich or a politician, they'd find a way to save her
