The two featured guest stars had been regulars on other Warner Bros. series: Dorothy Provine had recently wrapped The Roaring 20's (1960), while Andrew Duggan dusted off his Cal Calhoun character from Bourbon Street Beat (1959), though he had closed his private eye firm and rejoined the police force. He and Bailey mention that Cal's former partner (Rex Randolph, played by Richard Long) had spent a year working with Bailey and Spencer (in the third season).
This episode was a follow-up to the similarly-titled Downbeat (1959), with Dorothy Provine and John van Dreelen reprising their roles. Coincidentally, these episodes mark the first and last of van Dreelen's seven guest appearances on the series.
For unknown reasons, Roger Smith's brief scene as Jeff Spencer is uncredited.
Writer/director Montgomery Pittman died 11 days after this episode aired. This was his final work as a writer/director; he would be credited with writing one further episode of 77 Sunset Strip.
