Rusty is out on patrol with Rip and sees a band of wild horses lead by a beautiful black stallion, The Chief. A pinto challenges the stallion for leadership of the herd. But Chief in trying to rescue a foal is pinned by a falling rock. Rin Tin Ttin, on Rusty's command, holds off the challenger to save the pinned horse. When Rip and the men arrive, they free the horse but is has wounds that need treating. The stallion menaces the men, but follows Rin Tin Tin to the fort. The vet refuses to enter the pen to treat the horse until Rin Tin Tin and Rusty calm him. Meanwhile the new leader of the horses, called Savage by the ranchers, is leading the herd of horses against the settlers. Rip and the men have been dispatched to capture or kill the pinto. Rusty wants to find White Star, Chief's "lady-friend" horse, and bring her to the fort for Chief, then maybe Chief will settle down and be Rusty's horse.

Now Sgt. O'Hara is now looking for Rusty, who has wandered off too far looking for the horse. Back at the fort, Chief breaks free and goes looking for his herd. Rusty is still trying to rope White Star hoping in doing so that Chief will settle down. That's not going so well and Savage is about to bring the herd to trample Rusty when Chief appears to reclaim what's his. O'Hara pulls Rusty to safety, Chief reestablishes himself as long-time leader of the herd. Rusty realizes although the horse is grateful to him and Rinty, Chief's place is in the wild leading his head.
