the sweetest woman in the world
pensman3 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
O'Hara gets a letter, his mother is coming to visit; the sweetest woman who ever lived. But where will she stay? O'Hara orders Boone and several others to decorate a room for his mother. He is happy with the result as his mom is so delicate.

A covered wagon enters the fort, the driver is a tough looking older woman; it's Mrs. O'Hara. She's not quite as O'Hara described. She starts in criticizing Masters for not feeding her son properly, he's too thin. Mrs. O'Hara is on her way West, to California. Masters and a patrol are sent out to find the Utes that chased Mrs. O'Hara into the fort. Rinnie finds the Indians but prevents Masters from leading the troop into a trap. Rinnie is also dispatched to return for reinforcements.

Masters splits the troop into two. O'Hara leads the first in an attack. That was to draw out the Indians who were in hiding. Masters would come in at a second front but is outnumbered. O'Hara is captured, but Masters knows he can't stage a rescue until he has more men.

Back at the fort, Mrs. O'Hara gets the news. She is upset but Boone tells her the men are getting ready to move out. Private Carson comes back to the fort on a horse that he was tied to. Carson says the Utes want a wagon of guns for a ransom or else they will kill O'Hara. Mrs. O'Hara gets ready to leave, she says her son embarrassed the name of O'Hara by getting captured. Rusty and Rinty have stowed aboard. She has decided she was going to try and trade herself for her son.

Mrs. O'Hara is taken by the Utes. She is reunited with her son but tells him Rusty is in the wagon. Rinty has found Masters and is bringing him to the Ute camp. Rusty gets into the teepee and frees O'Hara and Mrs. O'Hara. Biff gets his mom and Rusty back to the wagon and they take off. They run into Masters and the troop who chase the Utes off.

Mrs. O'Hara is now able to continue on her journey to California and all by herself. As she leaves, Biff is saying how his mom is the sweetest, most delicate, sensitive woman he knows. Halfway through Boone and the other men join in and everyone ends up laughing.

Jane Dawell plays Mrs. O'Hara. She had a long-distinguished career in film and is probable best remembered as Ma Joad in The Grapes of Wrath.
